Heavy fighting has been reported in the Basra area of Lower Shabelle region in recent days as Somali government forces and Al-Shabaab militants clash during ongoing military operations aimed at weakening the group’s presence near the capital, Mogadishu.

The battles took place in Basra and surrounding areas, where government troops have been conducting security and counterinsurgency operations against Al-Shabaab.

Local sources said both sides exchanged heavy gunfire and used a range of weapons during the confrontations as they sought to secure control of strategically important positions in and around the area.

According to Somalia’s Ministry of Defense, government forces carried out a military operation on the outskirts of Basra that resulted in the deaths of several Al-Shabaab members.

The ministry stated that two senior Al-Shabaab figures were among those killed during the operation, describing the mission as part of broader efforts to dismantle the group’s leadership and operational networks.

However, independent verification of the reported casualties has not yet been possible, and no official figures have been released regarding the total number of people killed or wounded during the latest fighting.

Reports from the area have also varied regarding the security situation and the extent of control exercised by the opposing sides in locations surrounding Basra.

Basra remains one of the most strategically significant areas in Lower Shabelle due to its proximity to Mogadishu.

The area has long been a focal point of military activity because it serves as an important corridor linking rural militant-held territories to areas closer to the capital.

Security developments in Basra are therefore closely watched by both government officials and residents concerned about the threat of militant attacks.

The area has witnessed repeated clashes over the years, with Al-Shabaab frequently attempting to use the surrounding terrain to launch attacks, stage ambushes, and move fighters between different parts of Lower Shabelle.

Somali security forces have conducted numerous operations there in an effort to deny the group safe havens and strengthen security around Mogadishu.

The latest fighting comes as the Federal Government of Somalia continues a nationwide military campaign against Al-Shabaab across several regions in southern and central Somalia.

Supported by local forces and international partners, Somali troops have been carrying out ground offensives, intelligence-led operations, and targeted airstrikes aimed at reducing the group’s operational capabilities.

Despite sustained military pressure, Al-Shabaab continues to maintain a presence in parts of rural Somalia and regularly launches attacks against government forces, military installations, and civilian targets.

Analysts say clashes in areas such as Basra underscore the group’s continuing ability to challenge government forces, particularly in strategically important regions near major population centers.

Military officials have not yet provided a comprehensive assessment of the latest operation, but the Ministry of Defense has indicated that efforts to clear militant elements from Basra and surrounding villages will continue as part of the broader campaign to improve security and expand government control across the region.

Fresh fighting broke out between Somali government forces and Al-Shabaab militants in the Basra area of Lower Shabelle region, highlighting the continuing security challenges facing the country despite ongoing military operations against the armed group.

According to local sources, the clash began shortly after the Asr prayer on Saturday and lasted for nearly 20 minutes. Residents reported that the fighting resulted in casualties, including deaths and injuries among the opposing sides.

Reports from the area indicate that at least five people from the warring parties were killed during the confrontation, although the casualty figures have not been independently verified and no official death toll has been released by authorities.

Sources familiar with the incident said the fighting started after officers from Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) launched an operation against an Al-Shabaab position located near government military bases in the area.

Following the operation, government forces reportedly withdrew from the targeted location, after which Al-Shabaab fighters attempted to attack nearby government positions.

Government troops are said to have repelled the assault, triggering a brief but intense exchange of fire.

Military officials later claimed that Al-Shabaab suffered significant losses during the fighting, but did not provide detailed information regarding the number of casualties.

Separately, Somalia’s elite Haramcad Police Unit announced that a military operation along the Shabelle River, particularly in the Baldooska and Alifoow areas, resulted in the killing of Abdinasir Farey, whom the force described as a senior Al-Shabaab leader, along with several of his bodyguards.

Al-Shabaab has not commented on the claim.

Basra and surrounding areas have witnessed repeated military operations against Al-Shabaab in recent years due to their strategic location in Lower Shabelle, a region that has long served as one of the group’s strongholds near the capital, Mogadishu.

In 2022, Somali government forces announced the recapture of several areas in Lower Shabelle from Al-Shabaab during a major offensive.

Those operations came at a heavy cost. Among those killed was General Farhan Mohamud Adan “Qaroole,” the commander of the Haramcad unit, along with several other senior officers accompanying him during combat operations in the region.

The latest clashes come as Somali government forces, supported by local fighters and international partners, continue military campaigns against Al-Shabaab across parts of southern and central Somalia.

The government has intensified efforts to weaken the group’s operational capabilities, although Al-Shabaab continues to launch attacks and maintain a presence in several rural areas despite sustained military pressure.
