Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – The Federal Republic of Somalia has reaffirmed its support for the Syrian Arab Republic, emphasizing solidarity and cooperation between the two nations amidst ongoing regional and international challenges.
The statement was made during a high-level diplomatic meeting held in Mogadishu this week, marking a notable moment in the deepening of ties between the two countries.
In a joint press conference following bilateral talks, Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abshir Omar Jama, reiterated the Somali government’s recognition of Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
“Somalia stands firmly with the Syrian people and their right to determine their future without foreign interference,” he stated. “Our historical relationship with Syria, rooted in Arab solidarity and shared cultural values, remains strong and unwavering.”
Syria’s delegation, led by Deputy Foreign Minister Bashar al-Jaafari, thanked Somalia for its continued support and stressed the importance of building alliances among Arab League members.
“Somalia’s principled stance sends a clear message of brotherhood and regional unity at a time when international pressures continue to affect the stability of many nations in the region,” al-Jaafari said.
The diplomatic exchange included discussions on enhancing cooperation in education, trade, counterterrorism, and humanitarian aid.
Both countries face the long-term effects of internal conflict and have expressed mutual interest in supporting post-war reconstruction efforts through knowledge-sharing and multilateral partnerships.
This reaffirmation comes amid broader shifts in Middle Eastern diplomacy, where several countries have begun restoring or normalizing relations with Syria following more than a decade of war and international isolation.
Somalia’s gesture signals its alignment with a growing bloc of nations seeking re-engagement with Damascus under the framework of Arab unity and mutual development.
Analysts view the move as largely symbolic but diplomatically significant, reflecting Somalia’s evolving foreign policy and a renewed effort to strengthen its role in the Arab and African spheres.
No immediate policy changes were announced, but officials from both sides confirmed that further bilateral meetings are planned for later this year to explore concrete avenues for cooperation.
