The national emergency, originally declared on April 12, 2010, under Executive Order 13536, was introduced in response to the deteriorating security situation in Somalia, including persistent violence, piracy off its coast, and violations of a United Nations arms embargo.

Additional measures were later introduced through Executive Order 13620 in 2012, targeting key issues such as the export of charcoal—seen as a major funding source for the militant group al-Shabaab—the misuse of Somali public assets, and violence against civilians.

In the latest extension signed on April 8, President Trump stated that the situation in Somalia continues to pose an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to US national security and foreign policy.

The extension, issued under the National Emergencies Act, keeps existing sanctions and related measures in force until at least April 12, 2027.

President Hassan Sheikh stated that such remarks have no impact on the official relationship between the two countries. He emphasized that although Trump’s comments were discouraging, the relationship between Somalia and the United States remains strong and is based on formal cooperation, continuous dialogue, and shared interests.

“The United States is a major country and a close ally of ours. There is ongoing dialogue, security and economic agreements, and American investment efforts currently underway in Somalia,” President Hassan Sheikh said.

The President noted that the United States plays a significant role in supporting the fight against terrorism, strengthening security institutions, advancing state-building efforts, and implementing development projects across the country.

He stressed that Somalia faces no threat from the United States, but instead maintains close cooperation and partnership with it.

Speaking on the issue of Somaliland and the role of Israel, President Hassan Sheikh clarified that the United States has assured the Federal Government of Somalia that it will not recognize Somaliland and does not support Israel’s actions there. He added that the U.S. does not align itself with Israel’s actions, describing them as unilateral steps taken by Israel.

“The United States has confirmed to us that it does not recognize Somaliland and does not support any actions that undermine Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity,” the President said.

President Hassan Sheikh also stated that the Somali government remains in direct communication with the United States, and that these discussions are ongoing, with a continued focus on preserving bilateral relations and cooperation in the areas of security, economic development, and overall national progress.

Washington (Kaab TV) — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that his administration would pursue efforts to revoke the citizenship of American citizens who were originally immigrants if they are found guilty of fraud-related crimes. In his remarks, the president specifically referenced immigrants “from Somalia or anywhere else,” a statement that has drawn attention and criticism from immigrant advocacy groups.

President Trump made the comments while speaking at an event organized by the Detroit Economic Club, where he addressed economic policy, government spending, and immigration enforcement. He stated that individuals convicted of fraud would face prison sentences and eventual deportation from the United States.

“If you come to the United States to defraud the American people, we will put you in jail, and then we will send you back to where you came from,” Trump said, prompting applause from some members of the audience.

The president’s remarks come as his administration continues to intensify its rhetoric and policy positions regarding alleged corruption and fraud within government-funded social programs.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that certain federal assistance programs—particularly those related to child care support and subsidized food programs—have been exploited through large-scale fraud schemes. During his speech, he specifically mentioned the state of Minnesota, which is home to a significant population of Somali Americans. The Twin Cities metropolitan area, in particular, hosts the largest Somali community in the United States.

Federal and state authorities are currently conducting investigations into these allegations. However, as of now, no comprehensive or conclusive official findings have been released to substantiate the full scope of the claims being made. Despite the ongoing nature of these investigations, the Trump administration has already announced steps to suspend portions of federal funding allocated to child care assistance programs in five states.

The affected states—California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and New York—are all led by Democratic administrations. In response to the funding suspension, these states have filed a lawsuit in federal court, arguing that the administration’s actions violate federal law and exceed executive authority. They contend that the funding cuts would harm vulnerable families and children who rely on these programs for basic support.

Last week, a federal judge issued a temporary order blocking the administration’s decision, allowing the funds to continue while the case proceeds through the courts. The ruling does not resolve the dispute but pauses the enforcement of the funding cuts until a full legal review can be conducted.

President Trump has frequently relied on claims of widespread fraud and criminal activity by immigrants as justification for tightening immigration policies and strengthening enforcement measures. Critics argue that such statements are often based on unproven or exaggerated allegations and unfairly target immigrant communities, contributing to stigma and fear.

Numerous academic studies and law enforcement analyses have found that immigrants, as a group, are generally less likely to commit violent crimes than individuals born in the United States.

The debate over immigration, citizenship, and government accountability continues to be a central and polarizing issue in American politics, with Trump’s latest comments further intensifying national discussion and concern among immigrant communities.

