MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – The United States government has, for the first time, disclosed painful figures showing that 8,000 soldiers from the African Union forces have been killed or wounded during the 18-year conflict in Somalia.

Washington cited these shocking numbers to support its firm call for the development of a “realistic” strategy for the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country.

During a sensitive United Nations Security Council meeting to renew the mandate of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), the U.S. Representative for UN Management and Reform, Jeffrey Bartos, broke with traditional diplomatic caution by publicly presenting the official casualty figures suffered by troop-contributing countries.

“We acknowledge and remain mindful that 8,000 African soldiers have lost their lives or been wounded in the line of duty over the past 18 years,” Bartos said.

He stressed that despite the enormous human cost and the expenditure of billions of dollars, the transfer of security responsibilities to Somali forces still appears “elusive” and highly complex.

Although Washington supported the extension of the mission’s mandate, it signaled that its backing would not be indefinite.

Bartos explicitly called for the mission to adopt a credible and reliable “end-state” roadmap, marking the clearest indication yet that the United States wants to see an eventual conclusion to the decades-long operation.

The ambassador noted that the U.S. has provided nearly $1.6 billion in direct support to troop-contributing countries, in addition to another $2 billion in assessed contributions channeled through the UN Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS).

He argued for continued “efficient use of resources” and the establishment of clear performance benchmarks going forward.

The United States also sharply criticized Somalia’s internal political divisions, urging the Federal Government, Federal Member States, and clans to “unite” in order to address the country’s security challenges.

“The responsibility for fighting Al-Shabaab and ISIS must shift to those most directly concerned—Somalis themselves,” Bartos said, sending a direct message to Somali leaders to resolve the political disputes that have undermined military progress.

The U.S. expressed frustration that some Security Council members had used the mandate renewal process to introduce what it described as “distracting and divisive language, including on gender issues,” insisting that the focus should remain solely on concrete security outcomes.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (Kaab TV) – The African Union (AU) has expressed deep concern over the potential negative impact of a newly announced travel ban by U.S. President Donald Trump, which targets 19 countries — including several in Africa.

In a statement issued today, the African Union Commission said it has “taken note” of the latest proclamation by the U.S. government that reinstates and expands travel restrictions on nationals from multiple countries, including Somalia, Libya, Eritrea, Sudan, and others on the continent.

Trump’s new ban, announced on Wednesday, revives a signature policy from his first term and takes effect at 12:01 a.m. on Monday.

It places a full travel ban on citizens from 12 countries: Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

An additional seven countries — Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela — will face enhanced screening and visa restrictions.

Trump defended the policy by citing “deficient vetting systems,” high visa overstay rates, and limited cooperation from some governments on deportation matters.

While acknowledging “the sovereign right of all nations to protect their borders and ensure the security of their citizens,” the AU Commission called on the United States to exercise such rights “in a manner that is balanced, evidence-based, and reflective of the long-standing partnership between the United States and Africa.”

The AU warned that the travel restrictions could undermine people-to-people ties, educational exchange, commercial engagement, and broader diplomatic relations that have been “carefully nurtured over decades.”

“The African Union and the United States share mutual interests in promoting peace, prosperity, and global cooperation,” the Commission stated. “We respectfully call upon the U.S. Administration to consider adopting a more consultative approach and to engage in constructive dialogue with the countries concerned.”

The Commission also urged transparent communication and collaboration to address any underlying issues that may have informed the U.S. decision.

Finally, the AU reaffirmed its readiness to support efforts that promote understanding, resolve concerns, and strengthen cooperation between Africa and the United States.

NAIROBI (Kaab TV) — The ALPS group — a coalition comprising the governments of the United States, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, along with the African Union and the United Nations — has strongly condemned a deadly attack on a United Nations humanitarian convoy in Sudan that left five aid workers dead and destroyed critical life-saving supplies.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families, colleagues, and communities of those who were killed while working to assist others in desperate need,” the coalition said in a joint statement.

The attack occurred on Monday night near the town of El Koma in North Darfur province, as the convoy was en route to the city of El Fasher.

The United Nations confirmed the deaths and the destruction of several aid trucks.

According to UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, the convoy — a joint operation by the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF — consisted of 15 trucks and had traveled more than 1,800 kilometers from Port Sudan, carrying vital nutrition and food supplies.

“This horrendous act of violence is devastating,” Dujarric told reporters at a press briefing in New York on Tuesday.

“Multiple trucks were burned, and critical humanitarian supplies were destroyed. This was the first UN humanitarian convoy that was going to make it to El Fasher in over a year.”

The UN said negotiations were underway with local authorities to ensure safe passage to El Fasher when the attack occurred.

The perpetrators of the assault remain unidentified, and Sudan’s rival factions are trading blame.

The ALPS coalition emphasized that attacks on civilians, aid workers, and humanitarian assets constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law.

“We urgently reiterate the need for full respect of international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians and humanitarian personnel,” the statement read. “We call on all parties to allow and facilitate unhindered humanitarian access to people in need.”

