Al-Shabaab Carries Out Attack in Mandera County

Suspected Al-Shabaab militants launched coordinated attacks on the towns of Arabia and Fino in Kenya’s Mandera County, leaving an infant injured, local security officials said.

Authorities said security forces responded to the attacks and immediately launched a manhunt for the assailants, who are believed to be members of the Somalia-based militant group Al-Shabaab.

According to security officials, the attackers were about 10 in number. An intensive search operation is underway to track them down, with officials expressing confidence that the suspects will be unable to cross into Somalia due to the heavy deployment of security forces along the border.

Residents said the attack occurred around sunset as many people were preparing for the Maghrib prayer. Authorities have urged members of the public to report any information that could help identify or locate the attackers.

The incident comes just a week after Kenya reinforced security along its border with Somalia by deploying additional troops to prevent cross-border infiltration by Al-Shabaab, following a series of attacks in the border region.

MANDERA (Kaab TV) – Kenyan security forces have launched a manhunt for suspected Al-Shabaab militants following an attack on a military camp in Lafey District, Mandera County, near the Kenya-Somalia border.

According to Kenyan security officials, special counterterrorism units are conducting operations across Mandera in an effort to track down the attackers responsible for the assault on the military installation.

Military sources said the militants targeted a camp occupied by Kenyan security personnel, leaving at least three soldiers injured during the attack.

Authorities have not disclosed the full extent of the damage caused by the assault, but security operations have been intensified throughout the region as forces search for those involved.

Kenyan officials said they are focusing their efforts on areas bordering Somalia, where Al-Shabaab fighters have previously crossed into Kenyan territory. Security agencies also allege that the group has recruited some local residents in border communities to support its activities.

The latest operation underscores Kenya’s continued efforts to combat Al-Shabaab, which has carried out numerous attacks in northeastern Kenya and along the porous border with Somalia over the past decade.

Mandera County remains one of the areas most vulnerable to cross-border militant activity due to its proximity to Somalia and the presence of longstanding security challenges in the region.

UN Report: Al-Shabaab Remains the Top Security Threat in Somalia and the Horn of Africa

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – Experts from the United Nations have stated that the Al-Shabaab group remains the greatest threat to peace and stability in Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa region, particularly Kenya.

The experts emphasized that despite ongoing efforts by the Somali government forces and international partners to combat the Al-Qaeda-linked group, Al-Shabaab still has the capacity to carry out complex, well-planned attacks inside Somalia.

They noted that the threat posed by Al-Shabaab is not limited to direct attacks, such as attempted assassinations of senior government officials, but also extends to widespread networks involving extortion, forced recruitment, and well-organized propaganda used to spread the group’s ideology.

In light of these security challenges, the United Nations Security Council voted to extend the mandate of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia until 31 December 2026. The force consists of more than 11,000 personnel, including 680 police officers.

Meanwhile, the experts warned that Al-Shabaab poses a serious threat to Kenya, pointing out that the group carries out attacks ranging from improvised explosive device (IED) bombings to kidnappings.

On average, Al-Shabaab carries out nearly six attacks per month in Kenya, most of which occur in the Mandera and Lamu regions.

Finally, the report stated that Al-Shabaab’s primary objective is to overthrow the Federal Government of Somalia and expel foreign forces supporting the government.
