MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – A statement issued by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) addressed the ongoing political situation in Somalia and called on former Federal Government leaders and opposition figures to return to the path of dialogue.

The Secretary-General of IGAD urged Somali political stakeholders to preserve peace and dialogue while focusing on constructive negotiations capable of producing meaningful outcomes.

IGAD said it was “closely monitoring developments” in Somalia and expressed concern over rising political tensions between the Federal Government and some Federal Member States.

IGAD also called on former Federal Government leaders and opposition groups to take collective responsibility for establishing an effective dialogue process through a framework based on stability, good governance, and strengthening state institutions.

In its statement, IGAD expressed support for efforts aimed at promoting dialogue, peace, stability, and laying a strong foundation for Somalia’s future and that of the wider region.

The regional bloc joins several other parties that have issued public appeals to former Federal Government officials and opposition leaders following the collapse of talks on Friday regarding the country’s electoral process.

Former Federal Government leaders, citing Somalia’s newly adopted constitution, argued that the mandates of various state institutions are set to expire on May 15, 2027.

Meanwhile, the opposition, relying on the 2012 Constitution, maintains that the terms of the country’s leaders ended on May 15, 2026.
