Addis Ababa (Kaab TV) – The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, held a special meeting today in Addis Ababa with the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed.

The meeting focused on bilateral relations between the two countries, particularly their cooperation in the areas of security, economic development, and politics.

“Today, I held a bilateral meeting with the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh, and we discussed strengthening the relations we share,” said Abiy Ahmed.

President Hassan Sheikh is in Addis Ababa to attend the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union.

In recent hours, the President has also held separate meetings with several African leaders, expressing his gratitude for their role in supporting and safeguarding Somalia’s unity.

]]> ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (Kaab TV) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali on Tuesday presented the federal government’s six-month performance report for the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year during the 10th Regular Session of the House of Peoples’ Representatives, outlining progress, challenges, and key national priorities.

Addressing lawmakers, Abiy said Ethiopia’s ongoing peace challenges stem from a continued reliance on force, political betrayal, and fears surrounding the country’s economic and social transformation.

He stressed that the people of Tigray seek peace and development and must become full participants in Ethiopia’s political process.

On the disputed Wolkait area, the prime minister said no further displacement should occur, displaced residents must be allowed to return to their homes, and local communities should be given the right to determine their own future.

Democracy, Dialogue, and Regional Affairs

Abiy reaffirmed the government’s commitment to holding peaceful, fair, and inclusive elections, stating that the next parliament is expected to reflect Ethiopia’s diversity.

He said the National Dialogue process remains the preferred approach for resolving long-standing political disputes.

Turning to foreign affairs, Abiy described the Horn of Africa as deeply interconnected but fragile, citing regional rivalries, external interference, and shared water resources as key challenges.

He said Ethiopia continues to pursue regional diplomatic efforts aimed at promoting stability and cooperation.

Sea Access Remarks

Speaking on Ethiopia’s long-standing ambition to access the sea, Abiy said regional challenges should be addressed through dialogue and cooperation. He argued that Ethiopia’s need for sea access is a matter of natural justice.

“Regarding the Red Sea, my position is very clear,” Abiy told parliament. “Ethiopia needs access to the sea. Those who argue that Ethiopia does not need or does not deserve sea access are violating a natural law.”

He compared Ethiopia’s relationship with the Red Sea to a natural and enduring bond, drawing loud applause from lawmakers.

Abiy noted that the distance from Mogadishu in Somalia to Massawa in Eritrea spans about 5,000 kilometers of coastline, which he said is sufficient for the populations living along it.

He added that Somalia, with a population of about 20 million, and Djibouti, with fewer than one million people, both have extensive coastlines, while Ethiopia, with more than 120 million people, remains landlocked and seeks a modest stretch of coastline.

“If this is not justice, then there is no justice in the world,” he said.

Economic Performance and Digital Expansion

Abiy reported that Ethiopia’s macroeconomic reform agenda remains focused on stabilization, diversified growth, and debt reduction.

Abiy said economic growth is projected at 10.2 percent, in line with International Monetary Fund estimates, noting that Ethiopia continues to grow without oil resources.

Highlighting progress in connectivity and digital services, Abiy said Ethiopian Airlines transported 10.7 million passengers in six months.

Mobile subscriptions reached more than 97 million, while mobile money users rose to 58 million.

He added that 5G internet services are expected to launch in 30 cities and that Ethiopia is establishing what he described as the world’s second artificial intelligence university.

The Prime Minister said the expansion of mobile connectivity has contributed to economic empowerment across the country.

Production, Revenue, and Investment

In the production and trade sectors, the government recorded the harvest of 999 million quintals of crops over six months.

Manufacturing capacity utilization reached 66.3 percent, while import substitution saved USD 3.4 billion. Merchandise exports generated USD 5.1 billion during the same period.

According to the report, the government collected 709 billion birr in revenue and attracted USD 2.3 billion in foreign direct investment over six months.

Abiy said no new commercial dollar-denominated loans have been taken since the reform program began.

Mining, Housing, and GERD

Mining revenue increased by 30 percent, with iron production rising by 36 percent and cement production by 28 percent, reflecting continued housing development and urban expansion.

On the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Abiy reiterated that the project was completed without foreign aid or loans, saying it was fully financed by Ethiopians as a national endeavor.

Although both leaders attended COP30, there has been no confirmation of an official bilateral meeting between the two prime ministers beyond these brief exchanges.

The UK has expressed interest in supporting Ethiopia’s reform agenda, institutional development, and regional security efforts, and such engagements are seen as important in bolstering the relationship between the two nations.

In recent years, however, the UK has raised significant concerns regarding human rights abuses, political repression, and the humanitarian consequences of armed conflict—particularly in relation to the Tigray crisis.

