The deployment is intended to strengthen the presence of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in Somalia, where Kenyan troops have been engaged in security operations since 2011 as part of regional and international efforts to combat Al-Shabaab and support stability in the country.

Hundreds of Kenyan soldiers underwent specialized peacekeeping training and are expected to be deployed to Somalia in the coming weeks, according to officials from the Kenya Defence Forces. Senior military commanders urged the troops to uphold professionalism and work closely with Somali security forces and other AUSSOM contingents operating in the country.

Lieutenant General William Kamoiro, Commander of Kenya’s Central Command, inspected the troops during their final preparations and emphasized the importance of cooperation with both Somali forces and other international partners participating in the mission.

Reports indicate that the newly trained soldiers will replace Kenyan troops who have been serving in Somalia for an extended period as part of the African Union mission.

The incoming forces are expected to be deployed to strategic areas of the Lower Jubba region in Jubaland State, where security operations against Al-Shabaab continue.

Kenyan authorities said the deployment forms part of a broader strategy aimed at combating Al-Shabaab and preventing the militant group from carrying out cross-border attacks inside Kenya. Officials stressed that maintaining security operations in Somalia remains essential to protecting Kenya’s national security and supporting regional stability.

Kenya remains one of the largest troop-contributing countries to AUSSOM and has played a significant role in security operations across southern Somalia over the past decade.

The latest deployment underscores Nairobi’s continued commitment to supporting efforts to stabilize Somalia and counter extremist threats in the Horn of Africa.
