Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – Operations at the Port of Bosaso completely came to a halt this morning after DP World issued an urgent order affecting all port workers, resulting in no activity taking place at the port today.

Multiple sources we contacted confirmed that DP World ordered all port employees this morning to purchase special uniforms that will be required for work from now on. The cost of this uniform is nearly 100 US dollars. It is worth noting that port laborers (dockworkers) cannot wear helmets, as they are manual carriers who transport goods on their heads.

DP World also issued another new decision today. Previously, port workers used work ID cards that were renewed every six months. However, they were informed today that the card validity has been changed to one year, with a fee of 14 US dollars. This issue had previously sparked protests by port workers opposing the decision.

Meanwhile, there are 14 workers who have already been notified that they will be completely dismissed from their jobs starting at the beginning of the new year, 2026.

The individuals, identified as Maadey Hussein Ibrahim and Hassan Ibrahim Abdirahman, have been transferred to Bosaso city for investigation, according to Puntland military officials.

Meanwhile, Puntland forces are conducting an operation in the Maragade Well area in the Baalle stream, where U.S. forces recently carried out airstrikes targeting ISIS militants.

Puntland counter-terrorism units, working in cooperation with international partners, reportedly killed at least five fleeing ISIS fighters in Barakalash, located within the Al-Miskad mountains.

Over the past few days, both air and ground operations have intensified in the Baalle stream area of Al-Miskad, in what authorities describe as the final phase of efforts to eliminate the remaining ISIS (Daesh) presence in the region.

BOSASO (KAAB TV) – In a significant counter-terrorism operation, the regional forces of Puntland report the capture of a foreign militant, believed to be a Saudi national, in a major operation carried out in the rugged Al Miskaad mountains of the Bari region.

The operation, conducted by the Puntland security services in recent days, followed intelligence that revealed the presence of the foreign militant within the mountainous hideouts long used by the local affiliate of the Islamic State (IS) group.

According to official and media sources, the capture of the Saudi fighter marks a noteworthy blow to the insurgents’ foreign recruitment and operational capacity in the region.

The Al Miskaad mountain range has been a known stronghold for IS-affiliated militants in Somalia for several years, offering remote terrain and natural hideouts. In prior operations, Puntland forces have reported liberating territory, destroying militant infrastructure and capturing foreign IDs and passports.

In the latest manoeuvre, security forces penetrated the insurgents’ encampments, disrupted supply caches, and apprehended one foreign fighter whose documentation indicated Saudi nationality. Media outlets reported the capture of multiple foreign passports and bank cards left behind by militants during the sweep of the area.

A senior officer from Puntland’s counter-terrorism unit said: “We located the individual through intelligence and surveillance of escape routes. His presence underscores the international dimension of the threat.”

While the exact identity and status of the captured Saudi fighter have not been officially confirmed by the federal government, the regional force indicated the detainee is now in custody under Puntland’s security apparatus.

The arrest of a Saudi national points to the continuing flow of foreign Islamist fighters into Somalia and specifically into remote mountain sanctuaries. This complicates the insurgency’s reach and raises concerns about external networks supporting local militants.

The capture builds on recent successes by Puntland forces, who in recent months declared major territorial gains in the Al Miskaad range — including the seizure of strategic hideouts, ammunition caches, and training grounds.

By removing a foreign operative and capturing documentation and financial instruments, the security forces may hamper the militants’ financial flows, recruitment channels and cross-border support.

The operation conveys a clear signal that even remote mountain havens are no longer safe. Puntland authorities emphasise that follow-up operations will continue to root out remaining insurgents.

Despite the success, significant challenges remain. The terrain of the Al Miskaad mountains is extremely rugged, providing natural concealment for militant cells and complicating sustained operations. Analysts note that while many hideouts have been cleared, remnants of the group may still operate in fragmented fashion.

While Puntland’s regional authorities lead the effort, coordination with the federal government of Somalia and international partners is vital to ensure that militants cannot relocate or regenerate. Efforts to stabilise the liberated areas—clear unexploded ordnance, restore infrastructure, and build community trust—will be essential to prevent a resurgence.

In Bosaso, Puntland’s commercial hub nearby, business and civic groups welcomed the operation, saying it contributes to the security environment necessary for trade and economic activity. “We have been under threat from taxation and extortion by militants moving out of the mountains,” said one local trader.

Regional experts say that the Horn of Africa remains a frontline in the global fight against IS-linked groups, and the capture is likely to draw attention from international counter-terrorism trackers monitoring foreign fighter flows.

Puntland authorities say they will continue with a “mopping-up phase” aimed at dismantling the remaining networks of the IS-Somalia affiliate, particularly in remote valleys and mountain ridges in Bari region.

