Somalia Does Not Appear In The List of Countries That Owe Contributions To The United Nations

|

MOGADISHU (KAAB TV) – The United Nations has issued a list of member countries that owe unpaid debts to the extent that the country can lose its vote in the General Assembly, according to Article 19 of the United Nations Charter.

According to a letter sent by Secretary-General António Guterres to the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations on February 17, 2025, nine countries are currently in debt to the extent that they will lose their votes, if the contributions owed are not paid.

These countries include: Afghanistan, Bolivia, Cape Verde, Congo, Ecuador, Grenada, Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe, and Venezuela. The United Nations also confirmed that Sao Tome and Principe was allowed to continue voting until the end of the 79th session.

Somalia does not appear on this list, indicating that it is not among the countries whose debts have reached the level of losing their votes. This means that Somalia is in compliance with its economic obligations to the United Nations or it is not at the level of losing the vote.

In 2022, Somalia was third on the list of 11 countries that owed UN membership dues, with an amount of $1,446,163.

This issue coincided with Somalia’s first non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council in 50 years.

It is worth noting that the United Nations may allow some countries to retain their vote if it is proved that the reason for not paying the debts is beyond their financial capacity.
