MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Nearly a hundred young people, mostly from Somaliland, who were among the migrant youths returned from Libya, reported that they are struggling in Mogadishu.

The young people who filed a complaint in Mogadishu said that the United Nations Migration Agency (IOM) and the Somali Embassy in Libya had promised them financial assistance—$5,000 to be exact—upon their return. However, they reported that they are currently living in a small room provided by the IOM, with no sign of the promised money.

Yahye Abdullahi Jama, one of the youths from Somaliland, said that upon their arrival in Mogadishu, their identity cards were taken, leaving them with no one to turn to for help.

“When we were in Libya, we were told not to register in Hargeisa, but in Mogadishu. We were promised that we would be paid $5,000,” said Yaxye.

“We are still imprisoned in Libya; we are being detained at 10:00 p.m.,” he continued.

Yasin, another youth, told Kaab TV that the youths from Mogadishu have been separated, while those from Somaliland are now isolated in the city.

“And we are being discriminated against in a special way,” he said.

These young people, now in a desperate situation, regretted agreeing to return. They said they had been less than 14 km from the coast of Lampedusa, an island in the Mediterranean Sea.

They accused Somalia’s ambassador to Libya of deceiving them, making them believe there was hope in Somalia—a hope they now feel they have lost.

“The Somali ambassador belongs to the smugglers [smuggling gangs],” Yaxye said.

The Somali government and the IOM have been arranging flights for young people intercepted on the shores of Libya as they attempt to migrate to Europe.

The IOM has yet to comment on the financial promises that were made and later withdrawn.

Kaab TV has also received no response from the Somali immigration department or the Somali embassy in Libya.

Libya (KAAB TV) – At least 42 migrants are feared dead after a rubber boat sank off the coast of Libya, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The vessel reportedly departed the coastal town of Zuwara in northwestern Libya in the early hours of November 3, but its engine failed amid strong waves shortly after setting out.

According to the IOM, seven survivors were discovered following a six-day ordeal at sea. They were rescued on Saturday, when Libyan authorities launched an operation near the al-Buri offshore gas platform.

All survivors were immediately transported to Tripoli, where they received medical care, water, and food. Although weakened and suffering from exposure-related illnesses, they were reported to be in stable condition.

The ill-fated boat was carrying 49 people—47 men and 2 women—when it departed Zuwara.

Those still missing include 29 Sudanese, 8 Somalis, 3 Cameroonians, and 2 Nigerians, highlighting once again the desperate conditions that drive people from conflict-stricken or impoverished regions toward Europe through the central Mediterranean.

Libya continues to serve as a major transit hub for migrants from across Africa and the Middle East, many of whom rely on dangerous smuggling routes due to a lack of safe and legal migration pathways. Shipwrecks remain tragically common as overloaded and unseaworthy boats attempt the perilous crossing to Europe.

This latest incident follows another fatal shipwreck just one month earlier. In that case, a wooden boat that departed from al-Zawiya, also in northwestern Libya, capsized due to rough seas.

Eighteen people lost their lives, while 64 migrants—reportedly from Sudan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan—were rescued.

According to IOM’s Missing Migrants Project, the death toll in the central Mediterranean Sea continues to climb. Since the beginning of 2025, more than 1,000 people have died attempting the crossing.

Of these, over 500 disappeared specifically off the Libyan coast, underscoring the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the deadly risks faced by migrants seeking safety or opportunity in Europe.

This most recent tragedy adds to a growing list of catastrophic maritime disasters in the region and highlights the urgent need for safer migration routes, stronger search-and-rescue efforts, and improved protection for vulnerable people on the move.

WASHINGTON (Kaab TV) — U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday reinstated a signature policy from his first term, announcing a sweeping travel ban targeting citizens of 12 countries, including Somalia.

The ban, which takes effect at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, also imposes heightened restrictions on visitors from seven additional nations.

According to the Associated Press, the measure is structured to avoid the airport chaos that erupted in 2017 when a similar ban was introduced with almost no warning.

This time, Trump appears to be on stronger legal footing, following a 2018 Supreme Court decision that upheld his authority to implement such restrictions.

Full ban

The new list of banned countries includes Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. Visitors from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela will face enhanced screening and visa restrictions.

Trump defended the move by citing concerns over “deficient” vetting systems, a lack of cooperation from some governments in accepting deported citizens, and high visa overstay rates.

His administration relied heavily on a Department of Homeland Security report tracking visa overstays by tourists, students, and business travelers arriving by air or sea.

“We don’t want them,” Trump said bluntly.

Somalia Specifically Targeted

In his official proclamation, Trump claimed that Somalia lacks a competent or cooperative central authority for issuing passports or civil documentation.

Trump asserted that Somalia’s government does not effectively control its territory, which, according to him, limits its ability to ensure national security.

“Somalia stands apart from other countries in the degree to which its government lacks command and control of its territory,” the proclamation reads.

The administration further argued that Somalia continues to harbor a persistent terrorist threat, stating that terrorist groups use Somali territory as a base for planning and launching attacks.

“The United States Government has identified Somalia as a terrorist safe haven,” the statement continues. “Somalia also remains a destination for individuals attempting to join terrorist groups that threaten the national security of the United States.”

Trump’s order adds that the Somali government has historically refused to accept back its nationals who are ordered removed from the U.S.

As a result, the proclamation concludes:

“The entry into the United States of nationals of Somalia as immigrants and nonimmigrants is hereby fully suspended.”

In response, Somalia’s Ambassador to the United States, Dahir Hassan, told Reuters:

“Somalia values its enduring relationship with the U.S. and is ready to engage in meaningful dialogue to address concerns.”

The ambassador emphasized Somalia’s commitment to improving bilateral ties and addressing shared security challenges, signaling a diplomatic approach despite the newly imposed restrictions.

Rome (Kaab TV) – At least 55 people drowned after a boat sank off the coast of Libya, according to the U.N. migration agency.

It is the latest in a series of deadly accidents in just a few days involving migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe.

The boat left Garabouli, a town east of Tripoli, Libya’s capital, yesterday morning. Only five survivors were brought to shore by the Libyan coast guard.

Human rights organizations have for years protested the lack of preventive search and rescue patrols by countries around the Mediterranean.

After the dictator Muammar el-Qaddafi was toppled and killed in 2011, Libya descended into civil war, and its territory remains divided among warring factions.

It has become a major transit point to Europe for tens of thousands of African migrants. With few pathways for legal migration available, many pay smugglers to help them make the dangerous sea crossing.

Toll: In total, 661 people have died in the central Mediterranean this year, according to Flavio di Giacomo, a spokesman for the U.N. migration agency.

The number of deaths at sea includes people who went “missing” but after some hours are considered dead.
