The minister stated that Somaliland is seriously interested in reaching a strategic agreement with the United States. “We are ready to grant the United States special access to our mineral resources. We are also open to providing military bases,” he said.

He added that he is optimistic the talks will yield positive results. “We believe we will reach an agreement with the United States,” he told AFP.

The minister also did not rule out the possibility of Israel establishing a military base in Somaliland, particularly in the strategic area of Berbera. The President of Somaliland recently announced that he is working on agreements related to minerals and technology with Israel.

According to the AFP report, Somaliland officials argue that the territory is rich in valuable minerals such as lithium and coltan, although these claims have not yet been independently verified.

The statement comes as Somaliland intensifies its efforts to gain international recognition, following Israel’s expression of support in December for Somaliland’s independence, as the territory’s geographic location continues to grow in strategic importance for global security and trade.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government of Somalia has strongly opposed the possibility of any agreement between Somaliland and foreign governments, maintaining that Somaliland remains part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has accused unnamed neighboring countries of attempting to exploit Israel’s recognition of Somaliland for short-term gains, warning that Somalia’s territorial integrity is a non-negotiable “red line.”

In an interview with the London-based Arabic newspaper Asharq al-Awsat, the president said certain regional actors are seeking to capitalize on the diplomatic fallout from Israel’s December recognition of Somaliland, a self-declared republic that declared independence from Somalia in 1991.

“Some countries in the region want to seize this opportunity to advance short-term interests, jeopardizing Somalia’s unity and the stability of the region,” Hassan Sheikh said. Although he declined to name specific states, he suggested that some may perceive Israel’s move as offering limited strategic advantages.

Since the announcement, several governments and regional organizations have reaffirmed their support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. However, neighboring countries such as Ethiopia and Kenya have not publicly clarified their positions on Israel’s decision.

Relations between Ethiopia and Somalia have been strained in recent years, particularly after Addis Ababa signed an agreement with Somaliland two years ago, triggering diplomatic tensions with Mogadishu.

Hassan Sheikh said his administration would deploy all available policy tools to safeguard the country’s unity. “Somalia’s territorial integrity is a red line that cannot be crossed,” he emphasized.

Although Somaliland has maintained its own government, security forces, and institutions for more than three decades, it has yet to secure broad international recognition. Israel remains the only country to have formally recognized it as an independent state.

The president reiterated his position at the second Italy-Africa Summit in Addis Ababa on Friday, urging member states of the African Union to reject external interference and uphold the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity enshrined in the U.N. Charter and the AU Constitutive Act.

On Thursday, the African Union Peace and Security Council reinforced that stance, reaffirming Somalia’s sovereignty and condemning Israel’s unilateral recognition of what it described as the “so-called Republic of Somaliland.” The council called for the decision to be revoked and reiterated its opposition to external interference in the internal affairs of African states.

The dispute over Somaliland’s status has added another layer of strain to the already fragile Horn of Africa, where diplomatic rivalries, security challenges, and shifting alliances continue to test regional stability.

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has rejected any suggestion that Palestinians could be resettled in Somaliland, warning that such a move would strip them of their fundamental rights.

Speaking in Las Anod during the inauguration of the newly formed North East State administration, President Mohamud said Palestinians have endured decades of conflict without abandoning their land and should not be turned into what he described as “stateless people.”

“For 70 years they have been shelled daily, artillery has been fired, yet they have not been displaced,” Mohamud said. “Are we now going to make it easy for them to be pushed off their land?”

He referred to the killing of children and civilians and the destruction of homes and cities, saying the devastation now resembles “the Day of Judgment.”

“There are people in the world known as stateless people,” he said. “They are alive, they are allowed to eat and drink to survive, but they have no rights, no sense of belonging. We do not agree for the Palestinian people to become stateless.”

Mohamud stressed that Palestinians cannot be relocated in any manner that deprives them of their political rights or land ownership, adding that Somalia would never accept such an outcome.

“Killing two birds with one stone is not possible,” he said. “We reject this.”

Jeddah (Kaab TV) — Türkiye on Saturday reaffirmed its firm support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, strongly rejecting Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent state.

The statement was delivered by Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Musa Kulaklıkaya while chairing the 22nd Extraordinary Session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers, convened in Saudi Arabia to address Israel’s recent move.

According to a statement shared by the Turkish Foreign Ministry on its official NSosyal platform, Kulaklıkaya underscored Türkiye’s solidarity with Somalia and described Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as a violation of international law.

He also reiterated Türkiye’s “unwavering support” for international efforts to protect Palestinian rights and to promote lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.

Israel announced on Dec. 26 that it had formally recognized Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, becoming the first country to do so.

