Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, was received by Jordan’s King Abdullah II in Amman alongside Arab foreign ministers participating in a ministerial meeting focused on developments in Jerusalem.
The gathering brought together members of the Arab Ministerial Committee tasked with coordinating diplomatic efforts to address Israeli policies and measures affecting occupied Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian holy sites.
The meeting comes amid renewed regional concern over the status of Jerusalem and increasing tensions surrounding access to and the administration of its holy sites.
The committee’s broader mandate is to coordinate Arab diplomatic positions, mobilize international support and defend the city’s legal and historical status, including the existing arrangements governing Al-Aqsa Mosque and other religious sites.
Jordan plays a central role in these efforts because of its Hashemite custodianship of Jerusalem’s Islamic and Christian holy places.
For Somalia, participation in the ministerial gathering reflects Mogadishu’s continued engagement with Arab and Muslim countries on the Palestinian issue and its support for international efforts concerning Jerusalem.
Somalia has also recently reiterated its position on the Palestinian question and opposed unilateral actions it considers harmful to the legal status of Jerusalem.
In July, Somalia’s Foreign Minister discussed regional issues with his Egyptian counterpart, including Egypt’s rejection of Somaliland’s reported move to establish a diplomatic mission in Jerusalem.
The Amman meeting therefore provided an opportunity for Somalia to join broader Arab diplomatic efforts on Jerusalem while strengthening coordination with Jordan and other participating states.
The discussions are part of wider regional attempts to preserve the city’s historical and legal status and to maintain international attention on developments affecting Palestinians and the holy sites.
