Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has reportedly agreed to hold national elections within seven months, a development that could mark a significant breakthrough in efforts to resolve a prolonged political dispute over the country’s electoral process.

The reported concession comes at a time of heightened political tensions, with the federal government, opposition groups, and some federal member states divided over the timing, structure, and administration of Somalia’s next elections.

Although no official agreement has yet been announced, political sources say the move emerged from ongoing negotiations aimed at reaching a broad-based electoral settlement and avoiding a deeper political crisis.

For months, Somalia’s electoral process has been at the center of intense debate.

The federal government has advocated for a transition toward a one-person, one-vote system, arguing that the country must move beyond the indirect clan-based electoral model that has dominated Somali politics for decades.

Under the current system, lawmakers and senior political leaders are selected through a process involving clan delegates and political agreements rather than direct voting by citizens.

President Hassan Sheikh has consistently maintained that Somalia’s long-term stability depends on giving citizens the opportunity to directly elect their leaders.

His administration has promoted electoral and constitutional reforms designed to establish universal suffrage, presenting the changes as a necessary step toward strengthening democracy and state institutions.

Opposition leaders, however, have raised concerns about both the pace and manner of the proposed reforms.

They argue that major constitutional and electoral changes should only be implemented through broad political consensus and consultation with all stakeholders, including federal member states and opposition parties.

Critics have warned that pursuing such reforms without agreement could deepen political divisions and undermine trust in the electoral process.

If the proposed seven-month timeline is formally adopted, it would provide a relatively short but crucial window for preparing the election.

Key tasks would include finalizing an electoral framework, establishing a clear timetable, registering voters, identifying and securing polling stations, training election officials, and addressing logistical challenges across the country.

Despite the reported progress, several major questions remain unresolved.

Political stakeholders have yet to reach agreement on the type of election to be held, the institution responsible for administering the vote, the voting system to be used, the role of federal member states, and the mechanisms needed to ensure that all political actors accept the outcome of the process.

The dispute over elections has strained relations between the federal government and several opposition figures, as well as some regional administrations.

The disagreements have also become intertwined with broader debates over constitutional amendments, power-sharing arrangements, and the future direction of Somalia’s federal system.

International partners have closely monitored the situation and repeatedly urged Somali leaders to resolve their differences through dialogue.

The United Nations, the African Union, and other international stakeholders have called for an inclusive political agreement that can provide a credible roadmap toward elections while avoiding instability.

The electoral issue is particularly important because it coincides with Somalia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen state institutions and continue military operations against Al-Shabaab.

Political uncertainty is widely seen as a potential distraction from security priorities and could complicate efforts to maintain momentum in the fight against the militant group.

Even if a seven-month election timeline is agreed upon, Somalia faces significant challenges in meeting such a deadline. The first challenge is political consensus.

Without a broadly accepted agreement, any electoral process risks triggering fresh disputes and questions over legitimacy.

The second challenge is security. Large parts of the country continue to face threats from Al-Shabaab, which regularly carries out attacks against government institutions, security forces, and civilian targets.

Ensuring secure conditions for voter registration, campaigning, and polling would be a major undertaking.

The third challenge is technical preparedness. Organizing a nationwide election requires extensive planning, funding, voter registration systems, election infrastructure, and trained personnel.

Many analysts have questioned whether these requirements can be fully met within a seven-month timeframe.

Coordination between the federal government and regional states will also be critical.

Previous electoral disputes in Somalia have often stemmed from disagreements between Mogadishu and federal member states over authority, representation, and election management.

If the reported seven-month proposal evolves into a formal political agreement, it could represent an important step toward reducing tensions and restoring confidence among Somalia’s political stakeholders.

A credible election accepted by both political actors and the wider public could strengthen democratic legitimacy and contribute to greater political stability.

However, observers caution that the success of any electoral roadmap will depend not only on timelines but also on the willingness of all parties to compromise and work toward a shared vision for Somalia’s political future.

