Farmaajo Warns Somalia Is Entering Dangerous Political and Security Crisis

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has warned that Somalia is entering a dangerous period of political instability and insecurity, accusing the administration of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of failing to reach a political solution to the country’s ongoing disputes.

Speaking about the current situation in Somalia, Farmaajo said the political conflict has moved beyond ordinary political disagreements and has now evolved into a serious security crisis due to the absence of an inclusive and widely accepted electoral agreement.

“A legitimate and inclusive election that could remove uncertainty has not been achieved. When politics fails, it turns into insecurity. That is where the country stands today,” Farmaajo said.

The former president also addressed reports involving General Odawaa Yusuf Rage, warning that attacks or pressure against senior military commanders could weaken the structure, discipline, and unity of Somalia’s armed forces.

“The chain of command disappears, military discipline breaks down, and respect for authority is lost,” Farmaajo stated.

He further warned that if military leaders begin to feel insecure or lose confidence in the system, the cohesion of the armed forces could collapse and lead soldiers to align themselves along clan lines.

“It turns into clan divisions, with every individual returning to his own clan. That is how the military falls apart,” he said.

Farmaajo argued that the current tensions could deepen Somalia’s political instability and pointed to ongoing disputes and strained relations involving Somaliland, Puntland, and Jubbaland as examples of the growing fragmentation within the country.

“The country has entered political turmoil, and our enemies — and anyone pleased to see Somalia weakened — are benefiting from this situation,” he added.

The former president also claimed that Somalia’s deteriorating situation has become a subject of criticism among international leaders. He referenced remarks he said were made by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Somalia’s political and security condition.

“It has even reached a point where Donald Trump is saying Somalia has no president, no government, no army, and no police,” Farmaajo claimed.

Farmaajo concluded his remarks with a warning about the country’s political direction, stressing that Somalia urgently needs a comprehensive political settlement to prevent further instability and major threats to national security and unity.

In a statement released on Monday, Farmaajo said Somalia is facing “serious security challenges,” accusing the current government of failing to adequately address the threat posed by terrorist groups. He warned that divisions within the national army have significantly weakened the country’s defense capabilities.

The former president also expressed concern over the resurgence of clan-based armed conflicts in several regions, describing them as a serious setback to peace and stability.

Farmaajo said Somalia’s governance framework has strayed from the agreed constitutional path, emphasizing that major political decisions must be based on broad national consensus. He cautioned that authoritarian political practices could deepen divisions and undermine ongoing state-building efforts.

On the economic front, Farmaajo highlighted rising inflation and growing public distrust, urging the government to protect vulnerable communities affected by drought and recurring humanitarian crises.

He called on the federal government, federal member states, traditional elders, civil society, and citizens to unite in safeguarding national stability, security, and constitutional order. MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has warned President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of violating the Provisional Constitution and the he dangers of prioritizing interest-based groupings over unity.

In a statement addressing the recent political development in Somalia, Farmaajo who now lives in Doha, Qatar, warned of the dangers of prioritizing interest-based groupings over unity and the public good, stating that such actions could plunge the country into a dangerous situation that threatens its cohesion and stability.

“I warn against the dangers of prioritizing interest-based groupings over unity and the public good, which could plunge the country into a dangerous situation that threatens its cohesion and stability,” Farmaajo wrote.

Farmaajo directly accused President Hassan Sheikh of deliberately violating several constitutional articles — namely Article 87, Article 50, Article 92, and Article 65.

All of these articles, he stated, clearly define the obligations to uphold the constitution and the unity of the country, the role of the National Consultative Council (NCC) in decisions of national importance, the federalization process, and the duties of the parliamentary leadership — including the prohibition against members of parliament being affiliated with political parties or organizations.

“Specifically, I urge the President to reverse the unilateral steps that are currently a source of conflict, including the disregard for the constitution under which he was elected, the formation of laws and electoral committees without consensus, and the dismantling of the National Consultative Council — a move that has created avoidable political divisions,” he said in the statement.
