Hargeisa (Kaab TV) – The recognition of Somaliland yesterday by the Government of Israel is an important and effective step toward peace, security, and justice in the Horn of Africa. This decision goes beyond politics.

It is an acknowledgment of a political reality shaped by a history rooted in resilience and by the clear will of a people who have chosen stability, democratic self-governance, and security for more than thirty years.

The recognition of the Republic of Somaliland is not merely a political decision; it is a moral acknowledgment of history, sacrifice, and the fundamental right of people to live in peace and dignity.

When communities are allowed to determine their political future through peaceful and democratic means, the result is often greater overall stability, reduced conflict, and stronger cooperation among neighbors.

I do not say this as an outsider. I am someone who was born in Somalia and grew up during the most devastating years of the 1990s. I witnessed firsthand the violence, the collapse of the state, and the suffering inflicted on civilians. It was during that period that Somaliland withdrew from its union with Somalia, following the brutal massacres carried out by Somali government forces.

Those experiences taught me personally the true meaning of injustice. They also shaped my firm belief that no society should be forced to remain within a political system that has subjected it to continuous violence and the denial of its rights.

Our region, the Horn of Africa, is in urgent need of stability. Today, terrorist groups, organized criminal networks, climate disasters, and worsening food insecurity pose serious threats to the lives of our people.

Somalia must recognize and accept the sovereignty of Somaliland. We have all known this was coming—that one day Somaliland would become independent—and that day has now arrived.

Mogadishu should welcome and congratulate Somaliland on this historic step of recognition. The people of Somaliland are our brothers and sisters, not our enemies.

We can achieve many positive outcomes through mutual respect and dialogue between Mogadishu and Hargeisa. Both sides should open the door to constructive cooperation, regional partnership, and a future built on coexistence rather than denial.

The recognition of Somaliland does not erase the shared history of our people—a history rooted in kinship and brotherhood. Instead, it allows both societies to move forward with dignity and a clear sense of purpose.

Once again, as someone from a community that has experienced injustice, I strongly believe that it is the right of every people, every nation, and every country to self-determination.

Best wishes and congratulations to the people of #Somaliland!

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has stated that Egypt is working to achieve stability and security in the Horn of Africa in order to strengthen the security of the Red Sea maritime corridor.

President al-Sisi explained that this effort is based on the importance of this waterway to both regional and global security.

He added that Egypt intends to participate in the new African Union mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and is making strong efforts to secure the necessary funding for the operation.

During his meeting with African ministers and heads of delegations, along with representatives of the African Union Commission and regional economic communities participating in the second ministerial meeting of the Russia–Africa Partnership Forum hosted by Egypt, and attended by Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdel-Aty, President al-Sisi said:

“Despite the efforts being made by our countries, Africa’s development still faces many challenges, including weak infrastructure, insufficient funding, and numerous risks.”

President al-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with brotherly African countries such as Somalia to combat terrorism through a comprehensive approach that enhances security, development, and social dimensions.

This includes the role of Al-Azhar and the programs of the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding.

A demonstration led by local forces, women, and youth took place in Abudwak, while clashes erupted at two hotels where members of the disputed Electoral Commission were staying.

Locals told KAAB TV that clan militias have entered the town, and tensions remain high.

Local men and women gathered in the town’s centre on Tuesday as the denounced the registration process which was set to begin in Abudwak.

Daud Mohamed, a member of the Abudwak youth, said protests might continue in the coming days, and there is growing concern that the situation could escalate into violence.

Other parts of Galmudug have also rejected similar voter registration efforts, with residents of Abudwak stating they do not want to participate in what they call a controversial federal-led process.

Opposition politicians said the people of Abudwak have been denied development projects and have no meaningful role in the electoral process, which has led them to reject it.

They accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of trying to subjugate the people of Galgadud by enforcing a unilateral electoral process controlled by himself.

“No election dictated by a single politician should be allowed. This is the position supported by the Somali Salvation Forum,” said Mohamed Adan Kofi, a presidential candidate for the Galmudug region.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Four members of Somalia’s opposition Salvation Council announced on Monday, August 25, 2025, that they had withdrawn from the opposition alliance and defected to president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s side.

The announcement was made during a press conference in Mogadishu, where the four politicians appeared alongside Deputy Prime Minister Salah Jama and Justice Minister Hassan Mo’allim.

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who has been under mounting pressure from the opposition, quickly welcomed the move, saying the four had reached an understanding with him linked to the national elections he plans to organize—an election widely viewed as uncertain and contested.

The Four Politicians Who Left the Opposition Council are:

Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke – Former Prime Minister

Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden – Former Speaker of Parliament and ex-President of South West State

Mohamed Mursal Abdirahman – Former Speaker of Parliament

Dahir Mohamud Geelle – Former advisor to President Hassan Sheikh on Arab affairs and Somalia’s former ambassador to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)

The Deal and the Payout

According to insiders, President Hassan Sheikh offered the four politicians a total of $1 million, with each receiving $250,000.