While the UK has historically been a major development partner, political tensions have strained relations, prompting London to call for improved humanitarian access and accountability.

Despite these challenges, diplomatic efforts have continued. Notably, the first Ethiopia–UK political dialogue in March 2025 sought to stabilize relations by focusing on areas of shared interest.

Climate change remains a major issue for Ethiopia. Rising temperatures, more frequent and severe droughts and floods, and increasingly unpredictable rainy seasons continue to pose serious threats.

These impacts undermine agriculture, water resources, and public health—fueling food insecurity, damaging infrastructure, and displacing communities. Additional climate-related challenges, such as soil erosion and pest infestations, further exacerbate vulnerabilities.

The cumulative effects of climate change are a key driver of persistent food insecurity, affecting millions of Ethiopians and deepening cycles of poverty.

]]> HARGEISA (Kaab TV) – Somaliland President Abdirahman Abdillahi Irro is set to travel to Addis Ababa in the coming days for high-level talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, with the controversial Red Sea Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) topping the agenda.

According to sources within the Somaliland presidency, President Irro is seeking a “first-hand discussion” with PM Abiy on the MoU signed on 1 January 2024 between Ethiopia and Somaliland.

The agreement, signed under former President Muse Bihi Abdi, granted Ethiopia a 50-year lease on a stretch of Somaliland’s coastline on the Gulf of Aden in exchange for potential recognition of Somaliland’s independence — a move that triggered strong opposition from Somalia’s federal government in Mogadishu.

“President Irro is committed to securing Somaliland’s full international recognition — nothing less than that,” an aide to the president, who requested anonymity, told our reporter. “He wants clarity and direct engagement with the Ethiopian leadership before moving forward.”

The MoU, which remains pending implementation, has been a central focus of Irro’s early diplomatic efforts since taking office.

Last month, during a visit to neighbouring Djibouti, Irro held discussions with Ethiopian diplomats led by Kebede Abera Ido, Ethiopia’s Deputy Ambassador to Djibouti.

Their talks covered regional security, Red Sea maritime access, trade corridors, and investment opportunities.

“The President discussed with the Ambassadors the development of the region’s economy, investment opportunities, trade facilitation, infrastructure, and increased humanitarian aid,” said Hussein Aden Ige, spokesperson for the Somaliland presidency, in a May statement.

Deputy Ambassador Kebede confirmed Ethiopia’s interest in deepening cooperation with Somaliland, particularly in areas of trade and security.

Ethiopia, a landlocked nation, has long sought alternative routes for sea access to enhance its import and export capabilities.

In a sign of intensifying international outreach, President Irro also met with foreign diplomats in Nairobi last week, where he reiterated Somaliland’s longstanding call for international recognition.

“We have not come to Nairobi today with a begging bowl,” Irro told the gathering. “We are not looking for handouts. We are here to build genuine partnerships with governments, investors, and institutions that understand the value of mutual benefit.”

Among many Somalilanders, hopes remain high that Ethiopia’s engagement could be a breakthrough toward international recognition, a goal that has eluded the self-declared republic since its separation from Somalia in 1991.

Irro’s administration appears determined to capitalise on this momentum, even amid diplomatic tensions with Mogadishu.

]]> MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed made a brief visit to Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, on Thursday, spending less than three hours in the city amid escalating security incidents in the Horn of Africa nation.

The visit marked the culmination of a year of heightened tensions and diplomatic friction between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa, triggered by Ethiopia’s controversial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Somaliland.

The 1 January 2024 deal, which grants Ethiopia sea access and a military base in the breakaway region, was strongly opposed by the Somali government, which considers Somaliland an integral part of Somalia.

Shortly after the Ethiopian Airlines plane carrying Prime Minister Abiy landed at Aden Adde International Airport on Thursday mid day, suspected militants launched a mortar attack on the airport compound.

Abiy was escorted to Lido Beach in what was described as a symbolic gesture of improving relations with Mogadishu following last year’s tensions over Ethiopia’s attempts to secure sea access.

No casualties were reported, but residents in a nearby neighborhood stated that at least one person was injured when a shell fell short of the airport, striking an open area near residential homes.

Meanwhile, early on Thursday, Al-Shabaab militants seized Balcad, a town only 30 km north of Mogadishu despite they retreated later.

Lido Beach visit: the symbolic gesture of improving relations

Abiy was escorted to Lido Beach in what was described as a symbolic gesture of improving relations with Mogadishu following last year’s tensions over Ethiopia’s attempts to secure sea access.

Abiy was then swiftly transported to Villa Somalia, where he held bilateral talks with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and members of the Somali cabinet.

