Somalia Cabinet to Hold Emergency Meeting on Security Crisis

|

Somalia’s Federal Cabinet has been summoned to an extraordinary meeting to discuss the country’s deteriorating security situation, particularly recent clashes between government forces and al-Shabaab militants in parts of Lower Shabelle and Bay regions.

Independent reports indicate that al-Shabaab used explosive-laden drones in an attack late yesterday in Aw-Yasiin, approximately three kilometres from Leego.

The assault reportedly targeted federal forces travelling towards Buurhakaba district in Bay region, which recently came under the control of forces loyal to the former president of South West State.

Security sources told independent media that the fighting, described as an ambush, damaged military vehicles and supply trucks and caused casualties among government forces. The exact number of those killed or wounded has not been confirmed publicly.

The reported casualties prompted heightened readiness at the Somali National Army’s military hospital in Mogadishu, where medical personnel were placed on alert overnight in anticipation of wounded soldiers arriving from the front lines.

The emergency Cabinet meeting is expected to examine the latest developments, assess the responsibilities of relevant security institutions and discuss military measures aimed at countering al-Shabaab.

Ministers are also expected to consider and approve the government’s budget.

The security developments come amid continued military operations and shifting territorial control in parts of southwestern Somalia, where the federal government and forces aligned with the former South West State leadership have been involved in a broader political and security dispute.
