Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – Commander of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), Gen. Dagvin Anderson, has begun the first leg of a series of high-level visits to Africa, with stops in Ethiopia and in Somalia’s member states of Somaliland and Puntland.

During the visit, Gen. Anderson met with Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Field Marshal Birhanu to discuss the growing threat posed by ISIS and al-Shabaab.

He later traveled to Somaliland to meet with President Cirro and General Osman, including a visit to New Berbera Port to assess its capacity.

In Puntland, he met with Vice President Ilyas and General Ayden, praising their ongoing maximum-pressure campaign against ISIS in the Golis Mountains and emphasizing the need to intensify operations.

Gen. Anderson emphasized that AFRICOM continues to provide unique capabilities and specialized resources that only the United States can offer—supporting partners, countering terrorist influence, and defending the U.S. homeland.

In a statement on Monday, AFRICOM said Gen. Anderson’s message underscores that the United States supports “maximum pressure” on ISIS, al-Shabaab, and other violent extremist organizations.

The trip aligned with President Trump’s priorities and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s guidance is part of a renewed push to reinforce Washington’s commitment to counterterrorism operations across the continent, with an emphasis on protecting the U.S. homeland.

“The whole reason I came here is because we have shared threats,” Anderson said. “I’m not new to this region; I understand what the issues are, and we’re here to help empower our African partners to address these threats in a united way,” the statement reads.

AFRICOM concluded that Africa remains a theater on which the U.S. cannot afford to lose focus a complex and evolving environment where security challenges extend beyond the continent, shaping European and global stability, including the security of the United States.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – A Somali clan militia has claimed that 12 of its fighters were killed in an airstrike on Sunday, May 18, in the central region of the country.

The strike reportedly occurred near Moqokori, about 230 kilometers north of Mogadishu.

According to Abdi Hassan, a commander with the Hiiraan-based Ma’awisley militia, the strike hit a group of their fighters who were aligned with government forces in the fight against al-Shabaab.

“Twelve of our men were killed when the airstrike—likely carried out by a drone—hit our position,” he said.

The area has seen a surge in fighting between clan militias and al-Shabaab militants in recent weeks.

However, the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) issued a statement on Wednesday (21 May) confirming an airstrike in the region but said it targeted al-Shabaab militants, not allied local forces.

The strike was carried out on May 17 near Mabaax, roughly 200 kilometers north of Mogadishu.

“Al-Shabaab has proven its intent and capability to attack U.S. forces,” AFRICOM stated. “AFRICOM, alongside the Federal Government of Somalia and Somali Armed Forces, continues to take action to degrade al-Shabaab’s ability to plan and conduct attacks that threaten the U.S. homeland, our forces, and our citizens abroad.”

AFRICOM did not disclose details about casualties or the type of drone used, citing operational security.

Somali federal officials have not issued any statement regarding the reported deaths of the 12 militia members or the conflicting accounts surrounding the strike.

GAROWE (Kaab TV) – Puntland forces involved in the counter-terrorism operation in the Cal Miskaad mountains entered the Miiraale Valley on Friday.

According to the operation’s commanders, Miiraale Valley, located in the Cal Miskaad range, was believed to be a key hiding area for ISIS Somalia militants, who have been fiercely resisting the advancing forces.

In a brief statement, Puntland forces reported that they cleared the valley’s caves of the militants who had been hiding there.

This marks the third phase of the ongoing military offensive.

The operation against the ISIS-affiliated group began in December 2024, and Puntland authorities say that most of the mountainous areas have now been cleared of the group’s presence.

The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has supported the operation with aerial strikes targeting ISIS hideouts, while the United Arab Emirates contributed equipment and financial aid.

Kenya and Ethiopia have also provided support to the campaign.

ISIS Somalia is believed to have its main base in the Cal Miskaad and Cal Madow mountain ranges in the Bari region.

Meanwhile, Al-Shabaab, linked to the Al-Qaeda network, also maintains strongholds in Cal Madow and the Golis mountains.

Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni announced in December that once the Cal Miskaad operation concludes, troops will advance into the Cal Madow mountains to clear out remaining extremist elements.

The midnight strike targeted the Kunle area of Al-Miskaad.

“The command’s initial assessment is that the strike killed two ISIS terrorists and no civilians were harmed,” AFRICOM stated.

The operation resulted in the deaths of at least two members of the IS-Somalia group.

The airstrike comes as Puntland security forces have been engaged in intense fighting with ISIS-Somalia militants in the mountainous region since December.

Puntland forces have reportedly driven the militants out of 70% of the area.

The United Arab Emirates has also been providing support to Puntland’s regional forces, including airstrikes and logistical assistance.

AFRICOM emphasized its commitment to ongoing operations against the group.

“Degrading ISIS and other terrorist organizations’ ability to plot and conduct attacks that threaten the U.S. homeland, our partners, and civilians” remains a key objective, the command said.

HARGEISA (KAAB TV) – The Somaliland official has announced their willingness to allow the United States to establish a military base in the strategic coastal city of Berbera, as part of an effort to strengthen ties with Washington.

Bashir Good, Somaliland’s representative to the U.S., confirmed that the administration is open to hosting a U.S. military presence in Berbera, seeing it as a move that would benefit both Somaliland and the United States.

“Somaliland is prepared to provide a military base to the United States if it aligns with the mutual interests of both parties,” said Bashir Good.

Berbera, located on the Gulf of Aden, holds a key position on international maritime routes. Its proximity to the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, a vital shipping route connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, makes it a highly strategic location for military and commercial interests.

The city has long been central to Somaliland’s economic and security considerations.

In May 2022, a U.S. AFRICOM military plane was seen at Berbera Airport during a visit by AFRICOM officials, highlighting the growing military interest in the region.

Somaliland’s efforts to solidify its international standing include a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ethiopia, granting the landlocked nation access to the Red Sea via Berbera.

This agreement is seen as a potential pathway for Somaliland to gain international recognition in exchange for facilitating Ethiopia’s maritime access.

In addition, Somaliland has an existing agreement with the UAE’s Dubai Ports World to manage and develop the Berbera Port, a deal that has included provisions for a military base.

The UAE has already established a military presence in the region, further cementing Berbera’s strategic significance.

Bashir Good also reiterated Somaliland’s broader ambitions, emphasizing the region’s commitment to building diplomatic and cooperative relations with the U.S. and other nations as an independent state.

Despite these efforts, Somaliland continues to pursue international recognition as a sovereign state independent from Somalia. However, no country has officially recognized Somaliland’s independence to date.