Sudan has been engulfed in a brutal civil war since April 2023, when conflict broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The war has displaced millions and has been marked by widespread atrocities, including ethnic violence and mass sexual violence, particularly in Darfur.

The humanitarian crisis continues to worsen, with large parts of the population now dependent on aid for survival.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – The Al-Shabaab militant group on Monday seized control of Xawaadley village, located northeast of the Somali capital Mogadishu, hours after African Union forces withdrew from the area due to severe flooding, residents and officials confirmed.

The village, situated in the Middle Shabelle region, is of strategic importance as it lies along the corridor between Mogadishu and Jowhar.

It had served as a Forward Operating Base (FOB) for the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), as well as a key defensive position for the Somali National Army (SNA) to prevent militant advances toward the capital and the state capital of Hirshabelle.

Local residents said heavily armed Al-Shabaab fighters entered the village Monday afternoon, hours after Burundian troops under AUSSOM withdrew due to rising floodwaters.

In a statement, AUSSOM confirmed the evacuation:

“Burundian troops stationed at Xawaadley Forward Operating Base, northeast of the capital, Mogadishu, have been safely evacuated due to heavy flooding in the area.”

The mission further disclosed that one of the helicopters involved in the evacuation experienced a technical malfunction but was able to land safely without incident.

“All troops and crew have been successfully evacuated to the nearest military base, and no casualties have been reported,” the statement added.

Kareem Adebayo, the Acting Special Representative of the African Union Commission Chairperson (SRCC) for Somalia said the Burundian soldiers were swiftly evaluated.

“We commend the swift action of the AUSSOM Burundian troops during the delicate operation and reaffirm our continued support to the people and the Federal Government of Somalia in mitigating the effects of the flooding.”

Following the troop withdrawal, Al-Shabaab militants reportedly took control of both the AU and Somali military installations in Xawaadley.

The takeover has caused panic in nearby Jowhar town — the administrative capital of Hirshabelle State — with sources telling Kaab TV that Hirshabelle President Ali Abdullahi Hussein has recently vacated the presidential palace in Jowhar due to security concerns and is currently in Mogadishu.

With Jowhar located just 90 kilometers from the capital, the fall of Xawaadley raises alarm over the potential disruption of civilian and commercial movement along the vital Mogadishu–Jowhar route.

Residents report that Al-Shabaab fighters have already begun setting up roadblocks and patrolling surrounding rural areas.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa, Mikhail Bogdanov, arrived in Mogadishu on Sunday, where he met with Somali government officials, including President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

While the details of the discussions remain undisclosed, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Foreign Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi hosted a luncheon in honor of the Russian delegation.

Sources at Villa Somalia told our reporter that Bogdanov personally delivered an invitation from President Vladimir Putin to President Mohamud to attend the upcoming Russia-Arab League summit later this year.

Bogdanov, a veteran diplomat with decades of experience across the Middle East and Africa, is regarded as one of President Putin’s most trusted envoys and has been honored with a presidential medal for his service.

Russia’s diplomatic push in Somalia comes as Moscow seeks to forge new alliances amid its ongoing war in Ukraine, now entering its third year. Although Somalia initially condemned Russia’s invasion, Mogadishu has recently softened its stance, with Somali officials making quiet visits to Moscow.

Amidst the African Union’s funding challenges for its operations in #Somalia and the Somali government’s ongoing struggle against the al-Shabaab terror group, there has been a notable increase in #Russian and #Iranian diplomatic activity in #Mogadishu.

The shift in Somalia’s diplomatic posture occurs at a time when the country faces serious internal challenges, including the rapid advance of militant groups toward Mogadishu.

Meanwhile, uncertainty looms over the future of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), as the United States — the mission’s largest financial backer — hesitates to commit further funding.

Deputy Foreign Minister Isaac Mursal stated that Somalia is eager to deepen cooperation with Russia in key sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and trade.

Russia’s outreach to Somalia is part of its broader effort to expand its influence in strategically important parts of Africa.

At the same time, Iran has reportedly been engaging Somali federal officials through Chinese intermediaries, according to diplomatic sources.

These contacts have remained largely secret, especially amid heightened tensions following U.S. airstrikes against the Iran-backed Houthi militia in Yemen.

Intelligence reports suggest that the Houthis have been using Mogadishu’s seaport to smuggle illicit arms to various Somali militia groups and have developed ties with the al-Shabaab militant group.

JOWHAR (Kaab TV) – Burundian troops stationed in key areas on the outskirts of Jowhar have withdrawn, leaving the city in a state of heightened security concern.

The Burundian forces, part of the African Union Mission (AU mission), were based in Garsaale — a strategically important area for the protection of Jowhar’s airport.

Their unexpected withdrawal has reportedly taken local authorities by surprise.

Officials from Hirshabelle’s Ministry of Security told Kaab TV that they were not informed in advance about the Burundian troops’ departure.

These forces also vacated another post near the city that was vital to maintaining general security in Jowhar.

Burundi had earlier announced plans to pull its troops from Somalia, citing dissatisfaction with how troop quotas for the new AUSSOM (African Union Support Mission in Somalia) 2025 operation were allocated — an initiative that has yet to receive funding.