President Trump repeatedly targeted Somali immigrants living in Minnesota, following reports linking some members of that community to a corruption scandal in the state.

Speaking about Ilhan Omar, he said: “She doesn’t do much. She’s always complaining. She came from one of the worst countries in the world,” Trump stated, as the audience responded with applause and laughter.

Trump also said that during his previous presidency he halted travel from countries he described as conflict-ridden and insecure, such as Afghanistan, Haiti, Somalia, and others.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem stated that the administration is planning to expand the travel ban, potentially affecting more than 30 countries, following a recent shooting incident.

During Trump’s previous administration, travel was already banned from 19 countries he labeled as security or public-safety risks. These included: Afghanistan, Burundi, Chad, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Laos, Libya, Myanmar, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Togo, Turkmenistan, Venezuela, and Yemen.

NAIROBI (Kaab TV) — President Donald Trump plunged hundreds of Somali immigrants into a state of acute uncertainty late Friday by declaring an “immediate” end to their Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a humanitarian program shielding them from deportation since 1991.

The abrupt announcement, made on Truth Social, specifically targeted Somalis living in Minnesota, home to the nation’s largest Somali community.

Trump based the termination on unverified claims, asserting that “Somali gangs are terrorizing the people” and that the state is a “hub of fraudulent money laundering activity” with “BILLIONS of Dollars” missing.

The decision has triggered “panic” among Somali-Americans and their allies, despite the fact that only 705 individuals nationwide currently hold TPS status, most of whom reside in Minnesota.

Kaab TV has been informed that several families in Minnesota have expressed concern as some members of their families, not named here, could be affected by the termination.

Community leaders warn that the action, a clear signal of the administration’s hardline immigration stance, will “tear families apart” and send people back to Somalia, a country the U.S. State Department deems unsafe due to terrorism and civil conflict.

“What this new announcements looks like is probably a new wave of legal battles and threat to families who are at risk of tearing them apart,” said Abdirahman Hussein, a Somali-American activist.

Legal experts and Democratic officials immediately challenged the President’s authority, calling the move:

Immigration lawyers argue there is no mechanism for the President to terminate TPS for only one state or to enact the termination immediately.

The current TPS designation for Somalis, extended by the previous administration, is not set to expire until March 17, 2026. Termination requires a formal process and notice period, which is likely to delay any final revocation.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison confirmed his office is “exploring all of our options,” suggesting a legal challenge to the directive is imminent.

Political Backlash

Minnesota’s Democratic leadership denounced the move as a purely political attack:

Governor Tim Walz (D) stated that Trump’s action was meant to “broadly target an entire community” to “change the subject.”

Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) called it “Another late night threat by Donald Trump” and criticized him for “targeting Somalis who have been in our country for years” instead of addressing rising costs.

Furthermore, political strategist Abshir Omar warned that the move could harm the long-term economic and strategic relationship with Somalia, a country that has recently offered the U.S. exclusive control of air bases and ports and expressed interest in oil reserve partnerships.

Despite the limited number of people directly holding TPS, advocates emphasize the decision’s chilling effect on the entire Somali diaspora in the U.S., a community that has spent decades integrating and contributing to American society.

Minnesota is home to the largest concentration of Somalis in the U.S. Most of this population resides in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, with the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis often referred to as “Little Mogadishu” due to its high concentration of Somali-owned businesses and residents.

The community plays a major role in the state’s economy, politics, and culture, with significant purchasing power and hundreds of Somali-owned businesses.

HARGEISA (Kaab TV) – The President of Somaliland has formally nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his recent acknowledgment of the region’s bid for international recognition.

In a speech delivered on Thursday, President Abdirahman Abdillahi Irro, expressed gratitude for Senator Ted Cruz’s support and Representative Scott Perry’s introduction of the Somaliland Recognition Act, both of which have bolstered Somaliland’s aspirations for sovereignty.

“I would like to thank the President of the United States for considering the recognition of the Republic of Somaliland. Today, I hereby declare that, as the President of Somaliland, I join global leaders in nominating President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize,” the Somaliland leader said.

Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of the Somali Democratic Republic.

Since then, it has maintained a separate government, currency, and democratic institutions, operating as a de facto state.

