GAROWE (Kaab TV) – A longstanding tribal conflict between the Kaskii Qabe and Reer Cumar clans of Majeertaan has officially ended near Garowe after 17 years, following a deadly car accident in Mogadishu.

The feud began after a man’s death in a car crash in Mogadishu, which sparked decades of violence affecting many families and nomadic communities unaffiliated with the conflict.

Despite several attempts at mediation, reconciliation between the two clans had repeatedly failed—until Wednesday, when religious leaders and elders facilitated a peace agreement on the outskirts of Garowe.

Businessman Jama Dhaga Dheere confirmed that the Kaskii Qabe clan agreed to pay a diya (compensation) of 55 camels to the family of the deceased.

This settlement, a reduction from the original demand, had been reached about 10 months ago.

Officials from the Puntland regional administration and security forces witnessed the ceremony where both clans declared the conflict resolved.

Tribal disputes in Somalia frequently arise from killings or property disputes and can last many years, often escalating into deadly violence.

With Somalia’s ongoing instability and weak formal justice system, many conflicts are resolved through traditional mechanisms involving religious and clan elders, as seen in this case.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Every day, thousands of people visit Liido Beach in the Abdiaziz district of Mogadishu for leisure and relaxation.

Visitors come from both within and outside the city, with the majority being young people eager to spend time by the seaside, despite occasional security risks.

On August 2, 2024, a terrorist bombing at Liido Beach killed at least 37 civilians and injured 247 others when an explosion tore through a popular beachside restaurant.

The attack was part of a series of assaults carried out by Al-Shabaab on hotels along the beach, where young people gather, particularly on weekends.

However, these attacks have not deterred the public from enjoying the beach.

Mohamed Codey, one of the youths relaxing at the shore, told Kaab TV that he enjoys the peaceful atmosphere of the beach and swimming in the ocean.

“I love coming to the beach all the time. The atmosphere is calm, and we just have fun,” he said.

Abdifatah Mahamud Aden, whom we met at the beach wearing sportswear featuring the blue Somali flag, said that spending time at the beach makes him appreciate the beauty and richness of Somalia’s coastline.

A Business Opportunity

“People come to the beach every day. We enjoy it. Women stay until 2:00 AM, and there are no security concerns. I tell people: appreciate your own beach! Many Somalis risk their lives migrating to Yemen, but this place is far more beautiful,” Abdifatah said.

Liido Beach is not just a place for relaxation—it also offers entertainment for young people, such as football matches played on the sand when the tide recedes.

Moreover, it has become an economic opportunity for many creative entrepreneurs, particularly those from low-income backgrounds.

Faadumo Ali Cilmi has built a small business at the beach, running a tea shop.

She also rents out life jackets to swimmers, although no dedicated lifeguards are available around the clock.

“I support my children through this business. I send them to school, and I have no complaints,” said Faadumo, who is sometimes assisted by her children when they return from school.

Similarly, Cali, a boat rental operator, said he continued working even after terrorist attacks occurred.

“Young people keep coming to us. It’s like a bus station. We rent boats for $2, $3, and so on. It’s a good market,” Cali said.

Liido Beach remains a cherished retreat for Mogadishu residents seeking a peaceful escape from daily hardships, despite occasionally being targeted by terrorist attacks.

The resilience of the people of Mogadishu clearly shows their refusal to allow extremist groups to deprive them of their right to a normal life, leisure, and joy.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Somali youth have launched an online campaign to raise awareness against clan conflicts amid ongoing deadly clashes between rival factions across the southern, central, and northern regions of the country.

In the Mudug region of central Somalia, clashes involving clan militias have resulted in civilian casualties and the displacement of hundreds of locals.

Similarly, in Hiiraan, gunmen ambushed and killed six Somali soldiers traveling through El Baraf town last month due to clan conflicts.

Meanwhile, in Galgadud, central Somalia, and Sanaag regions, clan militias continue to engage in deadly exchanges, escalating tensions with heavy weapons pouring into these areas.

