The discussions also focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, energy, and infrastructure.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the fifth consultative session aimed at enhancing coordination on peace efforts in Sudan. The two ministers reviewed developments in the Horn of Africa and reiterated their rejection and condemnation of Israel’s recognition of the so-called “Somaliland.”

According to Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both sides emphasized their unwavering support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, rejecting any unilateral actions that could threaten regional stability. They also expressed support for Somalia’s legitimate state institutions and opposed attempts to establish parallel entities that undermine national unity, while dismissing any linkage between this issue and plans to displace the Palestinian people.

During the talks, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s strong backing of Yemen’s unity and territorial integrity, stressing the importance of a political settlement through inclusive Yemeni-Yemeni dialogue. He called for restraint and de-escalation to help restore peace and stability in the country.

Abdelatty welcomed the growing momentum in Egypt-Djibouti relations and highlighted the shared commitment to expanding cooperation across various sectors. He underscored the importance of continued coordination to implement joint projects in energy, infrastructure, and logistics, particularly in light of Egypt’s efforts to boost trade ties following the opening of Banque Misr’s branch in Djibouti.

Both ministers also expressed their eagerness to convene the next session of the Egypt-Djibouti Business Council to increase trade volumes in line with the strategic partnership between the two countries.

The meeting concluded with a joint commitment to ongoing coordination and consultation on regional and international issues, as well as continued support for efforts to enhance peace, security, and stability across Africa, especially in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.

Cairo (KAAB TV) – Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, held a high-level meeting on Saturday with Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), on the sidelines of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) inauguration in Giza.

The discussion centered on Egypt’s upcoming participation in the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and broader efforts to strengthen African-led peacekeeping initiatives.

According to a statement released by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Abdelatty reaffirmed Cairo’s “unwavering commitment to supporting peace, stability, and state-building across the African continent.”

He highlighted the need for sustainable international funding and logistical backing to ensure that AUSSOM can fully implement its mandate and maintain operational effectiveness in Somalia.

“The success of AUSSOM depends not only on the dedication of African states but also on the sustained political and financial support of the international community,” Abdelatty was quoted as saying. He stressed that Egypt’s contribution represents a strategic return to peacekeeping under the African Union framework, aligning with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s broader vision for African security cooperation.

AUSSOM, which officially replaced the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) in August 2024, is mandated to support the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) in consolidating gains made against the Al-Shabaab insurgency, rebuilding state institutions, and preparing for a complete security handover to Somali forces.

The transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM marks a new phase in Somalia’s stabilization process, focusing on capacity-building rather than combat-heavy operations.

Egypt announced earlier this year that it would deploy both military personnel and logistical support units to AUSSOM — its first major AU peacekeeping contribution in more than a decade.

This move signals Cairo’s renewed engagement in regional peace and security, particularly in the Horn of Africa, a region increasingly central to Egypt’s foreign policy and Red Sea security interests.

In September 2025, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud confirmed that Egyptian forces will assume responsibility for Sector Five, which covers parts of the Middle Shabelle region. The Egyptian contingent will take over from Burundian forces scheduled to withdraw by the end of the year.

According to President Mohamud, the Egyptian troops will be deployed between the districts of Balcad and Mahaday, an area that has seen frequent clashes between Somali security forces and Al-Shabaab militants.

He dismissed earlier reports suggesting that Egyptian forces would deploy to the Gedo region near the Ethiopian border — an area already hosting Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) units operating under the AU mission.

Cairo (KAAB TV) – In a landmark event for Egypt’s cultural diplomacy and heritage tourism, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Saturday attended the grand opening ceremony of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), the world’s largest archaeological museum dedicated exclusively to a single civilization.

The inauguration was held at the foot of the Giza Plateau, on the edge of the famed Pyramids of Giza complex.

The ceremony was led by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el‑Sisi and saw participation from delegations from 79 countries, including 39 represented by heads of state, princes or crown-princes, and government chiefs.

Among the highlights was a musical performance staged in one of the open courtyards of the museum, with the iconic pyramids serving as an atmospheric backdrop to the event.

During his visit, President Mohamud is expected to underscore the longstanding historic and cultural ties between Somalia and Egypt, and to emphasize the growing imperative of reinforcing bilateral relations in the fields of cultural heritage, tourism, education and broader diplomatic cooperation.

The vision for the Grand Egyptian Museum traces back to the early 1990s, when then-Culture Minister Farouk Hosni proposed a new open-museum complex that would link the pyramids, the Sphinx and surrounding temples into a unified cultural campus.

The formal laying of the foundation stone took place in 2002 under then-President Hosni Mubarak, with major site preparation beginning in 2005.

Construction experienced delays during the intervening years but was revived in earnest from 2014 onward under President el-Sisi’s oversight.

Between 2017 and 2023 key segments — including exhibition design, digital infrastructure, and support facilities — were completed, paving the way for trial operations beginning in October 2024.

Located just about 2 km from the Giza Pyramids, the museum complex spans approximately 500,000 m² (≈ 5.4 million sq ft) and is widely regarded as the largest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilisation.

