MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – The President of the Jubaland Government, Ahmed Mohamed Islam Madobe, has sent a congratulatory message to the newly elected President of the South West State, Abdiasis Hassan Mohamed, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ali Said Fiqi.

In a statement issued by the Jubaland Presidency, President Madobe prayed to Allah to guide the leaders in fulfilling the heavy responsibilities they have undertaken and to serve the people of South West State with efficiency, justice, and progress.

On Saturday, the South West State Parliament re-elected President Abdi Aziz Laftagareen with 66 votes during a session held in Baidoa. Speaker Dr. Ali Said Fiqi and Deputy Shamsa Mohamed Yarrow were also re-elected.

The Federal Government of Somalia, however, rejected the vote, calling it “illegitimate.”

President Laftagareen stated that he will continue to serve his state and protect the interests and security of South West State. Meanwhile, clan militias opposing the election, along with forces loyal to the Somali government, advanced towards Baidoa on Saturday and vowed to attack the town.

The UN Transitional Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) issued a statement warning all parties to seek dialogue and avoid further escalation.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – As political tensions escalate over proposed constitutional amendments, MP Yusuf Gama’diid, Secretary of the Himilo Qaran Party, has alleged that opposition lawmakers have been threatened with death.

Speaking to the media in Mogadishu, Gama’diid said that members of parliament with differing opinions are facing an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.

“Some MPs have been threatened with death. Police officers said to the MPs ‘we were ordered to kill you’,” he stated, highlighting the strong pressure on parliamentarians to take certain positions or remain silent on critical national issues.

The accusation comes after disruptions and confrontations marked the recent sessions of the House of the People, where disagreements arose over how to approach the new constitutional chapters.

Gama’diid did not name specific individuals behind the threats, but his comments paint a picture of insecurity within the country’s legislative center.

The incident raises serious questions about parliamentary immunity and the protection of freedom of expression within Somalia’s parliament, at a time when a sensitive power struggle is unfolding in Mogadishu.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Two flights that were scheduled to bring advance delegations of officials from Puntland and Jubaland to Mogadishu today [Sunday 1 February] were turned back while still in the air, just as they were due to land at Mogadishu airport.

In separate press statements, the administrations of Puntland and Jubaland condemned the decision to turn back the flights that were en route to Mogadishu.

Puntland and Jubaland described today’s incident as “an act that endangered the security of the officials and accompanying officers aboard the two aircraft.”

Jubaland also stated that two additional flights carrying civilians from Kismayo were denied permission to land in Mogadishu and were forced to return to Kismayo.

Speaking about the incident, Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni said that what happened today constitutes “a criminal act” that will be accounted for at the appropriate time.

Meanwhile, Minister of Defence Ahmed Macalin Fiqi accused the leadership of Puntland and Jubaland of attempting to bring large quantities of weapons and an excessive number of troops to Mogadishu airport.

The two regional states rejected the accusation in official statements, saying that the passengers on the turned-back flights included standard presidential security details and staff from the Puntland and Jubaland presidential offices.

Members of the international community expressed concern over the incident, particularly the European Union Ambassador and the United Nations office, who called on Somali parties to urgently resolve the dispute over the arrival of the Puntland and Jubaland delegations and to create an environment conducive to holding the electoral consultation conference.

Today, 1 February, had been scheduled as the date for the Somalia 2026 electoral process conference, which was planned to take place in Mogadishu.

In recent weeks, technical committees from the Federal Government of Somalia and the Somali Salvation Council had been working on preparations for the conference and its agenda.

Today’s incident is widely seen as a new obstacle to the planned meeting, amid growing uncertainty over whether sufficient trust can be rebuilt for Somalia’s rival political actors to come together for dialogue.
