Reports indicate that an IED detonated as the deputy commissioner, along with his security team and other officials, were returning from an inspection at the airport in Balad-Hawo district.

The bomb initially caused injuries to the deputy commissioner, who later succumbed to his wounds.

Witnesses stated that the bomb went off on the roadside as the convoy of officials passed the road between the town and the airport construction site.

Abdifatah Noor Matan succumbed to his injuries and passed away after being transported to a hospital in Mogadishu.

No one has officially claimed responsibility for the attack, although such attacks targeting authorities have previously been claimed by the Al-Shabaab group.