Despite its stability and self-governance, Somaliland’s sovereignty remains unrecognized by the international community.

Recent Developments in U.S. Policy

Last week, U.S President Trump indicated that his administration is “looking into” Somaliland’s case for recognition.

This was after a reporter asked him whether his administration is considering the recognition of Somaliland.

Trump’s statement marks a significant shift from the longstanding U.S. policy of supporting a unified Somalia.

Analysts suggest that the U.S. may be reevaluating its stance to counterbalance China’s growing influence in the Horn of Africa, particularly in Djibouti, where the U.S. maintains a strategic military base.

Somaliland’s port of Berbera has also attracted international attention due to its strategic location.

In the United Kingdom, over 20 Members of Parliament have voiced support for Somaliland’s recognition.

Former MP Gavin Williamson has been a prominent advocate, highlighting Somaliland’s democratic elections and stability.

Additionally, the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Somaliland has published a report urging the UK government to lead efforts in recognizing Somaliland, emphasizing the historical ties between the UK and the region.

Somaliland’s strategic location along key maritime routes and its relative stability in a region marked by conflict have made it an attractive partner for international powers.

The region’s commitment to democratic governance and development further bolsters its case for recognition.

However, the Somali government in Mogadishu has opposed the recognition of Somaliland saying it ‘amounts partitioning’ of Somalia.

“Somaliland has emerged as a critical security and diplomatic partner for the United States…” the letter reads, highlighting the breakaway region’s strategic position along the Gulf of Aden, its contribution to regional counterterrorism and anti-piracy efforts, and its diplomatic engagements—including hosting a Taiwanese representative office in Hargeisa, strengthening ties with Israel, and voicing support for the Abraham Accords.

Cruz warns that Somaliland now confronts growing pressure from adversaries such as the Chinese Communist Party, which he accuses of using with economic and diplomatic coercion to punish Somaliland’s support for Taiwan and alignment with Western interests.

He argues that formal U.S. recognition would enable Somaliland to further enhance military cooperation, deepen trade and economic partnerships, and better serve shared security goals in the Horn of Africa.

Senator Cruz’s letter comes in the midst of growing momentum of pro-Somaliland recognition within the U.S Government. However, this does not mean a policy change yet.

President Trump’s Recent Remarks on Somaliland

President Donald Trump recently ignited debate with a brief comment when asked about Somaliland’s independence and a speculative offer to host displaced Palestinians from Gaza. He responded: “We are looking into that right now. Good question… another very tough one… but we’re working on it. Somaliland.”.

This remark was warmly received in Hargeisa, where Somaliland’s presidency framed it as recognition of their decades-long track record of peace, democracy, and regional stability.

Somaliland, a former British protectorate, declared independence from Somalia in 1991 after the collapse of the Somali central government.

Since then, it has operated with its own democratic institutions, currency, and relative stability, though it remains unrecognised by any UN member state.

Its strategic importance lies in its location along critical maritime routes near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and it houses the deep-water port of Berbera, which has attracted investment from the UAE and interest from Ethiopia for access to the sea.

In 2024, Somaliland held a peaceful presidential election resulting in Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi’s victory.

In late March 2025, Somaliland made offer inviting U.S. access to the Berbera port and airbase.

Earlier this year, a U.S. House committee proposed establishing a representative office in Hargeisa to counter Chinese influence, and funding for democratic development continued.

HARGEISA (Kaab TV) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday hinted at the possibility of recognizing Somaliland’s independence, saying his administration is “looking into” the matter as the self-declared republic offers access to a naval base on the Red Sea.

The comment came during a White House press conference where Trump hosted the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia to sign an agreement aimed at ending decades of conflict.

A reporter asked if the president was inclined to recognize Somaliland’s independence in return for strategic cooperation.

“The country of Somaliland has expressed potential interest if you were to diplomatically recognize their independence. Are you inclined to do so?” the reporter asked.

Trump replied: “We are looking into that right now, good question actually; another complex one as you know, but we are working on that right now. Somaliland.”

His remarks drew swift reactions in both Somaliland and Somalia.

Somaliland’s Foreign Minister Abdirahman Dahir Adam welcomed the statement, writing on X: “Somaliland remains a peaceful, democratic nation committed to lawful, voluntary humanitarian engagement. Our foreign policy respects international norms, and any discussions with partners, including the U.S., will be transparent and uphold our sovereignty and democratic values.”

