Somali journalist Mohamed Aweys Muudey has been killed in the German city of Darmstadt, an incident that has sparked grief and concern among Somalis and members of the media community.
According to German reports, Muudey was stabbed while at a residential facility in Darmstadt. He sustained serious injuries and later died as a result of the attack.
The police report said “a dispute between two men ended fatally for a 68-year-old man on Friday evening (September 18, 2026) at a communal accommodation facility on Otto-Röhm-Straße. According to initial investigations, the 68-year-old was visiting a 28-year-old resident of the facility.”
It added “For reasons still unknown, the two men became embroiled in a heated argument around 6:40 p.m. During the altercation, the 28-year-old allegedly seriously injured the 68-year-old with a knife. The injured man was able to leave the apartment. However, he succumbed to his injuries outside after unsuccessful resuscitation attempts. “
German authorities have identified the suspect as a 28-year-old Somali man.
Police and prosecutors are continuing their investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the killing, the motive behind the attack, and the nature of the relationship between the two men.
Mohamed Aweys Muudey was a well-known figure in Somali journalism and spent many years working in the media industry. He was recognized for his contribution to informing Somali audiences and covering issues affecting Somali communities.
His name also gained international attention in 2014 when he was arrested in Ethiopia and later sentenced to 27 years in prison under the country’s anti-terrorism laws.