For now, attention remains focused on ongoing talks between the federal government, opposition leaders, and federal member states, which will determine whether the reported seven-month timeline can be transformed into an agreed and workable election plan.

Former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khayre has launched a strong criticism of the government led by Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, accusing it of forcibly displacing hundreds of thousands of people from parts of Mogadishu during its time in office.

Khayre claimed that around 500,000 people have been displaced within the capital, saying they were removed from more than 150 locations where they had previously lived.

He described the alleged evictions as a major humanitarian and political issue, particularly given the large number of families affected.

His remarks come amid growing tensions between the Federal Government and opposition figures over land ownership, demolitions and forced evictions in Mogadishu.

Disputes over land have repeatedly brought residents into confrontation with landowners and government authorities, while the destruction of homes has raised concerns about the protection of civilians and property rights.

The impact of large-scale displacement can extend beyond the loss of housing.

Families may be forced to leave schools and workplaces, while small businesses can lose their premises and sources of income.

For vulnerable households, repeated displacement can also increase dependence on humanitarian assistance.

Khayre’s accusations form part of broader criticism from opposition politicians who have accused the Hassan Sheikh administration of mishandling land issues in the capital and using government authority in ways that serve particular interests.

The government, however, has maintained that efforts to regulate land and organize the capital are part of broader efforts to improve urban management and address long-standing land disputes.

The figure of 500,000 displaced people and the claim involving more than 150 locations have not been independently verified in the information provided.

The allegations therefore require clarification and supporting evidence, particularly regarding the number of people affected, the locations involved and the circumstances surrounding their displacement.

The government now faces pressure to respond directly to Khayre’s allegations and provide its own figures and explanation of the evictions.

With land disputes already contributing to political tensions in Mogadishu, the issue could become an increasingly important point of confrontation between the government and its opponents.

High-level political talks between the Somali Federal Government and the opposition coalition opened in Mogadishu on Tuesday, in what is being widely viewed as one of the most consequential negotiations in recent years over the country’s electoral process, constitutional dispute, and political transition.

The closed-door meeting is taking place under an unprecedented international mediation and guarantee framework, with Turkey, ambassadors from several Western countries, the European Union, and the United Nations directly participating as facilitators and observers. Journalists have not been granted access to the negotiations.

The involvement of major international partners reflects growing concern over Somalia’s prolonged political impasse and increasing pressure on both sides to reach a comprehensive agreement on elections, constitutional reforms, and the country’s broader political future.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, the negotiations are centered on several critical issues, including the framework for the next national elections, constitutional disagreements, power-sharing arrangements, and the management of Somalia’s ongoing political transition.

The talks come amid heightened political tensions following months of disputes over electoral reforms and governance. Domestic political actors and international partners have repeatedly urged Somali leaders to resolve their differences through dialogue and consensus in order to prevent further instability.

The Future Council, which brings together Puntland, Jubaland, and the National Salvation Forum, enters the negotiations with significantly greater political leverage than in previous rounds. The coalition has increasingly been recognized by international partners as a key stakeholder whose participation is considered essential to any sustainable political settlement.

That recognition marks a notable shift from the Federal Government’s earlier position, which had resisted granting the opposition formal political status in negotiations concerning Somalia’s future governance.

Observers say the active role being played by Turkey and Western partners is intended not only to facilitate dialogue but also to provide international guarantees that any agreements reached will be implemented, rather than remaining political commitments without enforcement.

Diplomatic analysts also view the meeting as evidence that Somalia’s political crisis has entered a new phase, where major national decisions are increasingly being shaped through international engagement alongside domestic negotiations.

The outcome of the talks is expected to have far-reaching implications for Somalia’s electoral roadmap, constitutional reforms, institutional legitimacy, and political stability. With deep divisions remaining between the government and opposition, many observers consider the negotiations a critical opportunity to prevent further political polarization and lay the groundwork for a broader national consensus on the country’s future.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Opposition politicians from Puntland with close ties to Somalia’s Federal Government, who had been in the port city of Bosaso in recent days, held a meeting yesterday afternoon with several traditional elders and community leaders in the town of Qardho.

