Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisalam Ali, received Sudan’s Ambassador to Somalia, Abdurrahman Khalil Ahmed Afandi, at the Foreign Ministry headquarters in Mogadishu on Sunday.
The meeting focused on recent regional developments and the two countries’ bilateral relations, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening cooperation.
The discussions come as the Horn of Africa and the wider Red Sea region continue to face political, security and humanitarian challenges that have increased the importance of coordination among regional states.
Somalia and Sudan maintain longstanding diplomatic ties and have cooperated in areas including political affairs, education, security and regional diplomacy.
Sudan has also historically played a role in supporting Somalia’s state-building efforts, while Somalia has expressed solidarity with the Sudanese people during the country’s prolonged political and security crisis.
The meeting in Mogadishu also comes as Sudan continues to face a devastating conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has displaced millions of people and created one of the region’s most serious humanitarian crises.
The conflict has also generated wider concerns over regional stability, particularly given Sudan’s strategic position along the Red Sea and its borders with several Horn of Africa countries.
For Somalia, developments in Sudan are particularly significant because of the broader security and political connections between the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
Mogadishu has increasingly emphasized regional cooperation and diplomatic engagement as it seeks to strengthen its position within regional organizations and address common security and economic challenges.
Although no major new agreement was announced following Sunday’s meeting, the two officials reaffirmed their intention to maintain bilateral cooperation and continue consultations on issues of mutual interest.
The meeting also reflects Somalia’s continued diplomatic engagement with regional governments at a time when developments in the Red Sea, Sudan and the wider Horn of Africa are increasingly interconnected.
Both countries are expected to maintain diplomatic contacts as they seek to advance their shared interests and respond to emerging regional challenges.
