Somalia could increasingly feel the effects of the growing strategic competition between China and Turkey, particularly in areas such as trade, ports, maritime security, and political influence across the Horn of Africa.

While Beijing and Ankara are not engaged in direct confrontation, both countries are expanding their economic and geopolitical footprints in strategically important regions, including Somalia and the wider Red Sea corridor.

Turkey has become one of Somalia’s closest partners, playing a major role in military training, security cooperation, infrastructure development, and maritime defense.

Ankara’s influence has grown steadily through investments and long-term partnerships with the Somali government.

China, meanwhile, has maintained strong interests in the Horn of Africa through trade, infrastructure projects, and maritime routes linking Asia, Africa, and Europe.

Beijing also maintains a military base in neighboring Djibouti and regularly deploys naval forces in waters near Somalia.

With Somalia occupying a strategic position along major global shipping lanes, analysts say the country could become an arena for increased competition over ports, maritime resources, energy exploration, infrastructure projects, and security partnerships.

The greatest challenge for Mogadishu could emerge if competition between the two powers intensifies to the point where Somalia faces pressure to align with one side.

Such a scenario would place the government in a difficult position given its important relationships with both Ankara and Beijing.

However, the rivalry could also create opportunities. If managed carefully, Somalia could attract greater investment, infrastructure funding, and security support from both countries, boosting economic growth and development.

Experts argue that Somalia’s best option is to maintain a balanced foreign policy that protects national interests while benefiting from partnerships with multiple international actors.

Failure to do so could expose the country to political pressure, economic competition over strategic assets, increased regional tensions, and greater foreign influence in domestic affairs.

As competition among global and regional powers intensifies in the Horn of Africa, Somalia’s ability to navigate these relationships may play a key role in shaping its economic and security future.