The decision has been widely condemned by Somalia, regional governments, and international organizations, which argue that it undermines international law and poses a threat to regional peace and security.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of the central government and has since functioned as a self-governing entity with its own administration, security forces, and electoral processes. Despite this, it has not received international recognition as a sovereign state.

Türkiye’s stance is consistent with those of the African Union, the Arab League, and the OIC, all of which have reaffirmed support for Somalia’s internationally recognized borders and rejected unilateral recognition of Somaliland.

The OIC meeting highlights growing diplomatic pressure on Israel as Somalia works to consolidate international opposition to what it describes as a violation of its sovereignty and a dangerous precedent for the Horn of Africa.

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) — Somali religious leaders, alongside large numbers of demonstrators, gathered in Mogadishu on Wednesday to protest Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, condemning the decision as foreign interference that endangers Somalia’s unity, sovereignty and religious identity.

The rally, held at Daljirka Dahson, brought together clerics, traditional elders, intellectuals and residents from across the capital. Protesters waved placards and chanted slogans rejecting what they described as attempts to divide the country or weaken the Somali nation.

Speakers at the event emphasized that Somaliland— the northwestern region that declared independence in 1991— remains an inseparable part of Somalia and cannot be detached through unilateral recognition by foreign governments.

Religious scholars warned of what they called grave religious, social and political repercussions if outside interference continues, arguing that the issue extends beyond politics to questions of national identity and Muslim unity.

Sheikh Bashir Ahmed Salad, chairman of the Somali Council of Ulama, criticized engagement with Israel, saying Somalia’s internal disputes should be resolved through dialogue among Somalis.

“The Muslim community discusses and settles its own affairs,” Salad said. “Turning to Israel to resolve problems is not the right path. Israel prioritizes its own interests, not ours.” He also denounced the Abraham Accords, saying they legitimize Israel’s policies toward Palestinians.

The clerics urged Somaliland’s leadership to reconsider decisions and relationships they said could undermine Somalia’s unity, calling instead for Somali-led dialogue and reconciliation.

Demonstrators also appealed to the international community to respect Somalia’s sovereignty and avoid actions that could further destabilize an already fragile region.

Israel last month became the first country to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, prompting strong backlash from Somalia’s federal government and widespread condemnation from regional and international organizations. The African Union, Arab League and United Nations have reiterated their support for Somalia’s territorial integrity, rejecting any recognition of Somaliland outside internationally agreed frameworks.

Wednesday’s protest underscored the depth of opposition within Somalia to Israel’s decision, as religious leaders and civil society joined political authorities in calling for unity and resistance to external pressure amid heightened diplomatic and security tensions.

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) — The African Union Peace and Security Council on Tuesday denounced Israel’s unilateral recognition of Somaliland, calling for the move to be reversed immediately and warning that it undermines Somalia’s sovereignty and could destabilize the Horn of Africa.

In a communiqué released after its 1324th ministerial-level meeting on Jan. 6, the council reaffirmed its rejection of any action that threatens the sovereignty, territorial integrity, unity and stability of the Federal Republic of Somalia. It urged all African Union member states and international partners to reaffirm Somalia’s unity and to oppose what it described as unlawful actions that violate international law and AU principles.

The council also called on AU members to support efforts by relevant United Nations bodies to safeguard Somalia’s territorial integrity, including any collective measures taken at the U.N. General Assembly.

“Any attempt to alter borders by force or through illegal means to undermine the unity and territorial integrity of an AU member state violates the Constitutive Act and sets a dangerous precedent,” the statement said, cautioning that such actions could have serious consequences for peace, security and stability across Africa.

Member states and international partners warned that recognizing Somaliland could threaten peace on the continent—particularly in the Horn of Africa—undermine regional security cooperation and erode established international norms.

The council praised Somalia’s federal government for its continued state-building efforts and stressed that dialogue within Somalia remains the only acceptable means of resolving political differences between the federal government and its member states.

It further urged the African Union Commission, in close coordination with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the East African Community (EAC), to continue supporting inclusive political dialogue to address Somalia’s challenges peacefully.

The statement echoed earlier comments by AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, who on Dec. 26, 2025, rejected any initiative to recognize Somaliland as an independent state. Youssouf said such moves contradict the fundamental principles of both the African Union and the United Nations and risk setting a precedent that could undermine peace, stability and Africa’s long-term integration goals under Agenda 2063.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of the central government, but it has not received international recognition. Israel’s decision has drawn strong opposition from Somalia, regional governments and multilateral institutions, heightening diplomatic tensions and raising concerns over regional stability.

