Dar Es Salam (KAAB TV) – Shortly after the Tanzanian parliament approved his nomination as the new Prime Minister, Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba delivered powerful remarks on Thursday, warning civil servants who are not ready to serve citizens with dignity.

Nchemba looked straight at the packed chamber and promised to work “day and night” with President Samia Suluhu Hassan to put jobs in the pockets of ordinary Tanzanians – especially the eight million young people who wake up every morning wondering where their next chance will come from.

The government plans to work with the private sector to create the job opportunities.

He said that he has experienced poverty firsthand, and not just read about it in books.

“I know what it is like,” he said, his voice steady.

“I lived in poverty for 32 years. After university, I carried bricks and mixed cement on construction sites just to eat. My wife was a “mama lishe” at that time,” he said, referring to a role in which women run small food-eatery businesses to earn a living.

He explained how life was when he grew up in the villages – one where, after coming back from the grazing fields, shelter was quite a problem.

Nchemba said they would use animal skins and hides to cover themselves so that rainwater from leaking roofs would not reach them and spoil their sleep.

The MPs leaned forward with some nodding in appreciation of head of government business determined to serve his nation.

Here was a man who had queued for casual labour, not just read reports about it.

Nchemba, 50, takes over from Kassim Majaliwa, who held the post for a decade.

The new PM thanked his predecessor and promised all MPs – the majority from the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) – that the government would always consider their views, including those from minority parties.

To change the lives of citizens who have entrusted them with leadership positions, the Iramba Member of Parliament said that all leaders, elected and appointed, must rise to the occasion.

He warned lazy civil servants, arrogant officers, and anyone taking bribes that that would not happen under his watch.

Nchemba warned them in plain Swahili: “I’ll come with a slasher and cut you out like weeds.”

Tanzania has heard anti-corruption talk before, but this time it came from someone who once earned a daily wage lower than some officials’ tea allowance.

He didn’t forget the little people. Low earners, he said, “deserve respect, not pity.”

He said 8% of Tanzanians live in total poverty, while 26% struggle to make ends meet, but promised that under the stewardship of Dr Hassan, there is an elaborate strategy of 2025 to 2050 to elevate living standards.

Tanzania has a population of about 70 million people, according to worldometers.info website.

He said that when Hassan took over following the death of her predecessor, John Pombe Magufuli, in 2021, she worked so hard to complete the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Dam to stabilise Tanzania’s electricity grid system.

He said Hassan and former Vice-President Philip Mpango worked to ensure that children learning under trees remained a thing of the past and that hospitals were built in the districts to ease access to better healthcare.

Premised on that, he said it was reason enough for Tanzanians to hand Hassan and Vice-President Emmanuel Nchimbi a resounding victory of almost 98% of the votes in the 29 October 2025 general election.

Critics and main opposition parties in Tanzania claim “there was no election”, insisting that Hassan of CCM vied and competed against her own shadow.

Her two main opponents were barred: Tundu Lissu of Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) has been facing treason charges since April 2025, while Luhaga Mpina of ACT-Wazalendo was disqualified on party-membership technicalities, according to Tanzania’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Attorney General.

The 29 October 2025 elections were marred by protests that rocked several parts of the country.

The United Nations Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk earlier this week urged Tanzanian officials to launch an investigation into the cause of the deadly protests and to ensure that victims get justice.

Nchemba, aware of the unrest in the country and the risk of disintegration, has urged Tanzanians to seek God’s guidance and live in harmony.

“Let’s ask God for wisdom,” he urged, “and let peace be our daily bread.”

Nchemba thanked the voters of Iramba who first sent him to parliament, and his family, who “stood by me when I had nothing.”

He said the government would fully support the Speaker of the Thirteenth Parliament, Mussa Azzan Zungu, who was elected to the position on 11 November 2025, taking over from Dr Tulia Ackson. Ackson said she would not defend her position.

Nchemba also sent warm wishes to the President of the semi-autonomous Zanzibar archipelago, Hussein Mwinyi, who was elected on a CCM ticket.

Dar Es Salam (KAAB TV) – Tanzania’s main opposition party CHADEMA on Saturday rejected the results of the national election, calling the vote an “open coup” and refusing to recognize President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s rule.

“The announcement of results is an open coup against the will of Tanzanians who have been denied their democratic right to choose the leader they want,” the party said in a statement on the US social media company X.

The electoral commission declared Hassan the winner of Thursday’s election with 97.66% of the vote, securing more than 31.9 million of the 32.7 million ballots cast. The result extends her presidency for a second term.

