NEW YORK (KAAB TV) – President Mohamud’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York highlights Somalia’s progress and security efforts.
In his wide-ranging speech, President Mohamud focused on several key issues, including the state of national security, the ongoing fight against the terrorist group Al-Shabaab (AS), constitutional reforms, and democratic development in Somalia. He also reiterated Somalia’s firm stance in support of the Palestinian people amid ongoing humanitarian crises.
Security and the Fight Against Al-Shabaab
President Mohamud highlighted the significant strides Somalia has made in improving security, particularly in the campaign against Al-Shabaab. He stated that since his return to office in 2022, his administration has made security a top priority, noting clear progress on the ground.
He emphasized that Somali National Army (SNA) forces, in collaboration with international partners, have regained control over strategic territories formerly held by the militant group.
“We are continuing our relentless efforts to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s network across the country,” the President stated. “But we cannot do this alone. We call upon our international partners to redouble their support and stand with the Somali people in this historic mission to eliminate terror from our homeland.”
Democratization and Constitutional Reform
Turning to governance, President Mohamud reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparent and democratic processes, stating that Somalia is on the path toward a more inclusive and accountable political system.
He emphasized the importance of transitioning away from indirect elections, which have long characterized Somali politics, towards a universal suffrage model — where citizens can directly vote for their leaders.
“After 57 years, Somalia is now preparing to hold elections based on one-person-one-vote. This is a milestone we are determined to reach, with the support of our people and our friends in the international community,” he said.
The President called on UN member states and global partners to support Somalia in achieving this goal, which he described as essential for long-term peace and stability.
Solidarity with Palestine
In the concluding part of his speech, President Mohamud expressed strong solidarity with the Palestinian people, calling attention to their ongoing suffering and human rights violations.
“Somalia stands firmly with our Palestinian brothers and sisters during these difficult times,” he stated. “We call on the international community to ensure that the rights of the Palestinian people are upheld and that a just and lasting solution is found.”
His remarks were met with support from several fellow member states, many of whom continue to express concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s address underscored Somalia’s progress in reclaiming security, building democratic institutions, and playing a constructive role on global issues. His message to the UN General Assembly was clear: Somalia is moving forward — and with sustained international support, it can achieve its vision of a peaceful, democratic, and sovereign nation.