Its façade features a dramatic, five-storey glass wall aligned with the height of the Great Pyramid, allowing dramatic views of the plateau beyond.

The museum houses more than 100,000 artifacts spanning from pre-dynastic through Greco-Roman periods of Egyptian history. Among its most prized collections is the complete treasure trove of Tutankhamun — some 5,000 + items — displayed in a dedicated gallery for the first time.

In addition to its galleries, the museum includes a major conservation and restoration centre (one of the largest in the Middle East), dedicated children’s museum and educational spaces, theatres, commercial and hospitality amenities, and outdoor gardens.

The total cost of the project is commonly cited at around US $1 billion, with significant financial backing coming from Japanese ¥ loans (approximately US $800 million) alongside Egyptian government contributions, donations and international partnerships.

Over and above its role as a museum, GEM is a strategic cornerstone in Egypt’s efforts to revitalise its tourism sector, enhance cultural diplomacy, and reaffirm its position as guardian of an ancient civilisation that has lasting global fascination.

Cairo (KAAB TV) – Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki arrived in Cairo on Thursday to begin a five-day official visit to Egypt, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and discussing regional developments in the Horn of Africa.

According to Yemane Gebremeskel, Eritrea’s Minister of Information, President Afwerki and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi held extensive and constructive discussions on a range of political, economic, and security issues.

The talks reportedly focused on enhancing cooperation between the two nations and addressing regional challenges affecting the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.

The meeting between the two leaders comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region, particularly concerning Eritrea’s strained relationship with neighboring Ethiopia.

President Afwerki has been openly critical of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the ruling Prosperity Party, accusing them of policies that threaten regional stability and Eritrea’s national interests.

Egypt and Eritrea share longstanding ties, and their cooperation has often centered on regional security, the management of Red Sea maritime routes, and broader African Union issues.

In his remarks following the talks, President el-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to supporting Eritrea’s sovereignty and independence, while emphasizing Cairo’s interest in promoting peace and stability across the Horn of Africa, including in Somalia, Sudan, and Ethiopia.

Analysts note that this visit could signal a deepening of strategic coordination between Asmara and Cairo, particularly as both nations navigate shifting alliances and security concerns in the Horn of Africa and the Nile Basin region.

President Afwerki is expected to meet with senior Egyptian officials and visit key institutions during his stay.

His visit underscores Eritrea’s ongoing efforts to expand diplomatic engagement and secure stronger partnerships amid evolving regional dynamics.

CAIRO (KAAB TV) – The Egyptian government is finalising plans to deploy military personnel to Somalia as part of the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

A 16-member delegation of officers from the Egyptian Armed Forces arrived in Mogadishu this week to conduct reconnaissance ahead of the deployment.

The mission, created pursuant to a United Nations Security Council authorisation, replaced the earlier African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and is tasked with stabilising Somalia, combating the extremist group al‑Shabaab, and transferring security responsibility to Somali forces.

According to Egyptian officials, deployment preparations have been completed and the troops will join the mission in coordination with the Somali government.

Egypt emphasises that its contribution comes at the request of the Somali government and with the approval of the African Union Peace and Security Council.

The move is being watched closely by Ethiopia, which has long-standing disputes with Egypt, particularly over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and regional influence.

Ethiopia has expressed discomfort at the prospect of Egyptian troops in Somalia.

In September 2025, Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud stated that there would be no “proxy war” in Somalia between Egypt and Ethiopia, noting that their forces will operate hundreds of kilometres apart.

While earlier reports suggested Egypt might commit up to around 10,000 troops, more recent information places its contribution at approximately 1,091 personnel, in line with the AU mission’s total force target of about 11,900.

CAIRO (KAAB TV) – In a major diplomatic breakthrough, Israeli and Hamas negotiators have reportedly reached a preliminary ceasefire agreement following intensive mediation talks held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. The negotiations were facilitated by a coalition of international actors, including the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey.

The ceasefire marks a potential turning point in a devastating two-year conflict that has gripped the Gaza Strip, resulting in widespread destruction, thousands of casualties, and a dire humanitarian crisis.

While details of the accord remain limited, early reports indicate that the agreement includes two key provisions: a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip and a large-scale exchange of prisoners between the two parties.

Details of the Agreement

According to a press statement issued by Hamas, the ceasefire was reached after prolonged and difficult negotiations with the Israeli delegation.

The talks are said to have focused on halting hostilities, easing the blockade on Gaza, and opening corridors for humanitarian aid.

Key components of the preliminary agreement reportedly include:

Full Withdrawal of Israeli Forces: The Israeli military is expected to gradually withdraw from areas it has occupied during the recent escalations in Gaza.

Prisoner Exchange: Both sides have agreed to exchange a significant number of detainees, including Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails and Israeli captives held by Hamas.

Opening Humanitarian Channels: The deal is also said to include provisions for the immediate entry of humanitarian aid and medical supplies into the Gaza Strip.

Continued Dialogue: Both parties have committed to further negotiations aimed at establishing a permanent truce and addressing core issues of the conflict.

