GALKAYO, Somalia (Kaab TV) – A new wave of clan-related revenge killings has shaken Galkayo, the divided central Somali city in the Mudug region, prompting local officials, youth groups, and community members to raise alarms over the rising insecurity.

On June 7, gunmen abducted and killed Sa’id Guure Ali Baar, a taxi driver, and his passenger Anab Burhan Mohamed in a brazen daylight attack.

Both were shot at point-blank range, and the perpetrators fled the scene.

Local authorities believe the double murder is part of a retaliatory cycle stemming from earlier inter-clan violence, indicating a resurgence of revenge killings that had long plagued the region.

Anab, a young woman and victim of the attack, was the daughter of Burhan Mohamed Abdi, a well-known journalist and former director of Radio Galkayo.

Her burial took place the following day, with an outpouring of condolences from the public to the grieving family.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="wp-image-13221 size-full" title="Galkayo has historically been a hotspot for clan conflict, but the city has enjoyed over a decade of relative stability following reconciliation efforts.
In response to the killings, the Galkayo Youth Movement — a civic group recently active in addressing social issues — released a statement on June 10 urging government officials, elders, and the wider public to confront the growing threat of clan-based violence.

“Clan-based divisions are an issue that needs to be addressed collectively, honestly, and with the investment of time, resources, and intellect,” the group said, expressing concern over the increasing recurrence of such attacks.

The youth called on the Puntland authorities, who administer northern Galkayo, to enhance police operations and increase security patrols in vulnerable areas.

Galkayo has historically been a hotspot for clan conflict, but the city has enjoyed over a decade of relative stability following reconciliation efforts. The city is divided between two federal member states: Galmudug governs the southern part, while Puntland controls the north.

Recent skirmishes between members of the Leelkase and Habargidir clans in western Galkayo have sparked fears of renewed instability across the city.

Puntland’s Mudug regional governor, Faisal Sheikh Ali, confirmed that the authorities are actively addressing the escalating situation. Last week, he hosted a meeting focused on curbing clan revenge killings.

The meeting — organized by local youth — brought together religious leaders, businesspeople, and members of the local council to discuss coordinated efforts to restore calm and prevent further bloodshed.

On 3 June, Jubbaland TV reported that representatives from the Somali Ministry of Information in Mogadishu had “looted” their equipment, including “cameras, computers, and office supplies”, which were essential for the operation of their studio in Mogadishu.

A journalist working for the station told SJS that during the raid, the Jubbaland TV office was unlawfully taken over. Jubbaland TV, which is owned by the Jubaland state, had operated an office and studio within the premises of the Federal Ministry of Information in Mogadishu.

Since October 2024, a deepening constitutional and territorial conflict between Jubbaland and Somalia’s federal government has escalated—from political opposition to electoral disputes, legal warfare, and eventually armed conflict that broke out in December. The dispute has also resulted in the suspension of flights to several towns in Jubbaland.

On Friday, 6 June, Puntland State Police in Galkayo arrested Mohamed Abdul Aziz, Director of Radio Galkayo, and Ahmed Abdiqani Yusuf, a freelance cameraman. The pair were at Awale Football Stadium, where local authorities and members of the public had gathered for Eid-ul-Adha prayers.

Mohamed Abdul Aziz told SJS that he had gone to perform the prayers but was also aware that a group of local youth—previously featured in Radio Galkayo reports—were planning a protest against the city authorities. According to media sources, three of the youth involved in the planned protest were also arrested by police.

Mohamed Abdul Aziz told SJS that he received a phone call from Mudug Police Commissioner Mohamud Abdihakim shortly before his arrest. The commissioner warned him that Radio Galkayo should stop discussing the youth protests. In recent weeks, Radio Galkayo has been at the forefront of covering and discussing the youth-led protests.

Later that day, during a press conference, the Governor of Mudug Region in Puntland, Faysal Sheikh Ali, accused the youth of planning to stage a protest “organized without official permission.” He claimed they had a microphone mounted on a vehicle and had printed “slogans criticizing the city authorities.”

Radio Galkayo—a community-owned station and one of the longest-serving radio outlets in Puntland—condemned the arrests of the youth and journalists as “illegal.” Since mid May 2025, youth in Galkayo have been organizing both online and offline protests demanding improved sanitation, a functional drainage system (as rains have blocked roads), the construction of Galkayo Airport, and the depoliticization of the Galkayo-Xarfo road, which remains suspended due to a dispute between Puntland state and the Somali federal authorities.

The two journalists were released on Saturday after spending a night at the Galkayo North Police Station, Mohamed Abdul Aziz confirmed to SJS.

