LOWER SHABELLE (Kaab TV) – Somalia’s elite Danab Special Forces have killed 14 Al-Shabaab militants during a planned military operation in Kurtunwaarey district of the Lower Shabelle region, according to the Federal Government’s Ministry of Defense.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the ministry said the operation targeted sites used by Al-Shabaab commanders and fighters to coordinate attacks and support the group’s activities in the region.
The ministry reported that government forces successfully carried out the raid, killing 14 members of the militant group and destroying weapons stockpiles, military equipment, and logistical supplies allegedly used in the planning and execution of attacks against civilians and security forces.
Officials described the operation as part of a broader campaign aimed at dismantling Al-Shabaab’s operational network and disrupting its ability to launch attacks in southern Somalia.
Kurtunwaarey district, located in Lower Shabelle, has long been considered a strategic area in the conflict against Al-Shabaab due to its proximity to key transport routes and agricultural communities. The district and surrounding areas have witnessed repeated military operations by Somali government forces and allied units seeking to weaken the group’s influence.
The Ministry of Defense said the operation reflects ongoing efforts by the Somali National Army and its special forces to eliminate Al-Shabaab strongholds and restore government authority in areas previously affected by insurgent activity.
Over the past several months, Somali forces, supported by local community fighters and international partners, have intensified offensives against Al-Shabaab across parts of Lower Shabelle, Middle Shabelle, Hiiraan, Galgaduud, and other regions. The campaign has resulted in the recapture of several towns and villages, although the group continues to carry out bombings, ambushes, and targeted attacks.
Al-Shabaab, which is affiliated with al-Qaeda, has waged an insurgency against the Somali government for more than a decade and remains one of the country’s most significant security challenges.
The Ministry of Defense reiterated that military operations against the group will continue as part of the government’s strategy to improve security, protect civilians, and advance efforts to stabilize the country.
Authorities did not report any casualties among government forces during the operation.
