Somalia’s national football team, the Ocean Stars, suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Gambia in their opening match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers on September 25, 2026, at Independence Stadium in Banjul.
The match marked Somalia’s debut in the group stage of AFCON qualifying after successfully advancing from the preliminary round. CAF has placed Somalia in Group C alongside Gambia, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire.
Despite a spirited performance, particularly in the second half, Somalia was denied a valuable point when Mohammed Badamosi scored the winning goal for Gambia in the 83rd minute.
Gambia took the lead in the 18th minute after Ebrima Colley converted a penalty, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage. Somalia attempted to respond but went into halftime trailing by a single goal.
The Ocean Stars emerged with greater intensity after the break and were rewarded in the 72nd minute when Bilal Njie found the net to level the score at 1-1. The equalizer raised hopes that Somalia could secure at least a point from the encounter and possibly challenge for all three.
However, as the match appeared headed for a draw, Badamosi struck late to restore Gambia’s lead. Somalia pushed forward in search of another equalizer, but the remaining minutes were not enough to change the outcome.
The victory earned Gambia its first three points of the qualifying campaign, while Somalia began its Group C journey without a point.
Although disappointed by the result, Somalia showed encouraging signs against a more experienced opponent. The team’s ability to recover from a deficit and compete throughout the second half highlighted the progress made by the Ocean Stars in recent years.
Group C is considered one of the more challenging groups in the qualifiers, featuring African heavyweights Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana alongside Gambia.
In the other opening Group C fixture, Côte d’Ivoire defeated Ghana 2-0, setting up a competitive battle for qualification.
Somalia will now turn its attention to a crucial second match against Côte d’Ivoire on September 29. The Ivory Coast side enters the fixture on the back of its victory over Ghana and is widely regarded as one of the strongest teams in the group.
With six matches to be played in the group stage and the top two teams advancing to AFCON 2027, Somalia still has ample opportunity to revive its qualification hopes. A positive result against Côte d’Ivoire could provide a major boost to the Ocean Stars’ campaign.
Somalia’s presence at this stage of the competition is already a significant milestone. The Ocean Stars reached the group phase after eliminating Mauritius on penalties in the preliminary round, earning the chance to compete against some of Africa’s top national teams.
While the defeat in Banjul was not the result Somali supporters hoped for, the performance demonstrated the team’s growing competitiveness. The late winner also served as a reminder of the fine margins that often decide matches at this level.
Attention now shifts to September 29, when Somalia faces Côte d’Ivoire in another major test of its AFCON 2027 ambitions. The outcome could play a key role in shaping the Ocean Stars’ chances of progressing from Group C.
