Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has released an important statement reminding the international community of the official position previously taken by the African Union regarding the Somaliland issue.

The statement said that anyone who may have forgotten should revisit what the African Union itself decided concerning the recognition of Somaliland.

The ministry referred to the report produced by the African Union’s fact-finding mission that was sent to Somaliland in 2005. That report clearly stated that the union between Somaliland and Somalia in 1960 was never formally legalized, and that it ended in conflict and collapse during the period from 1960 to 1990.

For these reasons, the African Union at the time defined Somaliland’s pursuit of recognition as a historically unique case that cannot be compared to other cases on the continent.

The document cited by Israel further emphasized that the Somaliland case should not be viewed as opening the door to the fragmentation of African borders, but rather should be treated differently from other situations. The African Union therefore proposed that Somaliland’s status be discussed through a special approach based on the history and destiny of the people living in the region, as it is a self-justifying case.

This move by Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to once again draw global attention to the report comes at a time when debates over the recognition of Somaliland are intensifying, along with discussions about the role of the African Union in resolving the issue.

Johannesburg (Kaab TV) – South Africa has strongly condemned Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland, Somalia’s breakaway region, as an independent state, calling it a “direct threat” to peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.

In a statement, South Africa’s Foreign Ministry emphasized that Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected, warning that unilateral recognitions risk escalating tensions in an already fragile region. “Israel’s action legitimizes fragmentation and risks triggering a domino effect of instability,” the ministry said.

The ministry distinguished between decolonization and secession, noting: “The former restores sovereignty; the latter dismantles it.” South Africa reaffirmed its support for African Union principles, including uti possidetis, which upholds existing borders inherited at independence to prevent conflict.

The country urged the international community to reject what it described as Tel Aviv’s “external interference” and to support a united, stable Somalia.

Israel’s recognition makes it the first country in the world to formally acknowledge Somaliland as a sovereign state, drawing condemnation from Türkiye, a close ally of Somalia, as well as from several African and Middle Eastern nations.

The international backlash is growing, with many countries denouncing the move as a violation of international law and a threat to regional stability.

Since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991, Somaliland has operated as a de facto independent region, managing its own administration, politics, and security, but it has not achieved formal international recognition.

Mogadishu continues to refuse recognition of Somaliland’s independence, considers it an integral part of Somalia, and views any direct engagement with the region as a violation of the country’s sovereignty and unity.

The move has fueled global concern over actions that could destabilize the Horn of Africa and undermine regional security.

New York (Kaab TV) – Most members of the United Nations Security Council have criticized Israel’s recent recognition of Somaliland, warning during an emergency meeting that the move could destabilize Somalia and have wider regional repercussions, including for Palestinians in Gaza.

The meeting, held Monday in New York, was called after Israel became the first country to formally recognize Somaliland, a self-declared state that Somalia considers part of its sovereign territory.

Fourteen of the 15 Council members opposed the decision. The United States was the only member that did not condemn Israel, though it emphasized that its own policy on Somaliland remains unchanged.

Somalia’s ambassador to the UN, Abukar Dahir Osman, urged the Council to reject what he called an “act of aggression,” warning that the recognition threatens Somalia’s unity and could undermine stability in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. He also raised concerns that the move might be connected to proposals to relocate Palestinians from Gaza to northern Somalia.

“This utter disdain for law and morality must be stopped now,” Osman said.

The United States acknowledged Israel’s right to establish diplomatic relations but stressed that Washington has not altered its stance.

“There is no announcement to make regarding U.S. recognition of Somaliland,” said U.S. Deputy Ambassador Tammy Bruce, noting that American policy remains unchanged.

Israel’s Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Jonathan Miller, defended the decision, insisting it was not meant as a hostile act toward Somalia. He said recognition should be seen as an opportunity and does not preclude future dialogue between Somalia and Somaliland.

Several countries expressed concern about the broader implications of Israel’s move. Speaking for the Arab League, UN envoy Maged Abdelfattah Abdelaziz opposed any actions arising from the recognition that could facilitate forced displacement of Palestinians or the use of northern Somali ports for military purposes.

Pakistan’s Deputy Ambassador Muhammad Usman Iqbal Jadoon described Israel’s recognition as “deeply troubling,” particularly given past references to Somaliland as a potential destination for displaced Palestinians from Gaza.

Permanent Security Council members China and the United Kingdom also opposed the move. China’s UN envoy, Sun Lei, said Beijing strongly opposes actions that could divide Somalia’s territory, warning against supporting separatist movements for geopolitical gain.

Non-Council members, including South Africa, were invited to speak as well. South Africa’s UN Ambassador Mathu Joyini reaffirmed her country’s support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, citing international law, the UN Charter, and the African Union’s founding principles.

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – The leader of Yemen’s Houthi movement has warned that any Israeli presence in Somaliland would be considered a military target, sharply escalating opposition to Israel’s recent decision to recognise the self-declared region.

Abdel-Malik al-Houthi said on Monday that Israeli involvement in Somaliland represents an act of aggression against both Somalia and Yemen and poses a serious threat to regional stability.

In a statement circulated by Houthi-affiliated media, he declared that the group’s armed forces would treat any Israeli presence in the territory as a legitimate target.

Israel announced on Friday that it had formally recognised Somaliland, becoming the first country to extend official recognition to the territory. Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has remained unrecognised by the international community.

Al-Houthi warned that Israel’s move would have far-reaching consequences, describing it as a hostile act not only toward Somalia and its neighbouring African states, but also toward Yemen, the Red Sea region, and countries along both of its coastlines.

Somaliland, which occupies a strategic location along the Gulf of Aden, has long sought international recognition. Despite its lack of formal status, it operates with its own government institutions, currency, passport system, and security forces.