Monitoring of border crossings, especially with Ethiopia and Somaliland, will be intensified to cut off infiltration and supply routes.

The identity of the Saudi detainee, his role within the militant structure and any links to international cells are expected to be the subject of investigation.

The information he may provide could yield further intelligence on how foreign fighters are being deployed in the region.

Bosaso (KAAB TV) – At Bosaso Airport in Somalia’s Puntland state, the thunderous sound of large aircraft hitting the tarmac echoes out across the port city.

Minutes after landing, the aircraft can be identified. It is a white IL-76 heavy cargo transport plane, and it is parking next to a very similar aircraft.

For local residents, the sound of such planes was unusual two years ago, when they first began landing in Bosaso. Not anymore. Moments later, undisclosed heavy logistical materials are seen being offloaded from the aircraft.

“They’re frequent and the logistics are transferred immediately to another aircraft that is on standby and is destined for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan through the neighbouring countries,” said Abdullahi, a senior Puntland Maritime Police Force (PMPF) commander at Bosaso Airport, who spoke to Middle East Eye using a different name for security reasons.

According to flight tracking data, satellite imagery, multiple local sources, and US and regional diplomats, the origin of these planes and their cargo is clear: the United Arab Emirates.

The destination, as Abdullahi said, is Sudan and the RSF, which this week has captured el-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, after over 500 days of siege.

The paramilitary’s fighters have committed terrible atrocities in the wake of their triumph, filming themselves massacring fleeing civilians and carrying out mass executions at hospitals.

Over a period of months, a pattern could be seen in the cargo aircraft tracked by MEE coming into Bosaso.

The planes would not remain long at the airport and would arrive during periods of minimal activity at the airport.

Publicly available air traffic data shows that the UAE increasingly uses Bosaso Airport as the arrival times of the aircraft are sometimes changed.

“During loading and offloading, they are heavily guarded, as they carry sensitive materials and logistics that are not publicly disclosed,” Abdullahi said. Supplies also come into the port at Bosaso.

Bosaso (KAAB TV) – The Mayor of Bosaso District, Dr. Abdirahman Abdullahi Ali, has issued a strong and unequivocal warning to individuals suspected of providing any form of support—logistical, financial, or material—to members of the Daesh (ISIS) terrorist group currently engaged in armed conflict with Puntland security forces in the Bari region of northeastern Somalia.

Speaking during a high-level security meeting convened in Bosaso, Mayor Abdirahman emphasized that the local administration will take firm legal action against anyone found to be aiding the militant group, particularly those supplying food, fuel, or other logistical materials.

“We are sending a clear and uncompromising message: Anyone found delivering supplies or assistance to the Daesh militants will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the Mayor stated. “These individuals are not just committing a crime—they are endangering the lives of innocent people and undermining national security.”

The mayor noted that the ongoing military campaign known as Operation Hilaac has significantly weakened Daesh’s operational capacity in the region.

As a result, the group has been largely cut off from its previous channels of external support and is now relying on local collaborators to survive.

Dr. Abdirahman specifically appealed to traditional elders, religious leaders, and community representatives in the Bari region to work closely with security forces by identifying and reporting anyone suspected of harboring or assisting the terrorists.

“We call on all community leaders, elders, and residents in the affected areas to stand with the government and security forces.

Your role in identifying and reporting those who assist these militants is crucial to achieving lasting peace and stability,” he said.

Local reports confirm that Puntland’s security forces have already arrested multiple individuals believed to have provided logistical support to Daesh operatives hiding in the mountainous areas of Bari, a region that has long served as a hideout for the extremist group.

Investigations into these cases are ongoing, and further arrests are expected as intelligence operations continue.

The Puntland regional government has intensified its counter-terrorism efforts in recent months, with military operations escalating in remote and rugged terrains where Daesh cells are believed to be entrenched.

Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to continuing these operations until all militant networks in the region are dismantled.

Security analysts have praised the effectiveness of Operation Hilaac, noting that the crackdown has significantly disrupted Daesh’s supply lines and weakened its ability to carry out attacks in the region.

However, officials stress that the cooperation of local communities remains essential to fully eradicating the group’s influence.

Bosaso (KAAB TV) – In a high-level diplomatic and military visit to Bosaso, U.S. Ambassador to Somalia Larry André, AFRICOM Commander Major General Claude Tudor, and Colonel Benander, Commander of Special Operations Forces in East Africa, met with Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni to express appreciation for Puntland’s efforts in combatting terrorism and ensuring maritime security.

During the meeting, the American delegation commended Puntland’s significant contributions to the fight against ISIS (Daesh), particularly in the northeastern mountainous regions where terrorist activity has been concentrated.

The U.S. officials emphasized that the threat of terrorism extends beyond Somalia’s borders, posing a danger to regional stability and international security, including that of the United States.