“This was just a start,” the source said, noting that the four men had claimed they were heavily in debt and needed to settle some outstanding bills.

“Playing in Somali politics is not a cheap game, as it often involves paying large bribes and securing the support of nearly everyone in exchange for backing.”

In addition to the cash, each politician reportedly secured personal political promises:

Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, for example, is expected to launch a new political party in Mogadishu after relations with the UAE, his long-time backer, soured when the Gulf state shifted its support to Puntland State.

Omar is believed to be fighting to regain his parliamentary seat as a political base, which may put him on a collision course with Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni, a fierce rival of Hassan Sheikh.

Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden reportedly promised support to contest the South West State presidency, potentially undermining the re-election hopes of incumbent Abdiasis Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen, whose term has already expired but enjoys being a close ally of Hassan Sheikh.

Mohamed Mursal Abdirahman is guaranteed Hassan Sheikh’s backing to retain his parliamentary seat in the 2026 elections, paving the way for him to pursue the speakership again. However, success would ultimately depend on his clan constituency delegates.

Dahir Mohamud Geelle has been promised appointment as Somalia’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia. Sources note that Geelle had grown disillusioned with his previous OIC post, which offered little financial leverage, while the Saudi embassy is seen as a lucrative post often linked to labour migration and human smuggling routes.

Political Implications

While the deal highlights how President Hassan Sheikh is using money and patronage to weaken his rivals, analysts believe the defection of the four will not significantly alter the strength of the opposition Salvation Council.

When asked about the defection, opposition member and MP Abdirahman Abdishakur told BBC Somali that the four colleagues “had submitted their resignations as they made their own excuses to strike personal deals with Hassan Sheikh.”

However, Dahir Mohamud Geelle was quick to deny the bribery accusations, hinting that even if any payments were made, “it was the Somali government who paid them, not a foreign government.”

He appeared to accuse the opposition of “collaborating with foreign states”, though he did not specify which ones.

Emerging reports suggest that opposition figures, particularly from the Hawiye clan, plan to relocate their headquarters away from Mogadishu’s airport zone and embed themselves directly within residential neighborhoods—where they are expected to intensify grassroots political mobilization against President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

GAROWE (Kaab TV) – A longstanding tribal conflict between the Kaskii Qabe and Reer Cumar clans of Majeertaan has officially ended near Garowe after 17 years, following a deadly car accident in Mogadishu.

The feud began after a man’s death in a car crash in Mogadishu, which sparked decades of violence affecting many families and nomadic communities unaffiliated with the conflict.

Despite several attempts at mediation, reconciliation between the two clans had repeatedly failed—until Wednesday, when religious leaders and elders facilitated a peace agreement on the outskirts of Garowe.

Businessman Jama Dhaga Dheere confirmed that the Kaskii Qabe clan agreed to pay a diya (compensation) of 55 camels to the family of the deceased.

This settlement, a reduction from the original demand, had been reached about 10 months ago.

Officials from the Puntland regional administration and security forces witnessed the ceremony where both clans declared the conflict resolved.

Tribal disputes in Somalia frequently arise from killings or property disputes and can last many years, often escalating into deadly violence.

With Somalia’s ongoing instability and weak formal justice system, many conflicts are resolved through traditional mechanisms involving religious and clan elders, as seen in this case.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Opposition MP Dahir Amin Jeesow, a member of Somalia’s federal parliament, has accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of adding a new chapter to the country’s constitution that was drafted externally and inserted unlawfully.

In an exclusive interview with Kaab TV, MP Jeesow said that it is not within parliament’s mandate to amend the constitution, arguing that the Provisional Constitution was a pact agreed upon by representatives from all federal member states.

“It is not our job to amend the constitution. Among the four chapters, there is one that was written outside and inserted,” MP Jeesow stated.

Previously, there have been accusations that most of the altered provisions in the constitution were written by President Hassan Sheikh himself.

The federal member states of Puntland and Jubbaland, along with opposition politicians in Mogadishu — including former leaders — have rejected the constitutional amendments, calling them illegal.

MP Jeesow also criticized President Hassan Sheikh for dividing the country and for previously stating that he could do without the federal states of Puntland and Jubbaland – two key federal member states.

“Jubbaland and Puntland are not missing anything. It was President Hassan Sheikh himself who said he doesn’t need those two administrations,” said MP Jeesow.

Somalia is currently experiencing a political stalemate, primarily related to uncertain elections for 2026 and disagreements between the Federal Government and Federal Member States over the change of the constitution.

This impasse has led to concerns about the country’s stability and progress.

International partners have urged Somali leaders to prioritize national interests and find a resolution.
