GALKA’YO (Kaab TV) – The Court of First Instance in Puntland’s Mudug region today sentenced Hodan Mohamud Diriye to death after she was found guilty of murdering 14-year-old Sabirin Saylaan, who had been living in her household.

The court’s ruling followed a hearing that lasted several hours and was broadcast live on social media. The court also sentenced Hodan’s 65-year-old husband to one year in prison and a $500 fine after finding him complicit in the crime.

Although Hodan Mohamud told the court she did not kill Sabirin, she admitted to routinely torturing the girl. The court stated that the evidence presented clearly showed she was responsible for the murder.

The defendants were granted one month to file an appeal. The lawyer representing them said he was dissatisfied with the verdict and intends to appeal Hodan’s sentence.

The body of the deceased Sabirin, who has not yet been buried, is expected to be handed over to her relatives this afternoon for burial.

Sabirin’s killing sparked protests in Galkayo that resulted in one death and significant property damage.

Galkayo (KAAB TV) – In an inspiring tale of strength and survival, pregnant Fadumo Abdi Ali walked over 120 kilometers with her husband from a remote village near the Ethiopian border to reach Mudug Regional Hospital in Galkayo, Somalia.

Exhausted and in critical condition, she was immediately attended to by doctors from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), who performed an emergency caesarean section that ultimately saved both her life and that of her newborn baby.

According to medical staff, Fadumo arrived at the hospital after several days of travel on foot and by occasional vehicle rides through harsh, drought-affected terrain.

Upon examination, doctors determined that her life was at serious risk due to complications during labor.

The surgical team acted swiftly, performing the life-saving operation. Fadumo’s baby was delivered safely and is now in stable condition, receiving postnatal care alongside the mother.

The Mudug region, which lies between Puntland and Galmudug, has long suffered from recurrent conflict, prolonged drought, and limited access to healthcare.

Many residents in rural areas have no nearby health facilities and must travel long distances, often on unsafe roads, to reach hospitals in Galkayo.

Many women and children do not make it in time, highlighting the severe shortage of maternal healthcare in central Somalia.

MSF, in collaboration with the Puntland Ministry of Health, continues to provide essential medical services in Galkayo, including emergency obstetric care, maternal and child health programs, treatment for malnutrition, and tuberculosis (TB) services.

These efforts have been crucial in saving countless lives amid worsening humanitarian conditions.

Health needs in Somalia are rising sharply, driven by a combination of food insecurity, climate shocks, and displacement.

According to recent humanitarian assessments, about 3.4 million people across Somalia are currently facing severe food shortages, a number projected to climb to 4.4 million by the end of 2025 if urgent aid is not scaled up.

The ongoing food crisis has also led to a surge in malnutrition among children and pregnant women, increasing pressure on already overstretched health facilities.

Despite these challenges, stories like Fadumo’s stand as a testament to resilience, the dedication of medical workers, and the vital role of humanitarian organizations working to ensure that even the most remote communities have access to life-saving care.

Galkayo (KAAB TV) – A prominent businessman, Siad Ali Hirsi, was shot and killed early this morning by unidentified gunmen in the city of Galkayo, located in the Mudug region of central Somalia.

Siad Ali Hirsi, widely recognized as one of the most influential and respected businessmen in the region, was gunned down in what appears to be a targeted attack. The shooting took place in one of the city’s increasingly volatile neighborhoods, where inter-clan tensions have been on the rise in recent weeks.

Sources indicate that the killing is linked to the ongoing conflict between two rival clans, whose members have been clashing in the Horumar neighborhood. This area was the scene of a violent altercation just days ago, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals. Siad Ali Hirsi was reportedly from one of the communities involved in that confrontation.

During the attack, a woman who happened to be nearby sustained injuries, highlighting the broader risk that civilians face amid the escalating violence. The assailant fled the scene before security forces arrived. Authorities have since launched an investigation, but no arrests have been reported at the time of this publication.

Residents say the situation in North Galkayo has deteriorated significantly, with targeted killings becoming alarmingly common. Members of the Haldoor community, in particular, have increasingly become targets of what appears to be retaliatory clan violence.

The murder of Siad Ali Hirsi comes just days after another high-profile killing in Galkayo: Dr. Omar Abdi Dahir, a well-known medical professional, was fatally shot during clashes last week, underscoring the region’s growing instability.

Despite repeated calls for peace, the Mudug regional administration and local elders, scholars, and intellectuals have so far failed to mediate a sustainable resolution between the rival clans. As a result, the cycle of violence continues unabated, deepening fears among residents and further destabilizing the area.

Many in the community are urging the Somali federal government and international partners to intervene and help facilitate dialogue before the violence spirals further out of control.

Galkayo (KAAB TV) – The city of Galkayo, the capital of the Mudug region and a key urban center straddling the administrative boundaries of Puntland and Galmudug, is witnessing a troubling surge in targeted killings—particularly of individuals with public prominence.

The latest victim is Dr. Omar Abdi Dahir, a young and well-known medical professional, who was tragically murdered last night in what appears to be a premeditated attack. According to multiple local sources, the perpetrators fled the scene before Galkayo’s security forces could respond. Authorities have since launched a formal investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible.

