Somali Future Council Yet to Decide on Participation in President Mohamud’s May 10 Meeting

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) — The Somali Future Council has voiced skepticism over a proposed consultation meeting called by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, stating it has not yet decided whether it will take part.

Speaking on behalf of the opposition group, former Member of Parliament Abdirahman Dheere said the council is still reviewing the invitation and has not reached a final decision.
“Hassan Sheikh Mohamud sent an invitation, and we are still considering how to respond. We believe he may not be acting in good faith and could have other intentions, but no final position has been made,” Dheere said.

He added that recent meetings held by the council are part of broader efforts to formulate an alternative electoral framework, which they intend to present to the Somali public.

Dheere noted that internal consultations remain ongoing and indicated that the council is expected in the coming days to announce both its proposed electoral model and its formal response to the president’s invitation.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud recently invited the Somali Future Council to attend a high-level meeting scheduled for May 10 in Mogadishu. According to the presidency, the initiative follows consultations with various sectors of society and will focus on key national priorities, including the country’s political future and the electoral process.

The proposed talks have received support from international partners. The United Nations, the United Kingdom, and the European Union have all welcomed the initiative and urged both the federal government and opposition groups to engage in dialogue and reach consensus.

These developments come amid rising political tensions ahead of the expiration of the president’s term on May 15, with no agreement yet reached on an electoral model or timeline.