Meanwhile, Al-Shabaab militants have recently intensified their activities in parts of Middle Shabelle, seizing areas like Masaajid Cali Guduud, Al-Kowthar, and Aadan Yabaal.

The group has also disrupted transport routes between Jowhar and Mogadishu, entering Balcad district — just 30 km from Mogadishu — in late March.

The troop withdrawal has alarmed residents of Jowhar, who fear for their safety now that key defensive positions around the city are unguarded.

Jowhar serves as the administrative capital of the Hirshabelle State.

So far, Hirshabelle authorities have not announced any plan to secure the vacated positions formerly held by the Burundian forces.

This prompted Odinga to withdraw from the race, allowing Youssouf to secure the required two-thirds majority.

Out of AU’s 49 voting member states, two abstained in the final round, with one consistently abstaining throughout the secret ballot.

With this victory, Youssouf takes over as the new head of the AU Commission, steering the continental body through its next term.

Mogadishu – On behalf of the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), I wish to extend warm New Year wishes for 2025 to the Federal Government of Somalia and its people.

2024 marked a pivotal year for Somalia, characterised by significant strides in peace and security, thanks to the concerted efforts of the Federal Government of Somalia, led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, in collaboration with the African Union Mission.

Firstly, Somalia will join the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member in January 2025, following its successful election. This marks a momentous achievement in the country’s recent history and provides an opportunity for Somalia to contribute to global peace and security.

Secondly, Somalia continued the path to economic revitalisation. In March 2024, the country became a full member of the East African Community (EAC), a regional trading bloc with a market size of over 170 million people. Somalia, boasting the longest coastline in Africa at over 3,000 kilometres and rich natural resources, is strategically positioned to emerge as a key player within the economic bloc.

In 2024, the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), the predecessor of AUSSOM, made significant strides by transferring Forward Operating Bases to the Somali Security Forces (SSF), in line with the Somalia Transition Plan. This shows that the Somali Security Forces have acquired the necessary expertise to independently take over the country’s security responsibilities.

We commend international partners and ATMIS Troop and Police Contributing Countries (T/PCCs) for their support and sacrifice on this journey to empower Somali Security Forces through initiatives focused on force generation and capacity building.

In collaboration with development partners, ATMIS initiated a range of quick-impact projects, including construction of boreholes, classrooms, police stations, and rehabilitation of health centres, to improve the lives of residents in liberated areas.

AUSSOM has finally become operational, beginning 1st January 2025, as per UN Security Council Resolution 2767 (2024). It will build on the achievements made under ATMIS to ensure Somalia realizes long-term peace and security.

At the African Union level, we will continue our engagements under AUSSOM, guided by the AU Peace and Security Council communiqués, as well as UN Security Council resolutions. We will also continue our operational support to the SSF as we look forward to a productive year ahead. On behalf of the AU Mission, I wish to affirm our commitment to the Federal Government of Somalia’s stabilisation efforts and post-conflict recovery.

Happy New Year!

Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – The United Nations Security Council has authorized a new African Union mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) aimed at combating the spread of terrorist groups, including Al-Shabaab.

The new mission will also play a critical role in ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid across the country.

The draft resolution for AUSSOM was tabled by the United Kingdom, which acts as the penholder for Somalia at the UN Security Council.

The resolution, adopted on Friday, allows for the deployment of up to 12,626 personnel to assist in counter-terrorism operations and stabilize the Horn of Africa nation.

AUSSOM is set to replace the existing African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which evolved from AMISOM after its initial deployment in 2007.

Somalia is still deciding which countries will contribute troops to the new mission.

Tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia over access to the Red Sea have added complexity to these discussions.

Ethiopian forces are reportedly excluded from the mission, with reports suggesting Egypt, a regional rival of Ethiopia, has announced plans to participate in AUSSOM, which is set to launch in January 2025.

Somali National Security Adviser Hussein Sheikh Ali addressed the issue, stating, “Somalia is actively engaging with the AU and potential troop-contributing countries (TCCs) for AUSSOM.

The mandate of AUSSOM allows the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) to determine TCC participation.

A decision will be announced soon, aligning with our national priorities. The spirit of the Ankara Declaration remains strong and alive.”

The Ankara Declaration, signed earlier this month in Turkey, marked a step toward easing tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia.

Relations between the two nations were strained after Addis Ababa signed a memorandum of understanding with Somaliland earlier this year to access the Red Sea, an agreement Mogadishu deemed a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty.

Turkey, with strong ties to both countries, facilitated the agreement.

Meanwhile, local skepticism about AUSSOM remains high. Many Somalis doubt the effectiveness of ATMIS and fear the new mission may face similar challenges, including divisions between the Federal Government in Mogadishu and regional states.

These internal conflicts could hinder the mission’s operations and further complicate the country’s fragile security situation.

The international community is hopeful that AUSSOM will bolster efforts to combat terrorism and support Somalia’s stabilization, but success will depend on overcoming both local and regional challenges.