CHADEMA was barred from participating in the election in April after missing the deadline to sign the electoral code of conduct. Its chairman, Tundu Lissu, was jailed the same month on treason charges he denies after leading a “no reforms, no election” campaign.

“These results have no validity whatsoever, because the truth is that no election took place in Tanzania. Citizens did not participate in the October 29 election due to the absence of free and fair conditions and the lack of a level political playing field,” the party said.

Hassan said her landslide win reflected the people’s mandate for the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party to deliver on its promises, according to local media.

Congratulating her rivals for “conducting campaigns with civility,” she urged Tanzanians to unite and praised the electoral commission for what she called a “free, open, and fair” vote, The Citizen daily reported.

The polls were marred by reports of violence, opposition boycotts, and widespread internet disruptions.

The UN Human Rights Office said at least 10 people were killed in clashes between security forces and protesters after the results were announced, while CHADEMA claimed the toll was far higher.

Party spokesperson John Kitoka told reporters more than 700 people had been killed since the election period began, accusing authorities of targeting opposition supporters.

Hassan described protests in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mwanza, and Songwe as “neither civil nor patriotic.”

CHADEMA said the nationwide demonstrations were “clear proof that citizens did not participate in what is being called an election and that they do not accept anyone emerging from this flawed electoral process.”

According to the electoral commission, voter turnout was nearly 87%.

The party urged the international community not to recognize Hassan’s presidency, saying “she lacks legitimacy because she has not been elected by the citizens of Tanzania.”

This was Tanzania’s first full national poll under Hassan, 65, who assumed office in 2021 following the death of President John Magufuli.

She has pledged unity and economic stability in her second term, but the scale of her victory and the reported crackdown on dissent have drawn criticism from domestic and international observers who warn of shrinking democratic space in the East African nation.

The African Union and East African Community have called for calm and respect for human rights, urging authorities to ensure transparency and accountability in handling post-election unrest.

Dar Es Salam (KAAB TV) – Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has been declared the winner of the country’s disputed presidential election with nearly 98 percent of the vote, after leading rivals were excluded from the race.

The final result announced by the electoral commission on Saturday showed Hassan had won 97.66 percent of Wednesday’s vote, dominating every constituency.

State media said a swearing-in ceremony would take place later on Saturday.

The election for president and parliament set off days of violent protests as demonstrators took to the streets of major cities to protest against the barring or prevention of Hassan’s main rivals from running and what they described as widespread repression.

Despite a heavy security presence, election day descended into chaos, with some demonstrators tearing down banners of Hassan and setting fire to government buildings, and police firing tear gas and gunshots, according to reports quoting witnesses.

Chadema, the main opposition force which was barred from taking part in the election, told the AFP news agency on Friday that “about 700” people had been killed, based on figures gathered from a network checking hospitals and health clinics.

Meanwhile, the UN human rights office said credible reports indicated at least 10 people were killed in three cities.

Foreign Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo told Al Jazeera on Friday that the authorities have acted appropriately and the election was conducted fairly.

“No excessive force has been used,” he told Al Jazeera, saying the government has “no official figures” on any protesters killed. “I’ve not seen these 700 anywhere.”

Hassan, who in 2021 was elevated from vice president on the sudden death of her predecessor, John Magufuli, faced 16 candidates from smaller parties.

Chadema leader Tundu Lissu has been jailed for months, charged with treason after he called for electoral reforms that he said were a prerequisite for free and fair elections. He denies the charges. Another opposition figure, Luhaga Mpina of the ACT-Wazalendo group, was barred from running.

Rights groups allege Hassan oversaw a “wave of terror” in the country before the vote, including a string of high-profile abductions that escalated in the final days. The government has rejected criticisms of its human rights record.

Hassan has not made any public statement since the unrest began.

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres is “deeply concerned” about the situation in Tanzania, “including reports of deaths and injuries during the demonstrations”, his spokesman said in a statement.

Dar Es Salam (KAAB TV) – Police in Tanzania’s main city of Dar es Salaam fired shots and tear gas on Thursday to disperse protesters who returned to the streets a day after a general election marred by violent demonstrations.

The U.S. embassy said that some major roads, including the main one leading to Dar es Salaam’s international airport, were closed.

Areas of Dar es Salaam and its neighbourhoods most affected by Thursday demonstrations include Mbagala, Gongo la Mboto, and Kiluvya.