This marks the second killing of a medical doctor in Galkayo in recent times. Both incidents are believed to be linked to ongoing inter-clan rivalries that have historically plagued the region. The city has long been a flashpoint for conflict between fraternal clans, with periodic violence erupting despite repeated peace initiatives and reconciliation efforts.

Security agencies have yet to release any detailed information regarding the suspects or whether any leads have emerged from their investigations. The lack of progress in apprehending the culprits has further heightened public concern about the deteriorating security situation in Galkayo.

As a city jointly administered by Puntland and Galmudug, Galkayo often finds itself caught in the crosshairs of political and clan-based disputes, complicating law enforcement and governance efforts. The recent killings have sparked renewed calls from residents, civil society, and healthcare professionals for increased protection, justice, and a lasting resolution to the underlying tensions that continue to fuel the violence.

Local authorities have pledged to intensify security operations in the area and are urging the public to cooperate with ongoing investigations.

GALKAYO (KAAB TV) – The Somali Military Court on Monday carried out the execution of two convicted members of the Al-Shabaab militant group, following a final ruling that found them guilty of orchestrating a series of targeted killings and ambushes in the Mudug region.

The executed individuals were identified as Anas Abdulqadir Ali Mohamud, also known by the alias “Salman,” and Adan Mursal Mohamed Idow. The executions were conducted in the central city of Galkayo, after the military court sentenced them to death—a sentence that was upheld following the exhaustion of all legal appeals.

According to military officials, the court determined that the two men played leading roles in planning and executing deadly attacks targeting local elders, peace advocates, and prominent figures in the community. These operations, which were part of a broader campaign of violence by Al-Shabaab in the region, aimed to destabilize ongoing reconciliation and peace-building efforts.

“The court found overwhelming and credible evidence that directly linked the convicted individuals to a number of fatal ambushes and bombings, which resulted in the tragic loss of life and the destruction of property,” a statement from the Somali Armed Forces Court read.

Officials also confirmed that both men were active operatives within Al-Shabaab, a group notorious for its use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), assassinations, and hit-and-run tactics. While Al-Shabaab is most active in Somalia, it is also known for conducting operations throughout parts of East Africa and the broader Middle East.

In its official statement, the Somali Armed Forces Court emphasized that the implementation of the death sentences is part of a larger strategy by the Federal Government and the Puntland administration to reinforce the rule of law and deter acts of terrorism.

“This sentence is a clear message to militant groups and their sympathizers that acts of terror will not go unpunished,” the court stated. “It also affirms the government’s commitment to securing justice for victims and restoring peace across Somalia.”

Military authorities also noted an increase in the prosecution and execution of Al-Shabaab members found guilty of high-profile crimes. This trend, they said, is intended to bolster public confidence in Somalia’s judicial system while serving as a deterrent against future attacks.

The executions mark another significant step in Somalia’s ongoing battle against terrorism and underscore the military court’s intensified campaign to deliver justice and ensure national stability in the face of persistent insurgent threats.

GALKAYO, Somalia (Kaab TV) – A new wave of clan-related revenge killings has shaken Galkayo, the divided central Somali city in the Mudug region, prompting local officials, youth groups, and community members to raise alarms over the rising insecurity.

On June 7, gunmen abducted and killed Sa’id Guure Ali Baar, a taxi driver, and his passenger Anab Burhan Mohamed in a brazen daylight attack.

Both were shot at point-blank range, and the perpetrators fled the scene.

Local authorities believe the double murder is part of a retaliatory cycle stemming from earlier inter-clan violence, indicating a resurgence of revenge killings that had long plagued the region.

Anab, a young woman and victim of the attack, was the daughter of Burhan Mohamed Abdi, a well-known journalist and former director of Radio Galkayo.

Her burial took place the following day, with an outpouring of condolences from the public to the grieving family.

In response to the killings, the Galkayo Youth Movement — a civic group recently active in addressing social issues — released a statement on June 10 urging government officials, elders, and the wider public to confront the growing threat of clan-based violence.

“Clan-based divisions are an issue that needs to be addressed collectively, honestly, and with the investment of time, resources, and intellect,” the group said, expressing concern over the increasing recurrence of such attacks.

The youth called on the Puntland authorities, who administer northern Galkayo, to enhance police operations and increase security patrols in vulnerable areas.

Galkayo has historically been a hotspot for clan conflict, but the city has enjoyed over a decade of relative stability following reconciliation efforts. The city is divided between two federal member states: Galmudug governs the southern part, while Puntland controls the north.

Recent skirmishes between members of the Leelkase and Habargidir clans in western Galkayo have sparked fears of renewed instability across the city.

Puntland’s Mudug regional governor, Faisal Sheikh Ali, confirmed that the authorities are actively addressing the escalating situation. Last week, he hosted a meeting focused on curbing clan revenge killings.

The meeting — organized by local youth — brought together religious leaders, businesspeople, and members of the local council to discuss coordinated efforts to restore calm and prevent further bloodshed.