Dr. Abdirahim Awiye, a university student currently based in Kampala, Uganda, along with his colleagues, initiated an online campaign named ‘Stop the Clan Fighting’.

The campaign, primarily active on Facebook and TikTok—popular platforms among Somali youth—aims to address the alarming levels of bloodshed in their country.

Speaking to Kaab TV, Dr. Awiye emphasized, “Those killed and displaced are our brothers and sisters, which is why we started this campaign.”

Reflecting on historical parallels, he drew inspiration from the Somali Youth League (SYL), a group that played a crucial role in Somalia’s independence struggle over six decades ago.

Dr. Awiye and his peers are determined to harness a similar spirit of unity to end the divisive clan-based conflicts that have plagued Somalia.

“I urge every Somali man and woman to use their social media platforms to promote peace and unity among their followers and influence their friends,” he urged.

Ahmed Muse, another local actively engaged in spreading awareness, blends traditional music with messages of brotherhood and coexistence in his videos.

He expressed frustration that many young men and women involved in clan conflicts use social media to perpetuate violence, emphasizing that such actions only lead to destruction rather than victory for any clan.

While these efforts aim to steer social media towards positive change, there remains widespread misuse by armed groups across Somalia.

Militias often exploit these platforms to share violent content, including graphic images and videos, depicting their perceived victories in conflicts.

Recently, Somalis condemned the circulation of disturbing videos and photos from the Mudug region, highlighting the inhumane conditions faced by captives and casualties.

Through initiatives like ‘Stop the Clan Fighting’, Somali youth are striving to counter these negative trends, advocating for peace, unity, and a cessation of violence that continues to destabilize their communities.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Jubbaland opposition politician Abdiweli Qasim Gabow has revealed that he was abducted in Mogadishu a few days ago while walking near the Sayidka-Dabka junction, a heavily secured area within the vicinity of Villa Somalia, the presidential palace.

In a Facebook post, Gabow recounted being forcibly taken by armed men in a military vehicle, who are suspected to be intelligence officers.

“A few days ago, in Mogadishu, while I was leaving my residence near the perimeter of the presidential palace, a group of men in a military vehicle forcibly took me from the area between the Sayidka monument and the presidential palace—a highly secured zone with a heavy military presence. The men informed me that they were ordered to detain me, but they did not provide any details about the reason or who issued the order,” Gabow wrote.

“They confiscated my phone, which I had been using to send distress signals, and attempted to blindfold me. After considerable commotion and internal disagreements among themselves, they eventually returned me to the exact spot where I had been taken without taking me to any detention center,” he stated.

to his luck, Gabow says he managed to send distress signals using his phone before it was confiscated.

The men allegedly attempted to blindfold him but later returned him to the exact location from which he was taken without transferring him to any detention center.

“Finally, I regained my freedom without any further explanation. I was not subjected to physical harm or any other mistreatment,” he wrote.

According to Gabow, subsequent investigations by government officials revealed that both his abduction and release were ordered by a senior officer within the Somali intelligence services.

However, no further details about the incident have been disclosed by the Somali government.

Gabow expressed gratitude to those who worked to resolve the situation without naming them.

Abdiweli Qasim Gabow is part of a Jubbaland opposition group based in Mogadishu.

Reports suggest that tensions have escalated between the Somali federal government and Jubbaland opposition figures, following alleged attempts by the federal government to co-opt opposition leaders into its political agenda.

Gabow and his colleagues reportedly rejected such moves, placing them at odds with federal authorities once again.

GAROWE (Kaab TV) – Under the shade of a tree, a traditional Somali venue for peace negotiations, the conflict in Xarfo town, a rural town in Mudug region, has reached an initial resolution on Tuesday.

The agreement, witnessed by Puntland’s Interior Minister Abdi Farah Said, marks a critical step toward restoring peace after days of violence between the Reer Mahad and Mohamed Omar clans of the Majerteen sub-clan.

Local authorities report that 14 people were affected by the conflict, with four killed and 10 others injured.

