Somaliland Pursues Peaceful Resolution to Clan Fighting in Its Western Regions

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – The Speaker of Somaliland’s House of Elders (Guurti), Saleebaan Maxamuud Aadan, on Thursday dispatched ten members of the council to the Awdal and Salal regions, where intermittent clan fighting has erupted over a land dispute.

The conflict reportedly stemmed from disagreements surrounding the Xeer Ciise customary law document, which one of the rival clans in the Salal region opposed being presented in the coastal town of Saylac.

The disagreement later escalated into a broader land dispute between communities in the two regions, posing a serious threat to public security and the free movement of civilians.

“Two communities killing each other is not a simple matter. I pray that you succeed in establishing lasting peace between them. You will not fail, but be prepared for initial challenges. There has never been a Somali community that rejected the intervention of elders,” Speaker Saleebaan said.

Meanwhile, a large delegation led by the Minister of Interior and Security, Cabdalle Maxamed Carab, has traveled to the Awdal and Salal regions, where they are holding meetings with elders from the rival clans involved in the conflict.

The delegation also includes the Minister of Defense, the Minister of Water Resources, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of the Constitution, the Commander of the National Army, the Second Deputy Commander of the Police Force, and other senior officials.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior, the delegation will hold a series of consultations with various segments of the local communities during their stay in the regions.

Separately, the Eastern Burco community last night issued a call urging the warring clans to lay down their arms and engage in dialogue. The community also pledged to play a significant role in efforts to restore peace in the affected regions.
