The court’s ruling followed a hearing that lasted several hours and was broadcast live on social media. The court also sentenced Hodan’s 65-year-old husband to one year in prison and a $500 fine after finding him complicit in the crime.

Although Hodan Mohamud told the court she did not kill Sabirin, she admitted to routinely torturing the girl. The court stated that the evidence presented clearly showed she was responsible for the murder.

The defendants were granted one month to file an appeal. The lawyer representing them said he was dissatisfied with the verdict and intends to appeal Hodan’s sentence.

The body of the deceased Sabirin, who has not yet been buried, is expected to be handed over to her relatives this afternoon for burial.

Sabirin’s killing sparked protests in Galkayo that resulted in one death and significant property damage.

The victim, Aasho Ali, had been living in the home of the two suspects at the time of the abuse.

According to a statement issued by the Banadir Regional Police Command, the suspects will be referred to the competent court to face justice for the crimes committed against the young girl who lived in their care.

In a separate development, the Court of First Instance of the Mudug region in Puntland has sentenced Hodan Mohamud Diriye to death after finding her guilty of brutally killing Sabirin Saylaan, a 14-year-old girl who had been living with her.

The young girl who was subjected to a brutal suffering and torture before being killed was found in the house of the suspects where details of torture and abuse was clearly visible such as bruises on her face and body. Also, her hair was forcibly shaved by them.

The Police Command also urged members of the community to report similar cases of abuse so that authorities can respond promptly.

“Somali citizens everywhere are requested to share such information with the security agencies if they come across these acts, so that we can uphold our responsibility to protect Somali children,” the statement from the Banadir Regional Police said.
