Johannesburg (Kaab TV) – South Africa has strongly condemned Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland, Somalia’s breakaway region, as an independent state, calling it a “direct threat” to peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
In a statement, South Africa’s Foreign Ministry emphasized that Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected, warning that unilateral recognitions risk escalating tensions in an already fragile region. “Israel’s action legitimizes fragmentation and risks triggering a domino effect of instability,” the ministry said.
The ministry distinguished between decolonization and secession, noting: “The former restores sovereignty; the latter dismantles it.” South Africa reaffirmed its support for African Union principles, including uti possidetis, which upholds existing borders inherited at independence to prevent conflict.
The country urged the international community to reject what it described as Tel Aviv’s “external interference” and to support a united, stable Somalia.
Israel’s recognition makes it the first country in the world to formally acknowledge Somaliland as a sovereign state, drawing condemnation from Türkiye, a close ally of Somalia, as well as from several African and Middle Eastern nations.
The international backlash is growing, with many countries denouncing the move as a violation of international law and a threat to regional stability.
Since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991, Somaliland has operated as a de facto independent region, managing its own administration, politics, and security, but it has not achieved formal international recognition.
Mogadishu continues to refuse recognition of Somaliland’s independence, considers it an integral part of Somalia, and views any direct engagement with the region as a violation of the country’s sovereignty and unity.
The move has fueled global concern over actions that could destabilize the Horn of Africa and undermine regional security.
