The latest clashes reportedly began inside the town, where Oromo fighters were said to have positioned themselves on top of buildings and used the elevated locations to fire at Somali residents.

Somali residents were reportedly continuing to defend themselves as violence spread through the area.

The fighting has forced many residents to flee their homes, with some crossing the border into Kenya in search of safety.

The displacement has raised concerns about civilian protection and the potential for the violence to affect communities on both sides of the frontier.

Moyale is a strategically important cross-border trading hub connecting southern Ethiopia with northern Kenya. Its location makes stability in the town important for local communities, commercial activity and movement between the two countries.

At the time of the report, neither Ethiopia’s federal government nor the Somali regional administration had issued a public statement on the clashes.

The number of casualties, the full scale of the displacement and the circumstances that triggered the latest fighting remained unclear.
