Minnesota (KAAB TV) – President Donald Trump said Friday night that he’s “immediately” terminating temporary legal protections for Somali migrants living in Minnesota, further targeting a program seeking to limit deportations that his administration has already repeatedly sought to weaken.

Minnesota has the nation’s largest Somali community. Many fled the long civil war in their east African country and were drawn to the state’s welcoming social programs.

But how many migrants would be affected by Trump’s announcement that he wants to end temporary protective status could be very small. A report produced for Congress in August put the number of Somalis covered by the program at just 705 nationwide.

Congress created the program granting Temporary Protective Status in 1990. It was meant to prevent deportations of people to countries suffering from natural disasters, civil strife or other dangerous conditions.

The designation can be granted by the Homeland Security secretary and is granted in 18-month increments.

The president announced his decision on his social media site, suggesting that Minnesota was “a hub of fraudulent money laundering activity.”

“Somali gangs are terrorizing the people of that great State, and BILLIONS of Dollars are missing. Send them back to where they came from,” Trump wrote. “It’s OVER!”

The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said Trump’s decision “will tear families apart.” Executive Director Jaylani Hussein said in a statement late Friday, ”This is not just a bureaucratic change; it is a political attack on the Somali and Muslim community driven by Islamophobic and hateful rhetoric.”

Trump promised while campaigning to win back the White House last year that his administration would deport millions of people. As part of a broader push to adopt hardline immigration policies, the Trump administration has moved to withdraw various protections that had allowed immigrants to remain in the United States and work legally.

That included ending TPS for 600,000 Venezuelans and 500,000 Haitians who were granted protection under President Joe Biden. The Trump administration has also sought to limit protections previously extended to migrants from Cuba and Syria, among other countries.

MINNESOTA (KAAB TV) – Federal authorities have arrested a 23-year-old Somali man residing in Minnesota after uncovering evidence that he attempted to join the Islamic State (ISIS), praised deadly terrorist attacks, and expressed a willingness to carry out violence against the United States.

The suspect, identified as Abdisatar Ahmed Hassan, was taken into custody following a multi-agency investigation led by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force.

According to prosecutors, Hassan attempted on two occasions to travel to Somalia in an effort to join ISIS, and repeatedly used social media to express support for the terrorist organization and its violent ideology.

Deputy U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson, who is prosecuting the case, made a strong statement following the arrest:

“Abdisatar Hassan proudly filmed himself with the ISIS flag and celebrated terrorist attacks against his own country. We will not allow Minnesota to become a breeding ground or safe haven for extremists who seek to harm the United States.”

Social Media Activity Raised Red Flags

Authorities became aware of Hassan’s activities through disturbing content he posted online.

Investigators say that his social media accounts were used to glorify ISIS and other terrorist organizations, including Al-Shabaab, a Somalia-based jihadist group that has been designated a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. government.

One particularly concerning post referenced the January 1, 2025 terrorist attack in New Orleans, which resulted in the deaths of 14 innocent people. Hassan referred to the attacker as a “hero” and used celebratory language to describe the tragedy.

In February 2025, Hassan posted a video of himself holding a homemade black ISIS flag in his home — an act which further heightened concern among federal investigators.

Digital Evidence Revealed Explosive Materials and Instructions

When FBI agents executed a search warrant, they seized Hassan’s mobile devices. Forensic analysis of the phones uncovered a series of encrypted messages and alarming PDF documents written in both French and Arabic.

These files reportedly included detailed instructions for constructing and detonating explosives — raising serious concerns about Hassan’s intentions and operational capabilities.

The FBI also found message exchanges between Hassan and a person believed to be a journalist or media contact. Authorities have not disclosed whether that individual is under investigation.

Confession and Awaiting Sentencing

During a recent court appearance, Hassan admitted to the charges and confirmed that he had intended to travel overseas to join ISIS and support its mission.

His sentencing hearing is expected to take place in the coming weeks. He faces a lengthy prison sentence under federal anti-terrorism statutes.

FBI Reaffirms National Security Priorities

Alvin M. Winston Sr., Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Minneapolis Division, praised the work of the agents and analysts involved in the case:

“Today’s arrest and forthcoming sentencing are the results of countless hours of investigative work by the FBI and our partners. Keeping Minnesota — and the rest of the United States — safe from foreign terrorist organizations like ISIS and Al-Shabaab remains one of our highest priorities. These groups continue to pose a credible threat to national security.”

This case underscores the ongoing threat posed by online radicalization and domestic sympathizers of foreign terrorist organizations. The Department of Justice and FBI continue to urge the public to report suspicious behavior and online activity to law enforcement.

Omar Shariif Jeeg, a family spokesperson, told the media that Luul had been hospitalized and undergone surgery.

He revealed that after complications, she was readmitted to the hospital, where one of her legs was amputated.

She sadly passed away shortly thereafter.

Luul Jeylaani, aged 74, leaves behind a monumental legacy in Somali music and arts.

Beyond her impressive collection of songs—spanning Banaadiri classics and other genres—Luul played a central role in Somali theater.

She participated in numerous productions staged at Mogadishu’s iconic Murtida iyo Madadaalada theater during the 1970s and 1980s, an era of flourishing Somali art and culture.

Her traditional and romantic songs earned her widespread admiration.

Some of her most iconic works include:

Ebadkaa Ogow Ishaada Meesha U Roon “Always Know What Is Best for Your Eyes”

Riixaanta Jannaad “The Sweet Breeze of Paradise”

Beerkaad Iiga Taallaa “I Feel You In My Heart”

Dunidaan “This World”

“Isha Ku Hay” “Keep Your Eye on”

Arooskaaga “Your Wedding”

Waa kuu gagsahaayee “I am your Solace”

Luul’s music often reflected themes of love, culture, and community, brought to life by her enchanting voice and poetic finesse. She also collaborated with legendary Somali artists, such as Aweys Qamiis, Ahmed Naajid Saad, and Ahmed Falaash, solidifying her place as a cornerstone of Somali music history.

The Legacy of “Gallad”

One of her standout performances was the song “Gallad,” a heartfelt piece that delves into themes of love, gratitude, and shared joy. Its evocative lyrics, paired with Luul’s resonant voice, struck a chord with audiences, making it a timeless classic:

A man who plants sorghum in a pit,

Will reap it when the rains fall,

He will not miss it,

It is only right to be appreciated each other.

The favor you showed me, I’ve cherished,

It is not fair for me to cut ties with you?

So many hardships I’ve endured,

Crawling through difficulties to reach you,

Now I’ve come to you; grant me your hand, for I’ve surrendered myself to you.

The favor you showed me, I’ve cherished,

It is not fair for me to cut ties with you?

Diaspora Influence and Advocacy

After Somalia’s civil unrest, Luul Jeylaani joined the Somali diaspora, settling in the USA. Even abroad, she remained an influential figure in Somali arts and culture, frequently participating in events addressing Somalia’s challenges and delivering messages of hope and resilience.

Luul Jeylaani will be remembered as a trailblazer in Somali music and a guardian of its cultural heritage.

May Allah grant her mercy and eternal peace.
