Somalia Media: Escalating Attacks, Repression, and Arrests Undermine Freedom of Speech

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Today, May 3, countries around the world are celebrating World Press Freedom Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the vital role of journalists and affirming their right to operate freely, with support from all stakeholders to ensure the smooth functioning of media activities and the overall safety of media workers.

May 3 is internationally recognized as World Press Freedom Day, in line with the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, particularly Article 19, adopted in 1948, which guarantees the right to freedom of expression.

The overall purpose of this commemoration is to raise awareness about the importance of press freedom and to remind governments of their responsibility to protect and respect journalists.

In recognition of the role governments play in ensuring journalists’ safety, an annual conference is organized by UNESCO, where key issues related to press freedom are discussed, including good governance, accountability, and the role of media in supporting countries recovering from conflict.

Over the past two decades, global media has experienced significant growth, driven by advancements in technology used in journalism. These developments have also intensified competition within the media industry.

Somalia is among the countries marking World Press Freedom Day today. In principle, this day represents the collective right to express opinions and share information through both print and electronic media platforms.

This occasion also serves as an opportunity to reflect on the progress made by journalists and the tangible achievements they have contributed in serving the public through their profession.

The media acts as a mirror of a nation’s development. In recent years, Somali media operating within the country has played a meaningful role in early efforts toward peacebuilding, state reconstruction, and restoring hope among the population.

Maintaining neutrality is essential to safeguarding press freedom. Journalists have a duty to present information truthfully and objectively to prevent conflict and avoid undermining the credibility of the media.

It is important to recognize that media can be used in two ways: it can either harm or build society. Therefore, it should not become a tool for those who seek to spread division or advance narrow personal or foreign interests.

Journalists are encouraged to support efforts aimed at building a responsible government that restores security and dignity to the people and the nation, while avoiding involvement in political disputes between leaders or other competing factions.

To achieve full press freedom, it is crucial for the government and media organizations to invest in training and capacity-building programs for media professionals.

However, in Somalia, there are ongoing concerns about the suppression of both the media and ordinary citizens.
