The former Hotel Jubba site is among the locations attracting attention. The hotel, located around Mogadishu’s Shangaani district, was historically associated with several major political and security events during the country’s years of conflict.

Historical accounts describe Hotel Jubba as an important location during the fighting in Mogadishu and a place that was at various times used by government officials and security forces.

Government sources have also previously referred to the area as the “Ex-Hotel Jubba” in connection with road construction and redevelopment projects in and around the site.

Recent reports indicate that bulldozers have been brought to the area and that structures are being demolished.

If the operation is part of an official redevelopment or infrastructure project, the relevant authorities should clearly explain the plan to residents, including what is intended to be built on the site.

Some residents said homes and other structures were demolished without giving occupants sufficient time to vacate the properties.

The issue becomes particularly sensitive when low-income families are affected, as a home represents not only a physical structure but also a place where families live, work and build their livelihoods.

The presence of armed security forces at demolition sites has generated additional concern.

From the government’s perspective, the forces may have been deployed to provide security and protect the sites. However, residents could perceive their presence as intimidating if authorities do not clearly explain why the troops are there.

Authorities should therefore ensure that security forces operate within the law while protecting civilians and their property during any demolition or redevelopment operation.

Videos and claims have also emerged from parts of Kaaraan district, particularly around the Buulo Axmed Cabdulle area.

Some reports allege that residents have dug trenches and defensive pits intended to obstruct or stop vehicles. The claims have not all been independently verified.

Any security concerns in residential areas should be handled in a way that prevents civilians from becoming the primary victims of the response.

The demolition of homes has also become part of the wider political debate, with several politicians accusing the government of taking land from vulnerable residents.

Comments previously made by former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed regarding land ownership and public grievances have also become part of the broader discussion surrounding the issue.

Mogadishu’s development and infrastructure expansion remain important, but sustainable development requires clear laws, transparency and protection of residents.

New projects should not come at the cost of leaving families without homes or adequate protection of their rights.