The fighting, which lasted two days, centered around disputes over rural land and access to water wells, culminating in the destruction of a vital well that served the local community.

The violence forced much of the local population to flee, leaving schools closed and many still afraid to return to their homes.

Discussions for a comprehensive and lasting peace are set to begin on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, at the residence of Sultan Mohamed Sultan Mohamoud in Xarfo.

In today’s preliminary agreement, Interior Minister Abdi Farah Said announced strict measures to prevent further hostilities.

Ceasefire Commitment

Both parties have agreed to a complete ceasefire.

Clan militias must vacate Xarfo and move to designated areas agreed upon during the meeting. Weapons are prohibited within and around the town.

The clans will prepare for the upcoming peace conference to address the root causes of the conflict.

Any party breaking the ceasefire will be fined $20,000 and held accountable for any resulting damages.

Puntland’s government will assume responsibility for ensuring Xarfo’s security.

The clans involved, Reer Mahad and Mohamed Omar, will equally share the expenses for the peace conference and hospitality.

The clans involved, Reer Mahad and Mohamed Omar, will equally share the expenses for the peace conference and hospitality.

Local leaders endorsed the agreement, expressing hope for long-term stability. Xarfo District Commissioner Abdirahman Hirsi emphasized the importance of peace.

“Xarfo district is at the heart of Puntland. It doesn’t need bullets—it needs peace and development,” Commissioner Hirsi said.

On his side, Mudug Regional Governor Faisal Sheikh Ali (Jifo Jabsade) addressed the need for accountability.

“When an oppressive criminal is killed, instead of condemning his actions, some cry out claiming, ‘We’ve lost a son.’ That mindset is not right. We need clan leaders to prevent future violence and work with the government to bring criminals to justice,” stated Governor Faisal.

Women’s Role in Peacebuilding

Women played a significant role in advocating for peace. Mamo Hawo, a respected local peace advocate, delivered a compelling speech urging accountability and unity.

Hawo challenged elders to take responsibility for their sons’ actions and reminded the community that without peace, everything, including their livelihoods, would be lost. She further warned about the consequences in the hereafter, saying, “Killing and looting will never be forgotten.”

Hawo also called for the government and the local community to work together, emphasizing the need for a deep assessment of the underlying causes of the recurrent conflict.

Her address followed the announcement of a peace agreement that ended a recent clan conflict, which claimed three lives and led to the destruction of a water well by warring clan militias.

Hawo challenged the men and elders, who are parents of the warring boys, to take responsibility and stop their sons from engaging in conflict. She reminded the residents of Xarfo that if peace is destroyed, life will never be the same, and everything, including the milk they depend on, will be spoiled.

She also warned of the consequences in the hereafter, emphasizing that “killing and looting will never be forgotten.”

While calling on the government to fulfill its role in maintaining peace, Hawo stressed the equal responsibility of the local community in ending the conflict. She urged a deep and thorough assessment of the root causes of the recurrent disputes in the region to prevent future violence.

Hawo’s speech underscores the vital role Somali women play in peacebuilding and reconciliation. Though women are not participants in the violence, they remain its primary victims, often working tirelessly to rebuild and restore peace in their communities.

MANDERA, Kenya (Kaab TV) – Three weeks after Jubbaland state forces decisively defeated Somali federal government troops in Raas Kaambooni, the situation remains volatile, with both sides preparing for further conflict.

The initial clashes, which saw over a thousand Somalia federal soldiers surrender to Kenyan forces, dozens killed or injured, and some still missing, have now expanded to other parts of Gedo and Lower Jubba regions.

The conflict threatens to destabilize these areas further, which are already significantly influenced by Al-Shabaab insurgents. Given the proximity of these regions to Kenya and Ethiopia, the ongoing hostilities pose a heightened risk of regional spillover.

The current tensions began when the Somali federal government, based in Mogadishu, deployed nearly 2,000 Turkish-trained troops alongside presidential guard units and intelligence forces to the coastal town of Raas Kaambooni, just 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the Kenyan border.

