Nairobi (KAAB TV) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, arrived in Nairobi today to attend the state funeral of Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Raila Amolo Odinga, a towering figure in Kenyan politics whose death has sent shockwaves across the East African region and beyond.
The funeral ceremony was held at Nyayo National Stadium, drawing tens of thousands of mourners, including several regional heads of state, diplomats, dignitaries, and international leaders, who came together to pay their final respects to the veteran opposition leader, democracy advocate, and former Prime Minister.
President Hassan Sheikh joined other high-profile figures in honoring Odinga’s legacy. In a statement delivered during the ceremony, the Somali President emphasized the importance of regional unity and the historical ties between Somalia and Kenya.
“Raila Odinga was a courageous statesman who fought relentlessly for democracy, justice, and the voice of the people—not only in Kenya but across Africa. His death is not only a loss to the Kenyan people but to the entire region,” said President Hassan Sheikh.
He also extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the people and government of Somalia to the Odinga family, the Kenyan government, and the citizens of Kenya, describing Odinga as a symbol of resilience and a political figure whose influence transcended borders.
Raila Odinga, aged 80, passed away earlier this month after a brief illness. Widely considered one of Kenya’s most influential political figures, Odinga served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 following a power-sharing agreement that ended post-election violence.
Throughout his career, he remained a prominent figure in opposition politics, advocating for electoral reforms, devolution, and social justice.
The streets of Nairobi and other major cities were filled with tens of thousands of supporters who turned out in solidarity. While most gatherings remained peaceful, isolated incidents of unrest and clashes with police were reported in a few areas, particularly in neighborhoods considered to be Odinga strongholds.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely to ensure continued public safety.
President Hassan Sheikh’s presence at the funeral underscores the ongoing diplomatic relations between Somalia and Kenya, two neighboring nations with shared interests in regional security, trade, and political cooperation.
As Kenya bids farewell to one of its most enduring political leaders, messages of condolence and solidarity continue to pour in from across Africa and the international community.