“The meeting between the President and the Prime Minister focused on strengthening cooperation in the areas of security, economy, and social affairs. They emphasized the historical ties and longstanding neighborly relations between the two nations, which are founded on mutual respect for sovereignty and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs,” read a statement from Villa Somalia.

Abiy’s visit followed a series of diplomatic engagements, including a December 2024 meeting between President Mohamud and Ethiopian officials in Turkey, aimed at easing tensions between the two nations.

During Abiy’s visit, Mogadishu was placed under a strict lockdown, with thousands of security personnel blocking roads and restricting movement for civilians, including vehicles and pedestrians.

At Lido Beach, a protest erupted as young men and women denounced Ethiopia’s aspirations for Somali maritime access. Somali security forces quickly dispersed the demonstration, reportedly opening fire and fatally shooting a young boy.

The incident further fueled public anger, with citizens taking to social media to condemn the killing and demand accountability.

The Somali presidency has yet to issue a statement on the shooting.

Following his visit, Abiy expressed his appreciation for the reception by President Mohamud, stating on X (formerly Twitter): “We held extensive discussions on a range of areas, including peace and security, economy, diplomacy, and the potential to build joint infrastructure.”

He added: “The Horn of Africa is rich in resources—fertile lands, fresh water, and human capital. Yet, as a region, we struggle to feed ourselves. This makes integration essential to achieving our shared aspirations. We have immense potential as a region that must be harnessed to achieve our collective greatness. We cannot grow in isolation, but together, we can thrive. Regional thinking and collaboration are essential, and we are ready to work with Somalia to make this a reality.”

Despite the diplomatic engagements, tensions remain high, with many Somalis continuing to voice opposition to Ethiopia’s ambitions in the region.

]]> MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – The militant group Al-Shabaab launched a daring attack on Balcad, a town just 30 kilometers north of Mogadishu, on Thursday.

The group stormed a Somali military base, forcing government forces and local militias to retreat before briefly taking control of the town.

The Somali government has since claimed it recaptured Balcad, stating that its forces repelled the attack and inflicted heavy losses on the militants.

However, Al-Shabaab asserts that it killed 23 government soldiers and seized military vehicles left behind by retreating troops.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing Al-Shabaab fighters patrolling the streets of Balcad, waving their black banners, while groups of young men followed them.

Fearing reprisals, many residents fled the town.

Al-Shabaab’s ongoing resurgence

The attack is part of Al-Shabaab’s ongoing resurgence in the Middle Shabelle and Hiiraan regions, where the group has escalated its operations in recent weeks.

“The militants attacked Balcad, took over some parts, and later withdrew. Unfortunately, they remain dangerously close—just three kilometers away. The problem is that there has never been a serious effort to eliminate them,” MP Hassan Muudey said, expressing concern over the group’s growing influence.

The timing of the attack appeared strategic, coinciding with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali’s visit to Mogadishu.

Al-Shabaab has recently intensified its offensives, capturing several rural towns in Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle.

Last week, the group launched a surprise attack on the Aboorey area in Hiiraan, where Macawisley militia fighters from the Hawadle clan were stationed.

In addition, Al-Shabaab militants have seized several areas in Middle Shabelle, including El Ahmed and Al-Kowthar, forcing civilians to flee. Many of these towns were previously controlled by Somali forces and local clan militias. However, internal clan disputes have weakened their unity, leading to divisions within the army.

]]> ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (Kaab TV) – Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud have announced a renewed commitment to restore and enhance bilateral relations, marking the end of nearly a year-long deadlock between the two neighboring nations.

The agreement was revealed during President Hassan Sheikh’s working visit to Ethiopia on Saturday, January 11, 2025.

This significant development comes just weeks after the two leaders signed a Turkey-brokered agreement on December 11, 2024, which resolved tensions surrounding Ethiopia’s controversial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Somaliland.

The MoU had proposed granting Ethiopia access to the Red Sea and establishing a military base, a move Somalia opposed, citing violations of its territorial integrity.

According to a one-page statement issued by the Ethiopian Prime Minister’s Office, the leaders agreed to fully restore diplomatic representation in their respective capitals, with ambassadors resuming posts in Mogadishu and Addis Ababa.

They also pledged closer cooperation in regional and multilateral forums to address shared challenges.

“The leaders reaffirmed that the stability of the region requires strong cooperation between the two countries based on mutual trust, confidence, and respect. They agreed to work together to further coordinate efforts to improve regional relations, fostering common understanding and shared progress,” the statement said.

Security and Economic Cooperation in Focus

Both leaders emphasized the importance of robust security collaboration to combat extremist militant groups threatening regional stability.