The delegation was led by Abdiasamad Gallan, a political adviser to Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. During the meeting, the politicians discussed the purpose of their visit to Puntland, describing it as a political awareness and outreach campaign, while also strongly criticizing Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni and his administration.

In a symbolic gesture during the gathering, some of the elders in Qardho honored President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud with a horse, praising his leadership and describing his administration as one that has guided Somalia in a positive direction. The honor was formally received on the president’s behalf by adviser Abdiasamad Gallan.

The opposition politicians later traveled to Garowe, the administrative capital of Puntland, where they are currently staying as political activities and consultations continue.

The visit comes amid ongoing political tensions between Puntland authorities and the Federal Government, with disagreements over governance, constitutional matters, and political influence continuing to shape relations between the two sides.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) — The Somali opposition coalition, the Somali Future Council, has issued a cautious response to a recent call for dialogue by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, as the country faces mounting political and security tensions ahead of the end of the federal government’s term on May 15.

In a statement released Tuesday, the Council said it “responsibly welcomes” the President’s invitation to a meeting scheduled for May 10, 2026, aimed at resolving the ongoing electoral impasse.

However, the opposition bloc expressed deep skepticism about the government’s intentions, noting that previous engagements were conducted “in good faith and integrity,” while accusing the President of pursuing unilateral constitutional changes.

The Council also pointed to what it described as contradictory actions by the government, highlighting that the invitation to dialogue was followed a day later by the announcement of an election timetable without broader consensus. It further raised concerns over the continued displacement of vulnerable communities and the arrest of young people, arguing these developments undermine trust in the proposed talks.

“Such actions indicate that the invitation is not part of a genuine effort toward inclusive dialogue,” the statement said.

Earlier this week, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said he was open to engaging opposition groups to break the deadlock over elections, which remain unresolved just days before the constitutional end of his term.

The Somali Future Council reiterated its willingness to participate in meaningful negotiations but stressed that credible dialogue requires an enabling environment. It called on the President to halt unilateral electoral processes and commit to a mutually agreed, independent mediation mechanism.

The opposition alliance also insisted that a political agreement on elections must be reached before May 15. Failing that, it warned it would take what it described as “responsible measures,” in coordination with the Somali public, to safeguard the country’s unity and statehood.

Somalia is currently facing a deepening political crisis. The term of the federal parliament expired on April 14, while no agreement has yet been reached on the electoral model or timeline. Growing tensions have fueled fears of potential violence, with opposition leaders warning against any attempt to impose elections without consensus or extend the President’s mandate.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Talks between the Future of Somalia Council and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud have encountered a new setback after the meetings scheduled for today, Saturday, and yesterday were cancelled.

The meetings, which began last week, have so far resulted in only two sessions. The first meeting took place at the Turkish-owned Decale Hotel, while the second was held at Villa Somalia, where the leaders of the Future of Somalia Council met with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

During that meeting, a BKM-type rifle was reportedly stolen from the security detail of the President of Jubaland, Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Ahmed Madobe).

On Thursday, the two sides debated two major issues, according to sources close to the opposition.

The two key points discussed—but on which no agreement was reached—were the amended constitution, which the Future of Somalia Council opposes, and the nature of the 2026 elections and how they should be conducted.

President Hassan Sheikh is said to have been reluctant to accept these points.

Sources told Kaab TV that the two sides agreed to establish joint committees to continue the talks. Although there were already committees representing both sides, they agreed to form new ones to move the discussions forward.

On Friday, the opposition alliance released the list of its members who will serve on the agreed technical committee. However, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has yet to appoint the members expected from his side.

Opposition officials now say that 24 hours have passed since they submitted their list, in line with Thursday’s agreement, but no response has come from the president’s office. They also allege that activities aimed at undermining the process are ongoing.

