MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – The Government of China has announced that it will implement a zero-tariff policy on goods exported to China from 53 African countries with which it maintains diplomatic relations, effective May 1, 2026.

Chinese state media reported on Saturday that the measure is part of broader efforts to strengthen economic cooperation between China and the African continent.

The state television report also stated that China will continue its efforts to negotiate and sign joint economic cooperation agreements, while expanding market access for African products exported to China.

The initiative will be implemented through a modernized framework that includes a system known as a “green channel,” designed to facilitate easier entry into Chinese markets.

China is Africa’s largest trading partner and plays a key role in financing infrastructure projects across the continent, particularly those under the global initiative known as the Belt and Road Initiative. Through this initiative, China has significantly expanded its influence over the development of ports, roads, railways, and energy projects in many African countries.

The new zero-tariff policy will apply to all African nations except Eswatini, the only country on the continent that still maintains diplomatic relations with Taiwan. China considers Taiwan to be part of its territory.

In recent years, many African countries have strengthened their trade ties with China and other global powers after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed heavy tariffs last year on a wide range of imported goods from several countries. That move affected global trade flows.

Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that the zero-tariff agreement “will undoubtedly create new development opportunities for Africa.” He made the remarks while African leaders were meeting in Addis Ababa during the annual summit of the African Union.