Jubbaland forces in Raaskaambooni after defeating the Somalia federal forces and captured hundreds of them.

The controversial deployment aimed to advance towards Kismayo, the interim capital of Jubbaland, with the objective of apprehending Jubbaland’s leader, Ahmed Mohamed Islam, popularly known as “Madobe.” of the Ogaden/Daarood clan.

This move followed an arrest warrant issued by a Mogadishu-based judge from President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s Abgaal/Hawiye clan. In response, a Kismayo judge issued a reciprocal arrest warrant for President Mohamud, escalating tensions further.

Decisive Clashes in Raas Kaambooni

The situation culminated in a major confrontation on December 11, when Jubbaland’s elite units, known as Abris and Birjeh, launched a surprise attack from the beachside on federal forces positions in Raas Kaambooni.

The four-hour battle ended in a humiliating defeat for the federal troops. Over 600 soldiers were captured alive, while others fled to Kenya, where they were seen surrendering barefoot and disarmed to the Kenyan Defense Forces.

Jubbaland’s Minister of Information, Abdifatah Mohamed Mukhtar, confirmed the release of captured soldiers, stating, “Jubbaland facilitated their departure smoothly, providing care and respect, despite the soldiers initially acting on misguided orders from their commanders.”

Kenyan sources reported that over 1,100 Somali troops surrendered, and Mogadishu requested their return via air transport.

The Somali federal government has remained tight-lipped about the debacle, while Jubbaland capitalized on the victory to bolster its position.

Conflict Spreads to Gedo and Lower Jubba

The conflict has since expanded beyond Raas Kaambooni.

In Gedo, Somali federal authorities dispatched a delegation led by Internal Security Minister General Abdullahi Ismail Fartaag, who hails from the Marehan clan.

Arriving in Garbaharey, Gedo’s provincial capital, Fartaag held meetings with clan elders and mobilized local forces.

Meanwhile, Jubbaland replaced Gedo’s governor, Abdullahi Abdi Jama, with Sheikh Mohamed Al-Qaadi, a former Ahlu Sunna militia commander.

Both sides have continued deploying troops and weapons. Jubbaland forces reportedly received support from Ethiopian troops stationed in the region, while Mogadishu reinforced its positions.

On December 23, clashes erupted in Dolow, a strategic border town hosting numerous humanitarian organizations and thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs).

The fighting, which began when federal forces attempted to arrest Jubbaland officials, left at least four people dead.

Jubbaland forces regained control of the town by midday. The violence forced businesses to shut down and residents to flee, with some crossing into Ethiopia for safety.

Jubbaland’s Minister of Security, General Yusuf Hussein Dhumal, vowed to retake Kulbiyow.

Adding to the turmoil, Jubbaland officials accused Somali federal forces of kidnapping a local humanitarian worker in Dolow.

The federal government has not commented on the allegation.

In Lower Jubba, fighting erupted in Kulbiyow, near the Kenyan border, as federal forces, backed by a former Jubbaland district commissioner Muhumed Fanah from the Ogaden/Daarood who defected, clashed with Jubbaland troops.

The skirmish resulted in five deaths and temporarily forced Jubbaland forces to withdraw from the town.

Jubbaland’s Minister of Security, General Yusuf Hussein Dhumal, vowed to retake Kulbiyow, urging the public to “wait and see what happens.”

Al-Shabaab Exploits the Chaos

Amid the conflict, Al-Shabaab has sought to capitalize on the instability.

On December 23, a landmine detonated on a road between Beledhawo and Dolow, targeting a Somali government military vehicle.

The explosion killed several officers and destroyed the vehicle, highlighting the group’s continued threat in the region.

The ongoing hostilities between Jubbaland and federal forces have severe implications for civilians and regional stability.

In Dolow, humanitarian operations are under strain, and further clashes risk triggering a refugee crisis as residents flee to neighboring Kenya and Ethiopia and the prospect of a resolution remains uncertain, with both sides entrenched in their positions.