Critics argue that all Hassan Sheikh wanted was to stage a photo session and create the impression that he had brought the parties together. They say he was never genuinely committed to reaching a meaningful agreement on the political stalemate, which risks pushing Mogadishu into another cycle of violence.

The presence of Puntland President Said Deni and Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe in Mogadishu is reportedly placing significant political pressure on Hassan Sheikh.

Some opposition figures believe that allowing the talks to collapse could be a strategy to ease that pressure, as it would likely force both leaders to return to their respective regions.

If that happens, observers warn it could take a very long time to bring all sides back to the negotiating table.

The situation now appears increasingly complicated, with growing pessimism about reaching a resolution to Somalia’s ongoing political transition crisis.

Unless the international community intervenes to mediate between the parties, the prospects for a breakthrough remain very low.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Somalia is facing an increasingly complex crisis, with widespread drought and land grabbing causing large-scale displacement, while deep political disputes persist over the constitution and the electoral process.

Meanwhile, Somaliland has received recognition from the government of Israel becoming the first country to recognside Hargeisa as a sovereign country after more than three decade of waiting. Somalia continues to refuse this move, a development that has further complicated the overall political landscape.

The spokesperson of the Somali Salvation Forum (opposition alliance), Mohamed Mohamud Diriye (Beyle), told Kaab TV that the federal government must present a clear roadmap to save the country and reach a national consensus on elections.

“We are constantly warning and calling for restraint. We are urging President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to come to his senses,” Beyle said.

He stressed that the opposition firmly rejects any election organized unilaterally by the president, describing such a move as illegal.

“It appears to us that the president wants to conduct an election on his own, in which he would be both a contestant and a referee,” Beyle added.

In December, the federal government held a highly disputed election in Mogadishu, which was outright rejected by opposition groups. The process lacked transparency and was also opposed by the Puntland and Jubaland administrations.

Recently, the opposition-led Somali Salvation Forum announced that if no agreement on elections is reached by January 20, 2026, it will launch its own electoral roadmap, which it says is intended to rescue the country from political collapse.

The federal government has since issued a statement inviting opposition leaders to participate in a political dialogue scheduled to take place in Mogadishu.

However, in a statement released on Saturday, the opposition conditioned its participation on several requirements, foremost among them credible security guarantees.

This comes amid an ongoing political standoff between President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the leaders of Puntland and Jubaland. The federal government has also refused to recognize Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Ahmed Madobe) following the regional election held in November 2024.

Beyle told Kaab TV that the opposition is categorically opposed to any attempt by President Hassan Sheikh to extend his term, arguing that he is seeking a two-year extension of his mandate.

There are growing fears that Somalia could slide into political and security instability if an inclusive political settlement is not reached, at a time when the militant group Al-Shabaab is steadily advancing closer to the capital, Mogadishu.

Laasaanod (Kaab TV) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, last night held a meeting in the city of Las Anod with several traditional elders from Puntland who had attended the inauguration ceremony of the North Eastern regional administration.

The delegation of traditional leaders was led by King (Boqor) Burhan Boqor Muse and included Sultan Said Mohamed Garaase, among others. The meeting highlighted the important role of traditional leadership in Somalia’s governance and peacebuilding processes.

According to a statement released by Villa Somalia, the President and the elders discussed key national issues, including the unity of the country, strengthening peace and stability, and enhancing cooperation between federal institutions and regional administrations.

The traditional leaders praised the President for supporting the formation of the North Eastern administration, describing it as a positive step toward inclusive governance and regional development.

The meeting was also attended by senior government officials, including the Minister of Interior, Ali Yusuf Ali (Hosh); the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Farah Nuh; the Commander of the Somali Police Force, General Asad Diyaano; General Jimale Jama Takar; and politician Hassan Shire Abgaal.

This engagement comes at a critical time as the federal government continues efforts to consolidate peace, strengthen state-building initiatives, and foster dialogue with traditional leaders, who remain central to conflict resolution and social cohesion across Somalia.
