A Kenyan court has ordered a man to pay a Ksh24 million fine after finding him guilty of trafficking 266.2 kilograms of cannabis in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The accused, Vincent Odhiambo, was also handed a 10-year prison sentence, which will take effect if he fails to pay the fine.

Odhiambo was convicted under Section 4(a)(ii) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Amendment Act, 2022.

According to a statement shared by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on X, prosecutors informed the court that on January 18, 2026, Odhiambo and several accomplices were involved in transporting 266.2 kilograms of cannabis, estimated to be worth Ksh7.986 million.

Investigators said the drugs were being moved in a Toyota Fielder along the Kapchorwa–Torongo murram road in Kamwosor Location, Keiyo South Sub-County, when authorities intercepted the vehicle.

The prosecution team, led by Principal Prosecution Counsel Felix Namasake, presented testimony from six witnesses during the trial.

After reviewing the evidence and witness accounts, the court concluded that the prosecution had proved its case and found Odhiambo guilty of the offence.

While delivering the sentence, the court noted that the large quantity of cannabis involved in the case was a significant aggravating factor.

The judge considered both the defence’s mitigation and the seriousness of the offence before imposing what was described as a punishment intended to discourage similar crimes.
