The Federal Government of Somalia has announced the killing of Abdullahi Hashi Labajir, also known as Ikhlaas, whom it described as one of Al-Shabaab’s most senior leaders, in a targeted airstrike conducted in the militant group’s stronghold of Jilib in the Middle Juba region.
According to a statement issued by the government, the operation took place on August 23, 2026, and was carried out through cooperation between Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) and international partners supporting the country’s counterterrorism campaign.
Authorities said the strike successfully targeted Labajir, but did not disclose the precise role he held within Al-Shabaab or provide details on whether other militants were killed or wounded during the operation.
The Somali government characterized the operation as a significant achievement in its ongoing efforts to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s leadership network.
However, officials stopped short of providing further information about Labajir’s responsibilities inside the group, leaving unanswered questions about his influence and the potential impact of his death on the organization’s command structure.
The reported strike took place in Jilib, a town widely regarded as one of Al-Shabaab’s most important bases. Located in the Middle Juba region, Jilib has long served as a key administrative, operational, and logistical hub for the militant group.
Senior Al-Shabaab leaders are believed to have used the area for planning operations, training fighters, collecting revenues, and coordinating activities across southern and central Somalia.
Because of its strategic importance, Jilib has frequently been targeted by Somali and international counterterrorism operations over the years.
Despite sustained military pressure, the town remains one of the group’s strongest remaining centers of influence and has often been described by security analysts as the de facto heart of Al-Shabaab’s leadership structure.
The announcement comes as Somali security forces continue to intensify military operations against Al-Shabaab across several regions, including Lower Shabelle, Middle Shabelle, Hiraan, Galgaduud, and parts of Jubaland.
In recent months, the government has increasingly relied on intelligence-led operations and precision airstrikes to target senior commanders, bomb-making experts, and logistical networks associated with the group.
Somalia’s counterterrorism campaign has been supported by international partners who provide intelligence, surveillance, and operational assistance aimed at weakening Al-Shabaab’s ability to organize attacks.
The government has repeatedly argued that eliminating senior leaders is critical to disrupting the group’s command and control capabilities and reducing its operational effectiveness.
Al-Shabaab, which has waged an insurgency against the Somali state for more than a decade and a half, continues to carry out bombings, assassinations, and armed assaults despite facing mounting military pressure.
The group still controls or exerts influence over parts of rural southern and central Somalia, allowing it to generate revenue and recruit fighters.
The government has not yet released evidence to independently verify Labajir’s death, and Al-Shabaab has not publicly commented on the claim.
Nevertheless, if confirmed, the killing of a figure described as one of the group’s top leaders would represent another significant blow to Al-Shabaab’s senior leadership at a time when Somali authorities are seeking to accelerate efforts to degrade the organization’s operational capacity.
Officials say operations targeting Al-Shabaab leaders and strongholds will continue as part of a broader strategy to restore government authority across the country and reduce the threat posed by the militant group.