Somalia recently agreed to include Ethiopian forces in the newly-formed African Union peacekeeping mission, known as AUSSOM, which replaces ATMIS.

Economic cooperation was also a key focus, with agreements to expand infrastructure linkages aimed at boosting trade and investment.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the Ankara Declaration, vowing to expedite technical negotiations to foster stronger partnerships.

Turkey’s role in facilitating the Ankara Declaration was highlighted, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expected to visit Ethiopia and Somalia next month in a landmark trip to strengthen ties.

Turkey has deep connections with both nations, maintaining a large embassy and a military base in Mogadishu, and recently signing undisclosed military and oil agreements with Somalia.

Turkey is also one of Ethiopia’s largest foreign investors, with investments exceeding $2.5 billion across sectors like textiles, construction, and manufacturing.

Over 200 Turkish companies operate in Ethiopia, employing tens of thousands of locals.

Mixed Reactions in Somalia

While the joint communiqué was praised by Ethiopian officials and Somali diplomats as a milestone, it faced backlash in Mogadishu.

Some Somali Members of Parliament (MPs) criticized the agreement, calling President Hassan Sheikh a “traitor” and demanding his impeachment.

“The president did not inform Parliament about his trip to Addis Ababa. He failed to seek parliamentary approval to restore ties with Ethiopia, despite a January 2024 parliamentary resolution declaring Ethiopia an enemy state,” said MP Abdirahman Abdishakur, referring to a bill passed by Somalia’s Federal Parliament that banned diplomatic relations with Ethiopia.

Despite internal criticism, this agreement is seen as a step towards fostering peace, stability, and development in the Horn of Africa.

]]> ADDIS ABABA (KAAB TV) – In a momentous announcement, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed declared that the Ethiopian government is leaving no stone unturned in its pursuit of a crucial port for the country.

The Prime Minister revealed that all options, including negotiation, “give and take,” and even the use of force, are on the table to attain this strategic objective.

Addressing a gathering of investors and businessmen on Thursday, Abiy emphasized the pressing need for Ethiopia to possess its own port, citing the exorbitant and unsustainable costs associated with relying on neighboring countries’ ports.

The move towards independent port access aims to reduce Ethiopia’s dependence on external trade gateways.

To materialize this vision, the Ethiopian government has already initiated negotiations with key regional players, namely Eritrea, Djibouti, and Somaliland, in the hope of securing a pathway to a port.

An extraordinary proposal has been tabled to Eritrea, offering a remarkable 30% stake in the renowned Ethiopian Airlines as a bargaining chip for coveted port access.

While peace remains the preferred path, Prime Minister Abiy asserted that employing force would be considered a measure of last resort: “We want to get a port through peaceful means, but if that fails, we will use force,” he stated unequivocally.

This groundbreaking announcement comes at a time when Ethiopia is under escalating pressure from the international community to resolve its longstanding border dispute with Eritrea.

The two nations engaged in a fierce conflict from 1998 to 2000, leaving the border sealed and contentious issues unresolved.

The Prime Minister’s determination to secure a port is being interpreted as a resolute commitment by the Ethiopian government to tackle this complex challenge head-on, even if it entails confronting potential conflicts and risks.

The landlocked Ethiopia is rapidly growing nation with a staggering population exceeding 120 million. The country has witnessed remarkable economic progress. Nonetheless, the lack of a direct port connection has emerged as a formidable barrier to its further economic development.

At present, Ethiopia heavily relies on the ports of Djibouti and Somaliland for the import and export of goods. However, these ports come with a hefty price tag and are often plagued by congestion issues, compromising Ethiopia’s economic efficiency.

As the nation braces itself for a decisive push towards securing its own port, the world watches closely, recognizing the gravity of this endeavor and its implications for Ethiopia’s future economic landscape.

The age-old border dispute with Eritrea continues to pose hurdles, complicating the path to a definitive agreement.

]]> Addis Ababa (Kaab TV) – The Head of the Ethiopian ruling Prosperity Party’s Amhara region branch, Girma Yeshitila has been shot dead in Amhara region, the local media reported.

The specifics of the killing are yet to emerge however, Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed tweeted that the party official was killed by “violent extremists who believe that he [Girma] shouldn’t have a different idea from ours”.

The PM also stated that he was killed where he was born and grew up.

Girma, who had been the head of the office of the Amhara Prosperity Party until his death, served as an executive member of the ruling party.

Girma was at the center of the government’s controversial decision to abolish the regional special forces and “reorganize” them into national army, federal and regular police.

Mass protests erupted in the Amhara region in opposition to the decision to disband the regional forces.