“The Somali Journalists Syndicate strongly condemns the arbitrary arrest of Radio Galkayo director Mohamed Abdul Aziz and freelance cameraman Ahmed Abdiqani Yusuf in Galkayo, as well as the unlawful raid and looting of Jubbaland TV’s studio in Mogadishu by officials from the Ministry of Information,” said Abdalle Mumin, Secretary-General of SJS.

“These actions are not only illegal and abusive but are a clear attempt to intimidate independent media and silence critical reporting. We call on both Puntland authorities and the federal government to immediately end the harassment of journalists, return the confiscated equipment, and respect press freedom as guaranteed by Somalia’s Provisional Constitution and international obligations,” Mr. Mumin added.

GALKAYO (Kaab TV) – Two local businessmen who were shot and killed on Sunday in the town of Bur Saalax, located in the Mudug region, central Somalia, were laid to rest on Monday.

Burhaan Hashi, the manager of Golis Telecommunications in Bur Saalax branch, and Mahad Bashiir Mohamed (known as Sayuun) were both shot dead at the same location in the town.

Eyewitnesses and local reports indicate that armed assailants carried out the killings.

The incident is believed to be linked to ongoing clan-related tensions in the region.

Mudug has been plagued in recent years by recurring inter-clan violence, which has resulted in killings and the displacement of innocent civilians.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Somali youth have launched an online campaign to raise awareness against clan conflicts amid ongoing deadly clashes between rival factions across the southern, central, and northern regions of the country.

In the Mudug region of central Somalia, clashes involving clan militias have resulted in civilian casualties and the displacement of hundreds of locals.

Similarly, in Hiiraan, gunmen ambushed and killed six Somali soldiers traveling through El Baraf town last month due to clan conflicts.

Meanwhile, in Galgadud, central Somalia, and Sanaag regions, clan militias continue to engage in deadly exchanges, escalating tensions with heavy weapons pouring into these areas.

Dr. Abdirahim Awiye, a university student currently based in Kampala, Uganda, along with his colleagues, initiated an online campaign named ‘Stop the Clan Fighting’.

The campaign, primarily active on Facebook and TikTok—popular platforms among Somali youth—aims to address the alarming levels of bloodshed in their country.

Speaking to Kaab TV, Dr. Awiye emphasized, “Those killed and displaced are our brothers and sisters, which is why we started this campaign.”

Reflecting on historical parallels, he drew inspiration from the Somali Youth League (SYL), a group that played a crucial role in Somalia’s independence struggle over six decades ago.

Dr. Awiye and his peers are determined to harness a similar spirit of unity to end the divisive clan-based conflicts that have plagued Somalia.

“I urge every Somali man and woman to use their social media platforms to promote peace and unity among their followers and influence their friends,” he urged.

Ahmed Muse, another local actively engaged in spreading awareness, blends traditional music with messages of brotherhood and coexistence in his videos.

He expressed frustration that many young men and women involved in clan conflicts use social media to perpetuate violence, emphasizing that such actions only lead to destruction rather than victory for any clan.

While these efforts aim to steer social media towards positive change, there remains widespread misuse by armed groups across Somalia.

Militias often exploit these platforms to share violent content, including graphic images and videos, depicting their perceived victories in conflicts.

Recently, Somalis condemned the circulation of disturbing videos and photos from the Mudug region, highlighting the inhumane conditions faced by captives and casualties.

Through initiatives like ‘Stop the Clan Fighting’, Somali youth are striving to counter these negative trends, advocating for peace, unity, and a cessation of violence that continues to destabilize their communities.

XARFO, Mudug (Kaab TV) – “We are a Muslim and noble people. The burden we carry is like a milk cow on our shoulders—if we let it spill, we will be the ones to regret it,” said Hawo, a local peace advocate, during a powerful speech in Xarfo town, Mudug region.

Her address followed the announcement of a peace agreement that ended a recent clan conflict, which claimed three lives and led to the destruction of a water well by warring clan militias.

Hawo challenged the men and elders, who are parents of the warring boys, to take responsibility and stop their sons from engaging in conflict. She reminded the residents of Xarfo that if peace is destroyed, life will never be the same, and everything, including the milk they depend on, will be spoiled.

She also warned of the consequences in the hereafter, emphasizing that “killing and looting will never be forgotten.”

While calling on the government to fulfill its role in maintaining peace, Hawo stressed the equal responsibility of the local community in ending the conflict. She urged a deep and thorough assessment of the root causes of the recurrent disputes in the region to prevent future violence.

Hawo’s speech underscores the vital role Somali women play in peacebuilding and reconciliation. Though women are not participants in the violence, they remain its primary victims, often working tirelessly to rebuild and restore peace in their communities.
