Somalia is facing a worsening political and security crisis, with reports of armed clashes and growing tensions emerging from several parts of the country within a matter of days.

In the outskirts of Mogadishu, reports have emerged of fighting and increased military activity.

In Baidoa, heavy fighting was reported on August 17, 2026, between Federal Government forces and fighters loyal to former South West President Abdiasis Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen.

Meanwhile, Galkayo witnessed clashes earlier this month between federal forces and Puntland security forces.

Gedo also remains one of the most sensitive areas in the dispute between the Federal Government and Jubaland.

The political and security confrontation in the region extends beyond Somalia’s borders because of Gedo’s strategic location along the Kenyan and Ethiopian borders.

These developments are unfolding as Somalia remains deeply divided over elections, constitutional reforms, federal power-sharing and the question of who should control forces belonging to the federal member states.

Baidoa Becomes the Latest Flashpoint

Baidoa has emerged as the country’s latest major center of armed confrontation. The fighting came at a particularly sensitive time for a city that hosts hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people, raising fears of a serious humanitarian impact.

Baidoa is not only the temporary administrative capital of South West State. It is also a major transport and commercial center in southern Somalia and hosts a large population of civilians and displaced families who are particularly vulnerable to renewed fighting.

The latest confrontation illustrates how quickly Somalia’s political disputes can turn into armed conflict when disagreements between the Federal Government and regional actors are not resolved through dialogue.

Could Political Disputes Benefit Al-Shabaab?

This creates a dangerous cycle: political disagreements consume government attention and military resources, armed confrontations weaken coordination, and insecurity creates opportunities for Al-Shabaab to expand its operational space.

The fighting in Baidoa, tensions in Galkayo, military activity around Mogadishu and the continuing dispute in Gedo collectively paint a picture of a country facing an increasingly fragile political and security environment.

Baidoa has demonstrated how political disputes can turn into open warfare inside a major city.

Galkayo has highlighted how disagreements over military authority and the powers of the Federal Government can reach strategically important urban centers.

Gedo demonstrates that disputes between Mogadishu and federal member states can also acquire a regional dimension, particularly because Kenya and Ethiopia have direct security interests along Somalia’s borders.

The developments around Mogadishu, meanwhile, serve as a reminder that the capital and its surrounding areas remain highly vulnerable to insecurity.

Somalia now faces an urgent need for a political agreement before another confrontation emerges.

Every political dispute that turns into gunfire ultimately places the greatest burden on civilians, threatening lives, displacing families, disrupting trade and weakening the country’s broader efforts to defeat Al-Shabaab.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has arrived in Galkayo as part of his ongoing tour of central Somalia, where he addressed residents at Abdullahi Isse Stadium and called for unity, reconciliation and peaceful coexistence.

Speaking to residents, Hassan Sheikh praised the people of Galkayo for their commitment to social cohesion and urged them to strengthen peace, cooperation and reconciliation.

He stressed the importance of preventing political differences from dividing communities or undermining stability.

However, the President’s visit has raised strong concerns in Puntland, which considers Galkayo a highly sensitive political and security area. The city is divided between Puntland and Galmudug, with the two administrations controlling different parts of Galkayo.

Puntland authorities had previously warned that Hassan Sheikh’s planned visit to South Galkayo could increase political tensions.

The concerns come amid already strained relations between Puntland and the Federal Government over constitutional changes, elections, federal powers and the distribution of political authority.

Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni has repeatedly emphasized that Puntland will protect its security and administrative authority.

Puntland officials have also warned against actions they believe could undermine the region’s stability or create confrontation between federal and Puntland forces.

However, Puntland critics argue that calls for reconciliation must be matched by political engagement.

Galkayo remains one of Somalia’s most strategically important cities because of its location, commercial activity and position between Puntland and Galmudug.

The immediate concern is therefore whether Hassan Sheikh’s visit will contribute to reconciliation or further deepen the political divide between Mogadishu and Garowe.

While the President says Galkayo should remain a symbol of unity and coexistence, Puntland’s concerns highlight the broader question of who controls security and political affairs in a city divided between two administrations.

Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni arrived in Galkayo early Saturday as military tensions continue to simmer across parts of Mudug.

His visit is expected to focus on assessing the security situation, launching development projects, laying foundations for new projects and overseeing plans to integrate federal-aligned forces into Puntland’s security structure.

During his stay, Deni is expected to meet traditional elders, security officials, Mudug regional authorities and representatives of the local community.

His visit comes after Puntland recently took control of former PSF bases in Galkayo and Bosaso, amid an escalating dispute with federal-aligned forces operating in the region.

Meanwhile, some federal forces that had been stationed in Mudug have reportedly moved toward Galmudug-controlled areas following the Puntland takeover of the PSF facilities.

Puntland’s two-day deadline for federal-aligned forces in its territory to surrender has also expired, while government officials and community leaders in Nugaal, Mudug and Bari are reportedly continuing efforts to prevent further escalation.