A press release issued by the Puntland Presidency highlighted that discussions during the visit covered a broad range of topics, including national security, political developments, and socio-economic progress across Somalia.

The two sides reaffirmed their mutual commitment to continued cooperation in the fight against extremist groups.

The U.S. delegation also oversaw a joint training session between American Special Operations Forces and Puntland’s elite “Lightning” unit, which is actively engaged in anti-terror operations in the Cal Miskaad mountain range — a known stronghold for militant groups.

This diplomatic engagement comes in the wake of a recent U.S. airstrike in the Sanaag region, which reportedly killed Abdullahi Omar Abdi, a local figure accused of arms trafficking for terrorist organizations.

While the U.S. military stated that the strike targeted a legitimate threat, no detailed evidence has been publicly released. The incident sparked protests in the region, with residents condemning the killing of the traditional leader and demanding transparency.

It remains unclear whether the controversial airstrike was addressed during the meeting between Puntland and U.S. officials. However, the timing of the visit suggests that regional tensions and the need for improved coordination may have been part of the private discussions.

This visit underscores the strategic importance of Puntland in the broader context of U.S. counterterrorism operations in East Africa and reflects a growing partnership between American forces and local Somali administrations.

BOSASO (KAAB TV) – The United States has launched a series of nighttime airstrikes targeting Islamic State (ISIS) bases in the rugged Balacade Valley of northeastern Somalia, as fierce ground clashes continue between Puntland regional forces and the militant group entrenched in the Calmikaad mountains.

According to local security officials, the coordinated air campaign began late Saturday afternoon and extended into the early hours of Sunday morning. The strikes focused on the Maragade area, a well-fortified ISIS stronghold characterized by mountainous terrain, concealed trenches, and natural defenses that have historically made it difficult for ground forces to penetrate.

Residents in parts of Bosaso, a major port city in the Bari region, reported hearing loud explosions throughout the night, further confirming the scale and intensity of the operation.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, were also deployed in targeted strikes on suspected ISIS-linked locations near the Biyo Kulule area. These actions were reportedly coordinated with intelligence gathered from Puntland military commanders, who have increased their presence and reconnaissance activities in the region over recent weeks.

The clashes come on the heels of intense ground fighting on Friday, during which Puntland forces suffered multiple casualties. Following the engagement, regional military leaders have temporarily suspended their on-the-ground operations as they assess the damage inflicted by the U.S. air campaign and recalibrate their strategy.

Efforts to clear the mountainous region remain hindered by both the difficult terrain and the strategic positioning of the militant fighters. ISIS has long used the natural features of the Calmikaad mountains to entrench itself, making eradication efforts particularly challenging.

This latest escalation represents one of the most significant confrontations between Puntland’s regional forces and ISIS militants in recent months. The Puntland administration has ramped up military efforts in an attempt to fully dismantle the group’s presence in northeastern Somalia—a region that has seen growing instability due to extremist insurgency.

Military officials have stated that further joint operations with international partners are being considered as part of a broader counterterrorism campaign aimed at restoring security and weakening the operational capabilities of ISIS in the Horn of Africa.

Bosaso (KAAB TV) – The Puntland regional government has officially announced its decision to transfer custody of the MV Sea World and an accompanying military vessel to the Turkish government. The vessels, which were seized off the coast of Bareda in the Ras Asair region, are scheduled to be handed over on June 18.

This decision was finalized following a high-level meeting in Bosaso between the President of Puntland, Said Abdullahi Deni, and a delegation from the Turkish government led by Turkey’s Ambassador to Somalia.

According to an official statement released by the Puntland administration, the Turkish government presented compelling documentation and evidence confirming ownership of both the MV Sea World and the military equipment on board. Puntland authorities conducted a detailed investigation, which corroborated Turkey’s claims.

“Based on the evidence submitted by the Turkish Government and the investigation carried out regarding the vessel and its cargo, the Puntland administration has resolved that full responsibility and ownership of the MV Sea World and the assets on board shall be transferred to the Turkish Government,” the statement read.

The MV Sea World had been under Puntland’s control for 17 days after it was intercepted in Somali waters. The vessel was reportedly transporting military personnel and equipment destined for Mogadishu, raising immediate concerns and confusion over its intentions and authorization.

The incident drew sharp criticism from the Federal Government of Somalia, which characterized the vessel’s seizure as an unlawful act and described it as “a case of kidnapping.” Somali federal authorities demanded the Puntland government release the ship without delay, further straining the often-tense relationship between Mogadishu and the semi-autonomous Puntland region.

In a related development, Puntland officials also noted they were pursuing legal action against TURKSOM, the private security or logistics entity allegedly connected to the vessel. However, details regarding TURKSOM’s role and the legal basis for the charges have not been publicly disclosed.