Background and Mediation Efforts

The talks in Sharm El-Sheikh were part of a broader diplomatic initiative involving multiple regional and international stakeholders.

The United States, under its current administration, played a significant role in pushing for a ceasefire, with earlier frameworks inspired in part by previous proposals—some of which date back to the Trump administration’s regional plans.

Egypt and Qatar, longstanding intermediaries in Israeli-Palestinian matters, also played key roles in facilitating dialogue.

The recent escalation in Gaza began two years ago and has led to a catastrophic humanitarian situation. While exact casualty figures vary, estimates from humanitarian organizations suggest that tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed or injured during Israeli military operations. The Israeli government, for its part, has reported ongoing rocket attacks from Gaza targeting civilian areas, which it cites as justification for its military campaigns.

Independent verification of casualty figures remains difficult due to restricted access to affected areas and conflicting narratives. However, international observers and human rights groups have repeatedly called for de-escalation and accountability for actions taken by both sides.

A Tentative Step Toward Peace

While the agreement represents a glimmer of hope, observers caution that it is only a first step in what is likely to be a long and complex peace process. Ceasefires between Israel and Hamas have historically been fragile, often collapsing under the weight of political pressures, mutual distrust, and acts of violence.

Nevertheless, the international community has welcomed the development as a critical opening for renewed peace efforts and for addressing the urgent humanitarian needs of the Palestinian population in Gaza.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a brief statement calling on all parties to respect the terms of the ceasefire and to “seize this opportunity to move toward a comprehensive and lasting peace.”

Further talks are expected to continue in the coming weeks, with a focus on solidifying the ceasefire, rebuilding Gaza, and exploring broader solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Cairo (KAAB TV) – The Egyptian government has issued a sharp condemnation of Ethiopia’s official inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), denouncing the move as a unilateral action that violates international law and disregards the rights of downstream nations.

In a formal letter submitted Tuesday to the United Nations Security Council, Egypt expressed its “deep concern and categorical rejection” of Ethiopia’s continued filling and operation of the dam without a legally binding agreement with Egypt and Sudan.

Cairo described the development as a direct threat to the vital water security of over 150 million people in the two countries.

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused Ethiopia of flouting international norms and reneging on previous commitments made during African Union-mediated negotiations.

“Ethiopia’s persistence in moving forward without consensus undermines regional stability and flagrantly violates established principles of international water law,” the Ministry said in a statement.

Egypt reiterated that it will not recognize or accept any outcomes from the GERD project in the absence of a comprehensive and legally binding agreement on the filling and operation of the dam.

Cairo emphasized that it has long opted for diplomacy and negotiation, but warned that its patience should not be mistaken for weakness.

“Egypt has shown restraint and pursued peaceful dialogue in good faith for over a decade, but the continued disregard for our concerns cannot go unanswered,” the statement read. “Ethiopia must not expect Egypt to remain silent while its sovereign rights and the lifeline of its people are threatened.”

Built on the Blue Nile near the Sudanese border, the GERD is Africa’s largest hydroelectric project, estimated to have cost over $4 billion.

The dam’s reservoir has a capacity of 74 billion cubic meters, and Ethiopia has been filling it since 2020—unilaterally and without any formal agreement with the downstream states.

Both Egypt and Sudan have repeatedly warned that Ethiopia’s actions—particularly during periods of drought—could significantly disrupt water flow and have devastating impacts on agriculture, drinking water supplies, and overall national security.

Egypt, which relies on the Nile for over 90% of its freshwater needs, has stressed that it reserves the right to take all necessary measures permitted under international law to safeguard the interests and well-being of its population.

As tensions continue to mount, regional and international observers are urging renewed diplomatic efforts to avert further escalation and to find a mutually acceptable resolution to one of Africa’s most pressing water disputes.

Cairo (KAAB TV) – In a recent exclusive interview, Fahad Yassin Haji Dahir, the former commander of the Somali Intelligence Agency, discussed the relationship between Somaliland and Somalia in the context of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Fahad sharply criticized the UAE government for its involvement with Somaliland’s authorities, claiming that the UAE has become a central figure in the political conflicts between Somali leaders. He cited examples of tensions between leaders such as Hassan Sheikh, Deni, and Ahmed Madobe.

“Ahmed Madobe and Deni do not greet each other, and neither do Hassan and Irro, yet all of them look to Dubai as their center of influence. It is surprising that President Hassan has not addressed the role the UAE has played in Somaliland,” Fahad stated.

Furthermore, Fahad commented on a recent international conference that Somaliland was invited to, noting that President Hassan Sheikh’s seat was instead occupied by President Irro, who represented Somaliland. He expressed frustration with the UAE’s influence, saying, “The UAE’s actions were more significant than those of the Somaliland president, as they placed President Irro in the seat that should have been occupied by Hassan Sheikh.”

Lastly, Fahad reflected on his decision to avoid getting involved in Somali politics, revealing that before entering the political arena, he consulted with Somali scholars, including Sheikh Mustafa Haji Ismail. “He advised me against getting involved in Somali politics at this time, and he was right,” Fahad concluded.
