Puntland has intensified its security posture by deploying additional forces to the Mudug region and restructuring the leadership of a key Darawiish military unit, while simultaneously issuing an ultimatum ordering federal government-aligned security forces in Bosaso to surrender.

According to an official directive issued by the Puntland Darawiish Forces Command on July 22, 2026, the regional administration appointed new commanders to lead the Gadaale Unit of the 60th Division in Mudug as part of a broader military reorganization.

Under the new appointments, Major Mohamed Ali Adan was named Commander of the Gadaale Unit, while First Lieutenant Ahmed Qorane Mahmoud was appointed Deputy Commander (Chief of Staff).

The Puntland Darawiish Forces Command instructed all military departments to cooperate fully with the newly appointed officers in carrying out their responsibilities.

The directive was signed by Brigadier General Adan Abdi Hashi, Commander of the Puntland Darawiish Forces.

The military reshuffle comes as Puntland continues to reinforce its presence in Mudug amid heightened security concerns and increasing tensions with Somalia’s Federal Government.

The developments coincide with a new security order issued by Puntland authorities directing federal government-aligned security forces operating in the commercial port city of Bosaso to surrender immediately.

The ultimatum follows recent fighting in the Laag area outside Bosaso, where Puntland officials said regional forces overran positions held by Puntland Security Force (PSF) units aligned with the Federal Government after intense clashes.

Regional authorities said the operation resulted in the capture of 30 PSF personnel and the seizure of 13 gun-mounted technical military vehicles.

Officials also stated that several of the captured fighters were injured during the clashes, although those claims have not been independently verified.

Puntland has warned that any remaining federal-aligned forces operating outside the authority of the regional administration must surrender or face similar military action.

The latest developments underscore the deepening security and political tensions between Puntland and Mogadishu, raising concerns that the long-running dispute between the two sides could escalate further if a political solution is not reached.