Tensions between Israel and the Houthis have risen since October 2023, when Israel launched its war on Gaza. Since then, Israel has carried out multiple strikes in Yemen in response to Houthi attacks, which the group says are in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

Israel’s recognition of Somaliland has drawn widespread criticism from regional and international actors, including the African Union, Egypt, Türkiye, the Gulf Cooperation Council, and the Saudi-based Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

The European Union has also reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – Somalia’s president has sharply criticised Israel’s decision to recognise the self-declared state of Somaliland, calling it a “blatant violation” of Somalia’s sovereignty and warning that the country will not permit its territory to be used by Israel to pursue regional conflicts.

Speaking at an emergency joint session of parliament on Sunday, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of committing what he described as the most serious breach of Somalia’s sovereignty in the nation’s history. He labelled Israel an “enemy” and urged Somalis to remain calm while standing firm in defence of national unity and independence.

“I call on the Somali people to stay composed and to protect the unity and sovereignty of our country, which is facing this open aggression,” Mohamud said.

Parliament unanimously adopted a resolution declaring Israel’s recognition of Somaliland “null and void.” While largely symbolic—given that Somalia has not exercised control over Somaliland since it declared independence in 1991, a move Mogadishu has never recognised—the resolution warns that any individuals or institutions undermining Somalia’s sovereignty will face prosecution under domestic and international law. It also instructs the government to raise the issue with the United Nations, the African Union, the Arab League and other regional organisations.

Netanyahu announced on Friday that Israel had established full diplomatic relations with Somaliland, presenting the decision as aligned with the US-brokered Abraham Accords, which normalised Israel’s relations with several Arab states. The move made Israel the first UN member state to formally recognise Somaliland, which has unsuccessfully sought international recognition for more than three decades.

Mohamud accused Israel of attempting to bring Middle Eastern conflicts into the Horn of Africa and pledged that Somalia would not allow its land to be used as a military base to attack other countries. He called on Somalis to put aside clan and regional divisions to confront what he described as an “existential threat” to the country’s unity.

“We must unite our wisdom and strength to defend our sovereignty and existence,” he said, urging Somaliland’s leaders to engage in serious dialogue to preserve Somalia’s territorial integrity.

Prime Minister Hamza Barre told Al Jazeera Arabic that Israel was seeking a strategic foothold in the Horn of Africa and urged it instead to recognise an independent Palestinian state.

Somaliland’s president, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, known as Cirro, defended Israel’s decision, insisting that recognition posed no threat to neighbouring states. He said Somaliland is grounded in Islamic principles of moderation, justice and coexistence, and denied that the move signalled hostility toward any Muslim country or community.

The decision triggered swift international condemnation. A joint statement issued on Saturday by 21 Arab and African countries, along with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, denounced Israel’s recognition as a serious violation of international law and the UN Charter. The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement backing Somalia’s position.

Regional leaders, including the presidents of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Djibouti, spoke with Mohamud to reaffirm their support for Somalia’s territorial integrity. Eritrea separately called on China to address the matter at the UN Security Council, comparing it to the Taiwan issue.

The European Union urged respect for Somalia’s sovereignty but stopped short of explicitly condemning Israel’s move, instead calling on authorities in Mogadishu and Hargeisa to pursue dialogue.

Israel’s recognition of Somaliland comes amid its ongoing war in Gaza, in which more than 70,000 Palestinians have been killed. Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice, while Netanyahu is the subject of an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of the Siad Barre regime. While it controls much of northwestern Somalia and operates its own government, currency and institutions, parts of its eastern regions remain under administrations loyal to Mogadishu.

Asked on Friday whether the United States would recognise Somaliland, President Donald Trump told the New York Post that it would not, though he said the issue was under review. “Does anyone really know what Somaliland is?” he remarked.

The UN Security Council is expected to take up the issue on Monday.

Hargeisa (Kaab TV) – Somaliland police have arrested Sheikh Mohamed Ali Kaariye, one of Somaliland’s religious scholars, after he posted a message on social media opposing the recognition that the Government of Israel reportedly granted to Somaliland yesterday.

In a post shared on his Facebook page, Kaariye wrote:

“Rise up, rise up, disbelief has come—rise up. Jews have come—rise up. Reject Netanyahu—rise up.”

Sheikh Mohamed Ali Kaariye was reportedly detained shortly after publishing the post.

A statement released by the Somaliland Police said that the forces had arrested individuals accused of openly opposing the recognition, unity, and existence of Somaliland.

The Somaliland Police Command warned that legal action would be taken against anyone involved in activities that undermine the unity, security, and sovereignty of Somaliland.

“We call on the people of the Republic of Somaliland to stand united against such individuals and to share information about them with the Somaliland Police,” the police statement said.

The Ministry of Interior and Security of Somaliland congratulated the public on the recognition and urged citizens to remain vigilant. Police forces were also placed on high alert across Somaliland.

“We inform the public to continue being alert, as has always been the practice, in safeguarding the security and sovereignty of Somaliland, and to keep a close watch on hostile elements who are troubled by the successes achieved by the people,” said a statement from the Ministry of Interior and Security.

The ministry’s statement added: “We warn anyone who attempts, directly or indirectly, to act against the interests of the people, or who tries to cause instability through words or actions, that the security agencies are monitoring closely and remain vigilant.”

The Government of Israel reportedly fully recognized Somaliland yesterday, becoming the first country to do so after 35 years during which Somaliland has been seeking international recognition. Meanwhile, U.S. media outlets report that South Sudan has also recognized Somaliland, although this has not yet been fully confirmed.