Adam added that President Abdirahman Abdillahi Irro is expected to visit Washington soon, noting that Somaliland’s parliament is considering a new law for embassies and diplomats “as we are officially in the process of becoming a recognized nation.”

Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991, has remained largely peaceful and has held multiple democratic elections but has yet to gain international recognition.

Since 2012, talks with Somalia — initially brokered by Turkey — have failed to yield results.

Maritime access deal with Ethiopia

In January 2024, Somaliland signed a maritime access deal with neighboring Ethiopia, hoping it would lead to recognition.

The agreement sparked a diplomatic row between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa, stalling progress.

Now, Somaliland is offering the U.S. two key incentives: unchallenged access to a naval base along the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden — a corridor that handles roughly 12% of global trade — as well as access to its mineral resources.

Mariam Wahba, a researcher with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said the timing is significant.

“This campaign [for recognition] is quite different considering who is in the White House this time,” she said. “What we know about Donald Trump’s foreign policy is that it focuses on getting what is best for the American people.”

In Mogadishu, pro-unity analysts downplayed the remarks, arguing they are unlikely to alter U.S. policy toward Somalia.

“It was only enough for them [pro-Somaliland supporters] that Trump mentioned the name of Somaliland. This is not going to bring any change to the status quo,” said Mogadishu resident Hassan Mohamed.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Thousands of internally displaced Somalis living in the Kabaase camp near Doolow are facing an escalating humanitarian crisis, with residents citing extreme food shortages, lack of healthcare, and growing despair due to aid suspensions and worsening security conditions.

The crisis in Kabaase is part of a broader displacement emergency across Somalia.

According to the United Nations, more than 3.8 million people are currently displaced within the country, driven by conflict, drought, and insecurity.

Residents say conditions in the camp have deteriorated further following recent political tensions and international funding cuts.

Aid workers and community leaders report growing concerns over malnutrition, especially among children.

Compounding the crisis is the deteriorating security situation around Doolow. Al-Shabaab militants maintain a presence in surrounding areas, restricting access and undermining the safety of civilians.

With hope diminishing, some displaced families have begun making the risky journey across the border into Ethiopia, seeking refuge in camps like Melkadida.

The residents of Kabaase are now calling on both the Somali government and the international community to restore aid flows and establish long-term resettlement and recovery plans.

NEW YORK, United States (Kaab TV) – President Donald Trump recently blocked an Israeli plan to assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to two U.S. officials who spoke to Reuters on Sunday.

“Have the Iranians killed an American yet? No. Until they do, we’re not even discussing targeting their political leadership,” said a senior U.S. administration official familiar with the matter.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that senior American and Israeli officials have been in constant communication since Israel launched a major military campaign—Operation Rising Lion—aimed at crippling Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

During those discussions, Israeli officials reportedly informed their American counterparts that they had a clear opportunity to eliminate Khamenei, but Trump overruled the plan.

While the sources did not confirm whether Trump personally delivered the message, they noted that he has been in frequent contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

When asked about the Reuters report during an appearance on Fox News Channel’s Special Report with Bret Baier on Sunday, Netanyahu dismissed the story, saying:

“There are so many false reports of conversations that never happened, and I’m not going to get into that.”

He added: “But I can tell you this: we’ll do what we need to do. And I think the United States knows what’s best for the United States.”

Israel–Iran Conflict Intensifies

Since June 13, Israel has conducted massive airstrikes across Tehran and other key Iranian locations, targeting nuclear facilities, missile launchers, the Defense Ministry, and critical energy infrastructure.

The strikes mark the third consecutive day of intense bombardment under Operation Rising Lion.

Iranian officials report at least 224 people killed and 1,481 injured, mostly civilians.

Among the dead are senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commanders, including the IRGC intelligence chief and two high-ranking generals.

In retaliation, Iran has launched multiple waves of ballistic missiles and drones at Israel, including more than 70 overnight strikes.

Some of these breached Israeli air defenses and struck populated areas such as Tel Aviv, Bat Yam, and Haifa.

On the Israeli side, at least 10 to 14 people have been killed, with hundreds injured and extensive damage reported to homes and infrastructure in major cities.

Tel Aviv’s main airport remains closed, further escalating concerns over the widening scope of the conflict.