The African Union said it will continue engaging international partners to ensure respect for Somalia’s internationally recognized borders, emphasizing that unity and territorial integrity are essential to lasting peace in Somalia and the wider region.

Hargeisa (Kaab TV) – Somaliland has informed the Republic of Djibouti that it has suspended Air Djibouti flights from operating within its territory, following the Djiboutian government’s stance among countries opposing the recognition of Israel under President Ismail Omar Guelleh.

The Somaliland administration reportedly sent a letter to Air Djibouti, although it has not been officially released to the public. However, officials from the Civil Aviation Authority are expected to address the media regarding the matter.

The flight suspension is set to take effect tomorrow, Wednesday, January 7, 2026. From that date onward, all regular Air Djibouti flights will be completely halted, according to reports.

So far, no statement has been issued by the Republic of Djibouti or by the management of the airline whose flights have been suspended, clarifying the contents of the letter or the combined travel ban order. A response from their side is still awaited.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Somaliland has expressed support for the action taken by U.S. forces in arresting the former President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, describing it as a step toward restoring the rule of law in that country.

In an official press statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Somaliland formally declared its support for the United States, characterizing the move led by former President Trump as an effort to restore constitutional order, democracy, and the supremacy of the law in Venezuela.

Somaliland stated that it believes U.S.-led actions could help reduce the humanitarian crisis, combat transnational criminal networks, and support a peaceful, Venezuelan-led political transition.

The statement further noted that Somaliland views these efforts as consistent with international law and collective security principles, while also strengthening respect for human rights, accountability, and Venezuela’s national sovereignty.

Somaliland’s support comes amid recent reports claiming that Venezuelan authorities, including the former president, had been detained by U.S. forces—reports that have triggered mixed reactions from the international community.

It is noteworthy that Venezuela has been among the countries that openly opposed the recognition of Somaliland. Since yesterday, Somaliland citizens have been circulating on social media a statement in which the Venezuelan government expressed support for Somalia’s sovereignty.

Somaliland recently received official recognition from Israel, a close ally of the United States, and has stated that it is also seeking recognition from the U.S. Somaliland’s support for Maduro’s arrest reflects its desire to strengthen its relations with Washington.

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has released an important statement reminding the international community of the official position previously taken by the African Union regarding the Somaliland issue.

The statement said that anyone who may have forgotten should revisit what the African Union itself decided concerning the recognition of Somaliland.

The ministry referred to the report produced by the African Union’s fact-finding mission that was sent to Somaliland in 2005. That report clearly stated that the union between Somaliland and Somalia in 1960 was never formally legalized, and that it ended in conflict and collapse during the period from 1960 to 1990.

For these reasons, the African Union at the time defined Somaliland’s pursuit of recognition as a historically unique case that cannot be compared to other cases on the continent.

The document cited by Israel further emphasized that the Somaliland case should not be viewed as opening the door to the fragmentation of African borders, but rather should be treated differently from other situations. The African Union therefore proposed that Somaliland’s status be discussed through a special approach based on the history and destiny of the people living in the region, as it is a self-justifying case.

This move by Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to once again draw global attention to the report comes at a time when debates over the recognition of Somaliland are intensifying, along with discussions about the role of the African Union in resolving the issue.

London (Kaab TV) – The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, political independence, and national unity following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the UK government emphasized that it does not recognize Somaliland’s independence, stressing that any change to the region’s status must result from dialogue between Mogadishu and Hargeisa.

“We maintain that any change to Somaliland’s status depends on mutual agreement between Mogadishu and Hargeisa, conducted through dialogue, and must align with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter,” the statement said. “We regret any actions that could undermine peace and security in the region.”

The UK called for renewed efforts by the Federal Government of Somalia and Somaliland authorities to resolve their differences and cooperate on shared security challenges.

“Al-Shabaab and other terrorist groups exploit internal divisions in Somalia,” the statement noted. “We encourage Mogadishu and Hargeisa to engage in dialogue, supported by regional bodies and the international community, to address these divisions.”

London also highlighted the importance of sustained international support for Somalia’s security transition. The statement noted that earlier this month, the UN Security Council renewed authorizations for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), extended UN logistical support via the UN Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), and maintained sanctions aimed at weakening Al-Shabaab.

In September, the UK pledged over $30 million to support Somalia’s security transition, including $22 million for AUSSOM. The statement reaffirmed the UK’s role as a close and longstanding partner of Somalia and its commitment to assisting the federal government in building a secure and stable nation.

The UK also welcomed the peaceful conduct of the Mogadishu local council elections on December 25, 2025, reiterating its support for Somalia’s democratic aspirations and urging all political actors to work together to reach consensus on the next steps in the country’s political process.
