MOGADISHU (KAAB TV) – Somali Police have successfully intercepted a large shipment of illicit narcotics that had been smuggled into the country through the main port of Mogadishu.
The seizure was presented to the media earlier today during a press conference held at the port, where security officials detailed the operation that led to the discovery.
The narcotics, which were hidden inside a shipping container, were reportedly intended for distribution within Mogadishu and other regions across Somalia.
The shipment was intercepted thanks to a coordinated intelligence-led operation by the Somali Police Force, in collaboration with port security and other law enforcement branches.
Speaking to reporters, Somali Police Spokesperson Abdifatah Aden Hassan confirmed that the drugs were concealed inside packages labeled as medical supplies—specifically, paracetamol.
However, upon inspection, authorities discovered large quantities of illegal pills that are strictly prohibited under Somali law.
“This substance may be labeled as medicine, but in reality, it is a poison,” said Spokesman Abdifatah. “These drugs, although used in small doses medically, are being misused in Mogadishu as narcotics. The smugglers tried to disguise them as legitimate pharmaceuticals to bypass security, but thanks to the vigilance of our officers and port authorities, the shipment was intercepted before it could reach the market.”
He emphasized that the drug posed a serious threat to public health and national security, particularly among Somali youth, who are often the target of such illegal trade.
The spokesman also confirmed that several individuals connected to the smuggling operation have been arrested and are currently in custody.
Investigations are ongoing, and additional suspects, including those linked to the shipment’s documentation and port clearance process, are being pursued.
“The suspects involved in this case will soon be brought before the courts to face justice. We are actively tracing all individuals and networks involved in this criminal act, including those associated with the fraudulent documentation used to facilitate the container’s entry,” he added.
Authorities believe that this latest seizure is part of a wider effort by criminal networks to exploit Somalia’s ports for narcotics trafficking.
The police have vowed to strengthen inspection protocols and increase collaboration between customs, port officials, and security services.
Today’s seizure marks the second major drug bust in Mogadishu’s main port in just two months, highlighting the persistent threat posed by drug smuggling operations and the ongoing efforts by Somali authorities to combat them.
Spokesman Abdifatah concluded by thanking the port authorities, customs officials, and security personnel who played a key role in uncovering and intercepting the shipment.
He called for continued vigilance and public cooperation in reporting suspicious activity that could endanger Somali communities.
