MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Swedish authorities have formally charged a 23-year-old man of Swedish–Syrian background with multiple terrorism-related offenses, including attempts to travel to Somalia to join the extremist group Islamic State (IS/Daesh), according to Swedish prosecutors.
The indictment outlines several serious accusations. Prosecutors allege that the man attempted on two separate occasions to reach Somalia with the intention of joining IS.
He is further accused of financing or attempting to finance the organization using cryptocurrency transactions, as well as of maintaining membership or active involvement in IS.
According to the prosecution, his first known attempt occurred on September 4, 2023, when he tried to travel toward Somalia. A second attempt took place on March 18, 2024, this time routing through Saudi Arabia.
“On both occasions he was stopped before reaching his destination,” prosecutor Carl Mellberg told AFP. “During the first attempt, he was arrested by Ethiopian authorities near the Somali border.
During the second attempt, he was detained by Somali authorities.”
Although investigators could not conclusively determine his exact intended role within the organization, Mellberg said the evidence clearly indicates his intent to join IS.
“Since he never reached Somalia, we cannot say with certainty what specific duties he expected to take on,” Mellberg explained. “But what is beyond doubt is that his goal was active participation within IS — nothing less than becoming a member.”
Prosecutors also stated that the man had received detailed instructions on the manufacturing and use of explosives.
These materials, according to the indictment, were designed specifically for use in terrorist acts.
The accused resides in southern Sweden and is reportedly acquainted with another young man — a 22-year-old — who was convicted in early February on terrorism-related charges, including planning foreign travel for terrorist purposes. Authorities say some of their activities were coordinated.
The 23-year-old’s trial is scheduled to begin on December 3, and proceedings are expected to last three days at the Attunda District Court.
