<p data-start="0" data-end="229">MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – The Government of China has announced that it will implement a zero-tariff policy on goods exported to China from 53 African countries with which it maintains diplomatic relations, effective May 1, 2026.</p>
<p data-start="231" data-end="391">Chinese state media reported on Saturday that the measure is part of broader efforts to strengthen economic cooperation between China and the African continent.</p>
<p data-start="393" data-end="600">The state television report also stated that China will continue its efforts to negotiate and sign joint economic cooperation agreements, while expanding market access for African products exported to China.</p>
<p data-start="602" data-end="776">The initiative will be implemented through a modernized framework that includes a system known as a “green channel,” designed to facilitate easier entry into Chinese markets.</p>
<p data-start="778" data-end="1165">China is Africa’s largest trading partner and plays a key role in financing infrastructure projects across the continent, particularly those under the global initiative known as the <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Belt and Road Initiative</span></span>. Through this initiative, China has significantly expanded its influence over the development of ports, roads, railways, and energy projects in many African countries.</p>
<p data-start="1167" data-end="1445">The new zero-tariff policy will apply to all African nations except <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Eswatini</span></span>, the only country on the continent that still maintains diplomatic relations with <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Taiwan</span></span>. China considers Taiwan to be part of its territory.</p>
<p data-start="1447" data-end="1744">In recent years, many African countries have strengthened their trade ties with China and other global powers after U.S. President <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Donald Trump</span></span> imposed heavy tariffs last year on a wide range of imported goods from several countries. That move affected global trade flows.</p>
<p data-start="1746" data-end="2074" data-is-last-node="" data-is-only-node="">Chinese President <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Xi Jinping</span></span> stated that the zero-tariff agreement “will undoubtedly create new development opportunities for Africa.” He made the remarks while African leaders were meeting in <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Addis Ababa</span></span> during the annual summit of the <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">African Union</span></span>.</p>
