Former Puntland President and current Somali Senator Abdirahman Sheikh Mohamed Faroole has launched a sharp criticism of Somalia’s Federal Government, accusing the administration led by Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of violating the country’s constitution and undermining the federal system.

Speaking at a gathering of elders and community leaders in Garowe, Faroole argued that there is no longer a legitimate government in Mogadishu, claiming the federal administration has abandoned the constitutional principles upon which Somalia’s governance is based.

“There is no legitimate government in Mogadishu. The other regional administrations have been subdued. Puntland is the only administration that has remained free from federal interference,” Faroole said.

The senator further accused the Federal Government of weakening Somalia’s federal structure by interfering in the affairs of regional states, arguing that Puntland remains the only federal member state that has resisted what he described as political pressure from Mogadishu.

Faroole also appealed to the people of Puntland to remain united and support their regional administration in safeguarding peace, stability, and the region’s autonomy.

“We urge the people of Puntland to continue preserving peace. We want stability, and may God protect us from anyone seeking to bring conflict,” he added.

His remarks came during a meeting of prominent elders from the Nugaal region, where participants discussed the political and security situation in Puntland, efforts to strengthen unity, and the region’s response to the ongoing political tensions between Puntland and Somalia’s Federal Government.

The comments are the latest in a series of public exchanges between Puntland leaders and the Federal Government, reflecting deepening disagreements over constitutional governance, federalism, and the country’s political direction amid continuing efforts to resolve Somalia’s electoral and constitutional disputes through dialogue.
