Somalia’s Leaders Face Expired Terms as Mogadishu Residents Reject Somali Shilling

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – Businesses in Mogadishu have stopped accepting the Somali shilling, as the 1,000-shilling note — the only remaining widely circulated denomination of the national currency — has now been rejected in markets across the capital.

Public transport operators, markets, and small shops in the city, which were among the few places where the Somali shilling was still commonly used, have refused to accept payments from customers attempting to purchase goods and services with the currency.

The people most negatively affected by the situation are low-income individuals who rely heavily on public transportation for their daily travel.

The Federal Government of Somalia, whose term has expired, and the Banadir Regional Administration are expected to respond to the issue, as it has created serious difficulties for many citizens who still possess Somali shilling currency.

The currency had already fallen out of use in several regions of the country, where people increasingly rely on mobile money transactions. Now, Mogadishu — one of the last areas where the Somali shilling remained in circulation — has also effectively abandoned its use.

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – The markets in Mogadishu remain in a state of instability, where the official national currency, the Somali Shilling, is not being fully used.

Traders and currency exchangers are now heavily reliant on foreign currencies, particularly the US dollar. They say confidence in the Somali Shilling has declined significantly, which has affected its use in local markets.

Currency exchangers held a protest in Mogadishu, expressing concern over the ongoing situation. They accused the government of failing to address the problem and of not taking visible steps to strengthen the use of the national currency.

They called on the government to intervene urgently and establish a clear policy to restore confidence in the Somali Shilling, in order to stabilize business activity and market operations in the city.
