Somali Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama Addresses COP30 in Brazil, Calls for Global Action on Climate Change

Rio De Janeiro (KAAB TV) – The First Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Salah Ahmed Jama, participated in the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) held in Belém, Brazil.

The conference brought together world leaders, environmental experts, and policymakers to discuss urgent global strategies to combat climate change and promote sustainable development.

In his address to the plenary session, Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama emphasized the urgent need for collective global action to reduce the escalating impacts of climate change.

He highlighted that Somalia is among the countries most severely affected by climate-related challenges, including recurrent droughts, floods, and desertification, which have had devastating effects on livelihoods, food security, and national stability.

“Somalia’s experience reflects the human face of the climate crisis. Our people have endured repeated droughts that have destroyed crops, displaced families, and strained our fragile ecosystems,” he stated. “We must act now—not tomorrow—to mitigate these growing threats.”

The Deputy Prime Minister also underscored that Somalia’s vulnerability stems from decades of environmental degradation, compounded by the effects of global warming. He noted that the country’s frequent drought cycles have worsened air quality and disrupted the natural balance of the environment, contributing indirectly to the broader climate crisis.

During his speech, Mr. Salah presented Somalia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and Climate Adaptation Plan, which form key pillars of the National Transformation Plan (NTP 2025–2029). This comprehensive framework outlines Somalia’s commitment to:

Strengthening community resilience against droughts, floods, and extreme weather events.

Mobilizing international support and investment for sustainable infrastructure and renewable energy.

Advocating for fair mechanisms to assist countries facing irreversible climate impacts.

Promoting renewable energy sources to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and lower carbon emissions.

A statement from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister reiterated that Somalia’s climate agenda aligns with the principles of the Paris Agreement and seeks stronger cooperation with international partners to achieve sustainable and equitable climate goals.

In conclusion, Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama called upon the global community to stand in solidarity with vulnerable nations like Somalia, stressing that climate change is a shared global responsibility.

“No nation can face this crisis alone. Together, we must forge partnerships that protect our planet and secure a sustainable future for generations to come,” he urged.

The COP30 conference continues in Belém with high-level discussions focusing on climate financing, adaptation strategies, and the implementation of the Paris Agreement commitments.