On Wednesday as voters went to polling stations to exercise their democratic right, protesters took to the streets of Dar es Salaam and several other cities, infuriated by the exclusion of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s two biggest challengers from the presidential race.

Demonstrators, quoted by various media outlets said they are worried about the future of their nation, that was for decades, an epitome of peace and democracy in Africa.

One protester, in a news prime aired on Kenya’s Citizen TV on Wednesday evening, Wednesday complained about concerted effort to silence government critics.

“Our push for reforms will not end today or tomorrow,” the agitated young man said on camera.

“We shall demonstrate until we see real change.”

Government spokesperson Gerson Msigwa has ordered all civil servants to work from home on Thursday except for those whose duties require them to be present at their workplaces.

The state television channel also announced that students should study from home on Thursday.

Tanzania’s main opposition party, Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) had called for protests during the election, which it said amounted to a “coronation” of Hassan.

CHADEMA was disqualified in April 2025 from the election after it refused to sign a code of conduct from the electoral commission.

Its leader Tundu Lissu was charged with treason for rallying Tanzanians behind the bandwagon of “no reforms, no elections”.

The commission also disqualified Luhaga Joelson Mpina, the candidate for opposition party ACT-Wazalendo, leaving only minor parties to take on Hassan.

Hassan rose to power following the death of John Pombe Magufuli in 2021, and her soft demeanor had plaudits happy that she would ease repression of political opponents and censorship that had increased under her predecessor.

But fast-track to 2025, critics say all the gains made have since vanished, and despite Hassan’s order for an investigation into reports of abductions, no official findings have been made public.

On Wednesday, Deogratias Munishi , who is the International Secretary of CHADEMA , told Citizen TV that Kenyans have been very instrumental championing for pluralism in Tanzania.

“Right now the media in Tanzania has been muzzled, but Kenyans have been vocal across mainstream and social media to call out the Tanzanian government,” he said.

He likened the election in his home country as mere coronation ceremony.

“In an election, voters must be presented with choices, but disqualifying main opponents is like a restaurant serving customers food without any alternative menu,” he said.

Leading media outlets, The Citizen and Mwananchi, have not updated content on their main digital platforms since Wednesday, Dawan Africa can confirm.

Reported widespread internet outage began mid-morning, coinciding with voting hours. Monitoring group NetBlocks confirmed a “significant disruption” affecting major social media and messaging platforms.

Analysts and rights groups accused the government of attempting to stifle information flow and suppress dissent as tensions rose.

“This digital blackout is not a coincidence,” said a Dar es Salaam-based political observer who requested anonymity.

“It is part of a pattern, control the message, control the narrative, and control the people.”

Reuters reported that demonstrators are leveraging technology to mobilise marches as Zello app lets their smartphones function like a walkie-talkie.

Amnesty International said at least two people died on the day of election as human rights groups called for investigations into the use of force. Casualties could be more.

Tito Magoti, an activist, told Reuters that he received reports that five people died, with a diplomatic officer who declined to be named claiming that 10 people had died in Dar es Salaam alone.

Vote counting is underway as results expected within 72 hours, the electoral commission announced.

Tanzanians went to the ballot to also elect local leaders, Members of Parliament (MPs) in the 400-seat parliament and a president and lawmakers in the semi-autonomous Zanzibar archipelago.

Dar es Salaam (KAAB TV) – The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who delivered a speech at the African Energy Conference, spoke about the Somali government’s plan to improve the quality of the country’s energy, which he noted is the basis for the development and modernization of the nation.

In his speech, President Hassan Sheikh mentioned renewable resources in Somalia, such as solar and wind energy, which he believes can be important sources of development of the environment in the future.

“The development that Somalia is looking for requires affordable and accessible energy. Today, half of my people do not have enough electricity,” said President Hassan Sheikh. “To address this, we plan to strengthen investment in the energy sector to enable industrial growth, modernize infrastructure, and enhance public services.”

The President, who was accompanied by the Minister of Energy and Water, Abdillahi Bidhahan Warsame and the Minister of Finance, Bihi Iman Cige, called on international stakeholders to invest in Somalia’s energy projects, describing the country’s energy market as a promising opportunity for potential investors.

The African Energy Summit, which brought together African leaders, concluded with the “Dar es Salaam Declaration.” The statement includes a pledge that 300 million Africans will have access to sufficient electricity by 2030.

This statement indicates the commitment of the African countries to deal with the energy challenges of the continent, and it is considered an important step towards the development of sustainable development in the whole of Africa.