The handover is expected to ease diplomatic tensions between the parties involved and may serve as a test case for future cooperation—or conflict—between regional and federal Somali authorities and their international partners.

BOSASO (KAAB TV) – The Puntland regional counterterrorism centre today confirmed that Operation Lightning is entering its final phase, as ISIS‑Somalia militants continue to suffer major defeats across the rugged Cal‑Miskaad mountains in Puntland’s Bari region.

Regional forces recently uncovered a terrorist training cave between Lugta Garared and Sul Sul, seizing Arabic‑language training materials and the identity card of a Tanzanian terrorist. According to Puntland officials, these discoveries reflect a broader dismantling of ISIS infrastructure in the area.

Elsewhere, troops intercepted a food-supply vehicle near Bosaso en route to militant positions, arresting two men and disrupting the group’s logistics.

Persistent Territorial Gains

Since the start of the offensive:

In January 2025, security forces destroyed dozens of ISIS bases, downed multiple explosive-equipped drones, and retook strategic wells and villages across the Cal‑Miskaad terrain.

In February, coordinated ground and aerial operations by Puntland forces, with support from the UAE and United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), resulted in more than 100 militants killed in combined engagements. At least 85 militants died in two days of fighting, while drone strikes targeted senior leadership in cave complexes near Bosaso.

A late May to early June push killed over 35 ISIS fighters, decimated weapon and supply caches, and liberated the longstanding command center in Miraale Valley—a key stronghold of the insurgent group.

Foreign Fighter Recruitment Disrupted

Captured documents and equipment highlight ISIS-Somalia’s reliance on foreign recruits, including nationals from East Africa and Maghreb nations. This discovery reinforces the transnational nature of the terror group, which has attempted to establish a foothold in Puntland’s mountainous hideouts.

Local and International Support

Though Puntland has largely conducted the campaign independently of Mogadishu, the operation has benefited from airstrike assistance from the UAE and AFRICOM, which helped eliminate key targets and facilitate ground advances. Local communities have also provided valuable intelligence support, aiding in the targeting of militant positions.

With estimates suggesting that 98% of Cal‑Miskaad has now been retaken, Puntland authorities assert that remainder pockets of ISIS are being flushed out. The regional government has launched the final clearance phase to hunt down any remaining militants or fleeing leadership figures.

Bosaso (KAAB TV) — Political tensions are running high along the coast of Puntland following the controversial seizure of a cargo ship by the Puntland regional administration. The vessel, named Sea World, sails under the Comoros flag and is reportedly owned by the Turkish government. The ship was intercepted and detained by Puntland authorities on July 18.

According to Puntland officials, the ship was apprehended due to concerns about the legitimacy and intended recipients of its military cargo. The Sea World, originally built in 1977 with a capacity of up to 13,000 tons, had allegedly been anchored in an unusual location off the Puntland coast for two days, raising suspicions. Based on intelligence reports suggesting the presence of unauthorized military equipment, Puntland authorities towed the vessel to port for further investigation.

On July 23, nearly a week after the incident, the Federal Government of Somalia issued its first public statement condemning Puntland’s actions. Labeling the seizure an “illegal attack,” the federal government described the incident as a hostage situation and demanded the “unconditional” release of both the ship and its cargo.

The Federal Government clarified that the military equipment on board the ship was legally sanctioned and intended for the TURKSOM military training center in Mogadishu — a facility jointly operated with Turkish forces. The government also revealed that the ship carried commercial goods belonging to Somali businessmen, further asserting that Puntland’s actions were unjustified.

However, Puntland has continued to defend its position, maintaining that the seizure was conducted within legal and security frameworks. On July 24, Puntland released a new statement emphasizing that the contents of the ship “raise serious doubts” about the actual ownership and final destination of the cargo. Social media images showing military vehicles and weapons aboard the Sea World have added to the controversy.

Further complicating the matter, Puntland authorities claimed that some of the weapons on board may have been stolen after the ship was docked, with reports indicating that civilians had gained access to light firearms, including pistols and small arms. These claims have not yet been independently verified.

“The Puntland government is actively investigating both the origin and the intended use of the weapons to ensure that no military equipment falls into the hands of groups or individuals who could threaten Somalia’s peace and stability,” a Puntland spokesperson said.

This unfolding incident has exacerbated the already strained relationship between Puntland and the Federal Government. Political analysts suggest that the situation reflects deeper political disagreements and mistrust between the two sides, potentially signaling broader implications for Somalia’s fragile federal structure and national security cooperation.

As investigations continue, calls for transparency, lawful resolution, and cooperative dialogue between Puntland and Mogadishu are growing — though a swift resolution remains uncertain.
